They're more than just a bunch of parts from a catalog, they're cars that respect the vintage iron and the period in which they were built. This awesome 1940 Ford tudor sedan is such a car. Sure, it packs a sweet-running 350 under the hood and a gorgeous paint job, but it's the details that will blow you away. Preserving the original design's integrity was obviously top on the builder's list, and all the wonderful details that Ford added to the car remain beautifully intact. The body has been restored to show standards, and is far straighter and smoother than anything coming out of a mass-production factory could possibly be. The paint is single-stage PPG Vineyard Green that shine under the lights and outside, yet it's also subtle and restrained without any flashy graphics to get in the way. Panel fit is exemplary, and it's awesome to see that they even kept the running boards in place. The Deluxe models used a updated version of 1939's pointed grille that has become one of the most enduring looks in hot rodding, and it's hard to imagine anything more handsome on the front of this green tudor. All the stainless trim has been polished to show standards, the glass is new and there isn't a single aspect of this car that hasn't been polished, buffed, and tweaked to a very high level. The salute to detail continues inside with a beautifully crafted interior that perfectly blends old and new in high fashion. The upholstery is caramel leather, stitched in patterns that are pure Art Deco sophistication. Subtlety is the key, but this is an interior that invites you in and convinces you to stay, and you could happily spend many thousands of miles behind the wheel. Ford's original uncluttered dash design remains intact, right down to the plain glove box door, and the instruments are very vintage-looking thanks to the guys at Red Line Gauge Works. Even the steering wheel is the original unit slightly modified for use here, complete with a tilt steering column. Hidden behind the chrome speaker grille are the controls for the A/C and the power windows are actuated by switches using the original window cranks. The back seat is finished to the same high standards and the carpets are bound with matching caramel leather for a very upscale look. In back, the trunk is finished for utility and offers a space-saver spare, just in case. Built with reliability in mind, this Ford packs a 350 cubic inch Chevy crate motor. It's smooth, powerful, and easy to maintain, thanks to a 4-barrel carb, Edelbrock Air Gap intake manifold, and electronic ignition. Up top, a mid-50s Cadillac air cleaner and finned valve covers are fitted, all of which have been painted green to match the bodywork. There's a minimum of chrome, so it still has a vintage look, although the billet accessory drive is a thing of beauty. Underneath, there are disc brakes up front, a 700R4 4-speed automatic overdrive transmission for easy cruising, and a 9-inch rear full of 3.70 gears, all neatly engineered to work without a fuss. The cool painted steel wheels with hubcaps and trim rings and wearing vintage 15-inch whitewall radials are a brilliant touch, too! There's not one part on this whole car that wasn't carefully planned and finished to an incredibly high standard, and the workmanship makes the price look like a screaming bargain. No wild graphics, no over-styled interior, and no finicky hardware, just a beautifully finished white Ford with V8 power and an interior that's a lot nicer than the average rod. Fat fendered Fords are red hot right now, probably because they offer full-sized comfort and a ton of style. The wide grille is simple yet instantly recognizable, and the body is a slightly larger variation of the timeless 1940 coupe look. This one was completed in 2013 and enjoyed like it should be: out on the road. The glossy white finish still looks great, with a clean, uncluttered look that works rather well. Workmanship was obviously expertly done when the car was built, so the doors fit well, the fenders are snug to the body, and the hood, which is always problematic on these cars, fits well and stays open without assistance. Most of the trim has been shaved, but on a white car, you don't need a lot of shiny bits, so the grille, bumpers, and taillight housings were painted to match, giving it a clean, monochromatic look. A few subtle pinstripes highlight the smooth body shape, but for the most part, it's permitted to speak for itself. The interior was all-new when it was built and features front buckets astride a custom center console. Gray and purple vinyl and cloth over power Mustang buckets gives it an upscale look, and the materials are durable so even today the interior looks fresh. The door panels are simple and not over-wrought and comfort was a priority so the armrests are actually in the right place and again, were borrowed from a Fox-body Mustang. Even the window garnish moldings were painted to match the body, which works well with the smooth dash. Power windows, A/C, a tilt steering column, and a powerful AM/FM/CD stereo provide the expected levels of comfort, making this a rod you can drive every day or cross-country on the Power Tour. The original dash was smoothed and stuffed full of VDO gauges and a big T-handle shifter manages the transmission. The sizable trunk is upholstered in simple gray carpet with custom side panels and a hidden compartment for the hardware working behind the scenes. For reliability and performance, nothing beats a 350 cubic inch Chevy topped by an Edelbrock intake and 4-barrel carburetor. Polished aluminum valve covers and a matching ball-milled air cleaner give it a suitably hot rod look when you pop the hood, but it was clearly intended to be easy to service and dead-reliable on the road. The firewall and inner fenders were smoothed and the plumbing was neatly routed where it wouldn't draw a lot of attention to itself. It's backed by a TH350 3-speed automatic and a rear end lifted from a Camaro, and you'll find a disc brake at all four corners. A Chevy II front suspension with tubular A-arms from Fat Man Fabrication was grafted onto the stock frame, while a set of leaf springs hold up the 10-bolt rear with highway-friendly 3.08 gears inside. A great-sounding dual exhaust system was recently installed, and it rolls on handsome Weld billet aluminum wheels with 215/70/15 front and 235/70/15 rear Firestone radials. Sometimes simple is better, and this Ford delivers an ideal combination of performance, comfort, style, and reliability.
