This 1927 Ford Model T isn't practical transportation, it isn't fast, it isn't a show piece, but it offers a delightful firefighter theme and dozens of interesting details that are all part of what make rat rods the most interesting things on four wheels. You can still see the Model T coupe under the satin black paint, but it's been chopped, channeled, and modified drastically from its original form, creating something entirely new. All the wood is gone from the body, so it feels surprisingly robust going down the road, and the trunk was custom made and uses a louver-filled lid for a custom old-school look. The doors offer fresh steel skins and a neat chop job to match the roof, and the bright red and yellow touches add to the fire chief look. The doors sport fire department logos and the siren and revolving red "gumball" light are cool additions (they're also removable if they're not legal where you live). You'll find dozens of other unique details, highlighted by a cut-down Model A grille with teeth and tongue, a luggage rack on the roof, 1959 Cadillac taillights, and the drilled windshield visor that gives it an industrial look. You can spend hours looking this car over and not see all the wonderful custom touches. The interior is likewise custom made and wonderfully funky. Most notably, almost everything on the floor is diamond-plate for a heavy-duty vibe and the custom-stitched seat cushions are a cool take on the traditional Mexican blanket theme. The ultra-tall shifter with piston knob and deep-dish steering wheel are fun twists on familiar tools and there's a useful array of switches and gauges in the dash, which itself was cribbed from a 1960 Chevy C10 pickup. There is no radio, no heater, no navigation system, not even a speedometer, and if you're looking for any of those things, well, perhaps you're missing the point of the rat rod. What this one does offer is a surprisingly comfortable driving position and good levels of fit and finish, because all the rough edges you see are purely intentional and beautifully executed. The trunk is pretty much filled by the axle housing and gas tank, but if you need to carry some stuff, this T will help you out. In lieu of the traditional Chevy V8, this one sports a rebuilt Chevrolet 153 cubic inch inline-four from an early Chevy II. There's a fresh Holley carburetor under a custom air cleaner assembly and just for fun, someone put a Cadillac script emblem on the valve cover. An HEI ignition system lights it up and a custom side header and exhaust pipe gives it a racy exhaust note that is more Offy than utilitarian econo-motor. A good-sized radiator up front keeps it cool without much effort and a TH350 3-speed automatic snaps off authoritative shifts. Out back, the rear end from a 1948 Ford truck, so it's not geared for high speeds but it will cruise pretty happily at 65 MPH. The frame is entirely custom built to give it that long, low look and it has the ideal stance sitting on 19-inch Model A wheels up front and 16-inch Ford V8 wheels out back wrapped in old-school-looking dirt tracker tires. This Model T is all about having fun and every single detail on it was done with a wink and a smile. It's also nicely sorted and a blast to drive, and we guarantee that you'll never, ever drive something that attracts more attention than this. They're simple, reliable, rugged machines, and their very design makes them incredibly easy to service, even for a relative novice. Parts are plentiful, knowledge is vast, and they are always welcome wherever old cars gather to be shown and driven. In fact, if you're a car guy of any stripe, you owe it to yourself to own a Model T at least once in your life. Finished in (what else?) basic black, this 1924 Model T tudor sedan has an honest, sensible look to it, both serious and unpretentious. It's easy to see your grandfather behind the wheel, but when you carefully examine the many period details, you'll find it a wonderful trip through time. The paint is neither too glossy nor totally worn out, showing a soft shine that looks like this T might be only a few years old instead of more than 80. Panel fit was decent when it was new and remains good today, with doors that open and close easily and a tight fit to the hood, all of which suggest this Model T has led a very easy life. The later cars like this had a bit less brass, but the radiator shell has a soft patina that adds some much-needed contrast to the all-black Ford and the rear-mounted spare is the archetypal "antique car" styling element. The interior is nicely restored, with correct cloth seating surfaces whose pleated contours are straight out of the '20s. Controls were simple, and it's quite easy to master driving a Model T with just a few minutes' familiarization with the three pedals and the hand throttle. The fat steering wheel makes steering easy, and the view from up high is commanding. There is no speedometer, so we have no way of knowing how many miles are on this particular T, but does it matter? These cars will run pratcially forever and service is extremely simple. It does, however, have an ammeter on the dash, which is Henry's way of saying he didn't trust the electric starter and why all Model Ts still had hand cranks, "just in case." The bare floors are a big part of the T's no-nonsense vibe, contrasting with the rather luxurious feeling upholstery and nicely finished headliner. With just 177 cubic inches making a rather modest 22 horsepower, the T is no high-speed cruiser. But thanks to its rugged design and simple systems, it will run at 35 MPH practically forever. It's not picky about fuel, and is so reliable that it would probably run on a combination of kerosene and Aqua-Velva. Ignition is by a magneto mounted on the dashboard in a wooden box, and the electrical system features a belt-driven generator and a new battery. The engine bay appears highly original and nicely maintained, with a lot of new components, all of which are readily available from a number of Model T suppliers. Underneath, it's a lot more durable than it looks and it appears that this is a very solid, clean original car. Tall 21-inch wood spoke wheels wear recent Firestone tires, and ride surprisingly well on modern streets. Don't overlook the Model T. People who own them are quite passionate, and one drive will demonstrate why.
