Very strong acceleration from a stop, although this is somewhat illusory -- the initial tip-in is purposely aggressive. Still, it ran 0-60 in just 6.7 seconds in our testing. Braking B The brake pedal has an inch of dead travel at the top before braking action starts in earnest. Brakes are fairly easy to modulate around town. 60-0 in 118 feet is good for an SUV this large, although fade sets in after one panic stop. Steering C Very little information about what's going on at the front tires makes its way through the steering, but it is well-weighted and appropriately geared. Simply put, it has steering that makes this brute easy to wield. Handling B This is a very large, heavy vehicle (6,009 lb), and you can feel the mass in every turn. Its cornering limits are low. However, there is shockingly little body roll or sloppiness thanks to its Body Motion Control system, a pricey option. Driveability B Despite its bulk, the QX80 is easy to drive. Lots of torque, and the 7-speed automatic shifts quickly and unobtrusively. Parking is made easier through the front-facing camera and side cameras that provide a birds-eye view. Towing B Its maximum towing rating of 8,500 lb and 1,645-lb payload capacity are tops in its segment by a small amount. Off-Road A The suspension hardware and low range transfer case are truly formidable. The QX80 has real off-road chops, though the trick optional suspension is strangely only available with 22-inch wheels, which are not off-road-friendly. B Comfort Plush and quiet are the overriding impressions of this truck. Second row passengers are treated as equals to those up front. Entry can be ungraceful. Seating Comfort B The seats are plush and wide like a recliner. They have only basic reach, rake and lumbar adjustments yet are very comfortable. They facilitate a knees-apart driving stance. Backseats are similarly wide and soft. Third row, less so. Ride Comfort B The ride is overall pretty absorbent and unflustered by most bumps and ridges. Feels incredibly heavy. Independent suspension (rather than a live rear axle) helps here. The chassis occasionally bounds over large impacts/depressions. Quietness A Very quiet in the cabin. Road noise is almost nonexistent. Very little wind noise. Engine noise is muted unless you give it a good dose of throttle. Some of the engine's vibration is transmitted through the steering at slow speeds. B Interior Its tall height gives it a commanding view of the road. Good space for this type of vehicle. Getting in and out can be cumbersome. Well laid-out center stack controls, but they should be bigger/chunkier for an SUV to faciliate use in the adverse conditions it is intended for. Ergonomics B Easy to find a natural driving position. Temperature control knobs a plus. Straightforward audio controls. Steering wheel has a "wood" inlay that gives it a strange tactile sensation. Ingress/Egress C The step board and grab handle tell you all you need to know. However, they are awkwardly placed relative to one another for taller passengers. Doors open wide in front or rear. Seats pose little hindrance. Third row access is awkward. Space/Room B Body-on-frame SUVs like the QX80 inherently have less space inside than a unibody-based one of equal footprint. That said, the QX80 offers more interior space than its rivals. The third row is certainly cramped, though. Visibility B This is a tall SUV, so, although it is awkward to climb into, its high seating position affords a great view of the road and traffic. Visibility is good but wide front roof pillars and large mirrors obstruct vision on tight turns. Cargo/Storage B Maximum cargo capacity is a generous 95.1 cubic feet. Both the front and middle rows get a large center console bin with flip-up lid and two average size cupholders.
