1995 Ford SVT 'Cobra R'Back in the heydays of the Ponycar era, Ford made a very limited quantity of performance versions of its Mustang to compete in various forms of automotive events. These performance versions, called "R" model Mustangs, were something special. They offered upgraded handling, braking, lighter weight, and, of course, engine power. Today, these Cobra R models are highly sought after and increasingly rarer collector cars. They are examples of the Mustang taken to its best performance, and as such, they command a high dollar in the collector car market. It was with great enthusiasm to many when Ford's Special Vehicle Team (SVT) revealed it would once again offer a new limited-run 1995 Cobra R. In addition to all the special performance upgrades the car would receive, the biggest news was the engine. For the first and last time in since 1973, the Mustang would feature a 351ci (5.8L) pushrod engine beating under its hood, and that has that legendary Ford V8 sound at idle and while driving which reminds us of the performance days of the late 1960s mated to modern technology. The fully EPA-certified electronically fuel-injected Windsor V8 power levels were said to exceed 300 hp and 360 tq (read more below). This car speaks for itself in person; and drives and sounds even better. The description below provides a representation of the diligence and care taken in its continued preservation and longevity while also honoring its exclusivity and period of manufacture. The upgrades would be considered period correct for this vehicle and the original parts noted are included in the sale. Please see below for additional details. Cobra R Specific Ford Factory Features- Built on the Ford Assembly Line - Vehicle 172- 5.8L 351ci V8; 300hp, 360tq (currently estimated to be 345hp 415tq at crankshaft - read more below)- Tremec 3550-02 transmission (original)- 3.27:1 Traction Lock Differential (original)- Koni Adjustable Shocks (original)- High Rate Springs / Lowered Stance (original)- Cobra R specific stabilizer bars (original)- Raised Fiberglass Hood with Ford Part number (original; only numbered on Cobra R's)- Heavy Duty DeGas Cooling System (original)- Fuel Safe 22-Gallon fuel tank (original tank; seam welded, no bladder, holds fuel; one way check valves in fuel pump baffle replaced at 30,000 miles)- Cobra R specific offset 17x9" wheels with 255/45-17 tires (replaced with BF Goodrich Comp TA)- Cloth Seats (original; common with Cobra)- Center Console (original)- Full Carpet (original; no stains or crushing)- Finished Interior Trim (original; no stains or tears)- Power Steering (original)- Power Disc Brakes with ABS (original)- Stainless Steel Cobra R Specific Headers (original)- Cobra R 5.8 Specific Upper Intake (original; no mods)- Cobra R 65mm throttle Body (original; no mods)- Cobra R specific mass air meter (original 1996 Cobra pull ahead part)- Cobra R Specific Computer Tune (original computer with piggy back chip; read more below)- Engine Oil Cooler (original)- White Paint (original; no peeling or cracking; no license plate holes in front bumper)- Tan Interior and Carpet (original; no stains or crushing)Modifications- Ford GT40X heads (original GT40P heads included in sale)- Roller Cam and hydraulic lifters (comp camp 35-351-8; idles nicely and runs fine, sounds like and very similar to original cam; better for today's oil than the factory flat tappet; original flat tappet and lifters included in sale; camshaft degreed and dialed in, piston to valve clearance checked)- Replaced distributor gear to metal type suitable for roller cam as recommended by Comp Cams- Replaced timing chain and gears with OE Ford Part - 2000 Cobra R style side exit exhaust by SpinTech (not loud or offensive, no drone; original 95R pipes and mufflers included in sale)- BBK H-Pipe with catalytic converters (original 95R H-pipe with cats and resonators included in sale)- Computer Retune: Fuel (raised to match airflow need) and timing re-curve (reduced from 60-degrees total advance to 45-degrees to accommodate 91 octane 10% ethanol blend pump fuel - approximately 290hp 350tq at rear wheels per dynamometer). I did some reading on this; back in 1995 fuels didn't contain ethanol so more total advance timing could be originally programmed into the engine computer. This thoughtful retune which reduces total timing to modern fuel standards adds longevity to the engine components for street driving while also raising performance and maintaining Pennsylvania Vehicle Emissions standards (so it's a very sustainable tune suited for daily street driving).Current Status- Non-Smoking Car - Smells New Inside- Garage Kept Since New - everything is clear and crisp (no yellowing of headlights or paint, no decay of trim and gaskets)- Have Pennsylvania title in hand - Clear (auto check may indicate a lien; however title is clear)- Current Pennsylvania State Safety Inspection- Current Pennsylvania State Emissions Inspection- New BF Goodrich tires (first new set at 31,000 miles)- New Die-Hard Battery- Never driven in Rain or Snow- Original Paint - excellent (about 6 very minor stone chips about 3/32" diameter. . .tiny)- Original Interior - excellent, even smells new- Original Wheels - excellent, no mars or marks on finish- Original Lighting- Original Dash- Original Steering Wheel- Original Drivetrain - runs and drives true and straight- Original Cooling System- Replaced U-Joints with Spicer (original dried out)- Replaced throw out bearing with OE Ford part (original dried out)- Replaced fuel level sending unit with OE Ford part (original went bad)- Cooling system fluid flushed and replaced with Ford fluid- Power steering system flushed and replaced with Ford fluid- Transmission fluid drained and replaced with Ford fluid- Rear axle and differential fluid drained and replaced with Ford fluid and locker additive. Cam, heads, and dyno tune were added around 2500 miles. I change engine oil every 2000 miles (or at least once per year) with Mobile 1 synthetic and filter. The cooling system and power steering fluids were flushed and cleaned, transmission fluid changed, rear axle fluid changed and replaced with correct Ford oils at 25000 miles. This is the 10th collectible car I've owned and currently desire to sell. I know of no issues with the car. I am selling as I have moved onto other hobbies and interests. American Muscle, CJ Pony, Mustangs Unlimited, NAtional Parts DepoShelby, gt500, gt350, gt-500, gt-350, ft 350, gt 500, boss, Mach 1, Mach I, Roush, Saleen, Cobra, Cobra R, 2000 Cobra RI received a few phone calls on the car, the following questions are common to those calls: Why is your buy it now so low? I am simply moving on to other hobbies and interests in life. Is there anything wrong with the car? The car is in great mechanical shape, engine does not smoke nor use fluids (other than gasoline), transmission shifter is tight, transmission is quiet (no gear slap) rear is quiet with no noises. Can I buy it and drive it 500, 750 miles, etc?Yes. The car has current Pennsylvania state safety and emissions inspections through June 2016 How are the tires and brakes?Tires have just about 1500 miles on them and have a very nice wear pattern. The originals lasted for quite some time (refer to ad)Brakes passed Pa safety inspection and have a lot of pad left; rotors are original, not cut, and stop smoothly (doesn't pulsate) How is the clutch?Per the ad I replaced the throw out bearing and pilot bearing as the original TOB dried out. The clutch was inspected and looked like new so it was reinstalled. The clutch engages smoothly and doesn't chatter. Flywheel is original, smooth, (and not cut). How is the paint? The entire car is 99.9% perfect. The car has its original paint (has never been repainted; all the panel vin tags are in place). There are about 6-9 very small( 3/64" diameter) chips in the hood (scattered around) but no where else on the exposed body. The underside of the rocker panels are clean, the rear side of the wheel well openings (front and rear) are clean. How is the glass?Windshield has no streaks or pits. I don't think the wipers were ever turned on. Side and rear glass are perfect How are the wheels? No nicks, scratches, no curb rash. Original Center caps are in perfect condition. Included in sale are 4 new OE center caps. Anything Else?I looked at quite a few Cobra Rs before I purchased this one. Most cars showed the signs of track use. I am a car guy and take care of my hobby cars and that includes the mechanicals, exterior, and interior. I generally pass on buying a vehicle for the smallest details and this one passed my scrutiny and expectations. How is the cam and exhaust)The heads, cam, and retune netted about 15% power improvement (basically rear wheel horsepower is now very close to original Ford rated crankshaft output).the roller cam is very similar to the original flat tappet (intake/exhaust open/close, intake lobe centerline, lobe separation angle. I wanted to preserve the original idle quality and sound which this cam did exactly. The engine has a lot of low end torque and a very strong mid-range. The side exhaust has a nice thump at idle, which smooths out at s highway cruise rpm...the exhaust does not drone and I would say it's very similar to a 63-67 corvette with side pipes; it is quite reasonable, tolerable, and fun while adding to the cars period heritage. How did the mileage get on the car?I enjoy driving. The car went back and forth to Florida a few times where it then resided in my parents garage. Also went to the NJ and Maryland beaches several times. Skyline Drive. The New York State Adurondak Scenic Highway; several charity and mustang cruises, and a few other very nice drives through some amazing scenery. Has the car ever been tracked or raced? No. The vehicle only has domestic highway and street driven miles. Any more questions please send me an email.
