Based on legendary designer Virgil Exner's 'Forward Look' body, the 1956 Chrysler Windsor was positioned low to supplement the brand's hot 300 series. The spectacular and correct Sand Dune Beige and Rosewood example you see here currently wears a high quality, frame-up restoration that has been exceptionally maintained. Owned by one family for over 40 years, and never separated from its chassis, the car's 100% original body exhibits minimal signs of wear and still proudly displays original service stickers in unrestored door jambs. Re-chromed original bumpers and polished original stainless look almost as good as the day they left the showroom. And it all adds up to one hot coupe that, considering its restoration history, exhibits impeccable fit and finish. The futuristic feel of 'Chrysler PowerStyle', the brand's detailing of Exner's 'Forward Look' bodies, helped mark the debut of jet-age Detroit design that would continue for several years. And, although Chrysler's aerodynamic ingenuity proved especially useful in motorsports, it was the firm's style quotient that quickly sent the market into frenzy. At the front of this classic's rounded body, a chrome, silver-detailed grille hangs an AACA Senior National First plaque between clear marker lamps, a thick bumper, chrome-trimmed headlights and a small header shield. Above that grille, a streamlined hood topper leads the eye to a SuperScenic windshield, pillarless greenhouse glass and a Clearbac backlight. Nicely upgraded with a Hemi intake, Carter carburetors and Hemi heads, the engine appears to wear a roster of era-correct components, from its 'bat wing' air cleaner and dent-free oil pan all the way to its heavy duty radiator and MoPar Jiffy-Jet washer bag. Fire is provided by a traditional Chrysler distributor, which sequences sparks between a vintage generator and fresh Taylor plug wires.The block's clean Aluminum paint contrasts well against the car's Sand Dune engine bay. And little details like "Chrysler FirePower" valve covers, old school fuel bowls and a MoPar green cap battery round out a heavy dose of eyeball appeal. That tough driveline spins in a PowerStyle undercarriage that's complete with robust control arms, stiff leaf springs and PowerPilot steering. At the corners of that chassis, PowerSmooth drums ensure solid, fade-free stops. Between those drums, aluminized, true-dual exhaust employs fresh turbo mufflers that sound deep and civilized. And all this road-worthy hardware rolls on old school wire wheels which spin meaty 7.60-15 BF Goodrich Silvertown whitewalls. Take a look inside this coupe and you'll find a mostly original interior that has enough room to haul the whole family in comfort! Front and rear bench seats, which still feel firm to the touch, hang attractive white covers under silver pipes and plaid centerpieces. As this 1947 Chrysler Windsor sedan proves, you could get a full-sized Chrysler for not a lot of cash, a fact that's true even today. The neo-fastback shape of this big sedan has aged rather well, and between the gracefully flowing front fenders and the swooping rear deck line, this is one heck of a good looking car. There are some who loved Chrysler's "electric shaver" front end, and when you look at the entire package, it has a restraint that's commendable and a chiseled look that's aged rather well. The medium blue paint is actually pretty close to the original code 1 Military Blue that this car wore originally, maybe a little brighter but certainly no less handsome. All four doors open and close with that solid sound that you just don't get in cars these days, and the trunk lid fits better than most. The bumpers have been recently re-chromed, a big expense on a car like this and probably a good 10% of the asking price all by themselves. The rest of the stuff is a combination of good original trim and polished stainless that needs little more than a quick buff to look its best. The bright blue plaid interior is a cool riff on the original Highlander upholstery of the period. Yes, that's pretty close to how the factory might have done it, although the vinyl might be a shade or two brighter. Either way, it looks cool and the workmanship is good, so you'll find the interior of this Windsor to be a great place to hang out with some friends. The big steering wheel gives you a sense of power and the comprehensive dashboard has a very cool look reminiscent of a juke box, particularly with that cool center stack with integrated radio speaker. All the gauges appear functional, the clock has stopped, which isn't unusual, and sadly, the AM radio isn't working either, but otherwise it's ready to cruise. It's worth noting that this Windsor has a standard 3-speed manual transmission with the Fluid-Drive setup, where you dont have to push the clutch in while coming to a stop. And in addition to the spacious back seat, there's a giant trunk out back, making this big sedan a fine candidate for long tours. Don't underestimate Chrysler's 250 cubic inch inline-six, this is the little engine that could! Smooth and torquey, it pulls the big sedan up to speed and doesn't seem to sweat keeping up with modern traffic. It's still quite stock, from the oil bath air cleaner, to the downdraft carburetor, to the cast iron manifolds, and few engines before or since are more reliable. Parts are still plentiful and it's so simple that just about anyone can work on it with just basic tools. It's not detailed for show, but it does have plenty of new components and runs quite nicely. The 3-speed manual shifts properly with decent clutch action and the hydraulic brakes are reasonable given the car's age. The ride is plush and it'll happily cruise all day and even pulls down reasonable fuel economy. The underside is about the same as the engine bay, original, but that only means it's OK to drive just about anywhere, any time. Big 7.00-15 wide whites on factory steel wheels with hubcaps complete the cool '40s vibe. A neat old sedan with a lot of charisma, great road manners, and a very affordable price tag. If you're a hardcore Chrysler collector who's itching for the ultimate investment grade big fin letter car, this all-American cruiser will have you reminiscing about the late '50s and great Americana. Chrysler's research during wartime and their development work on a new engine for the P-47 Thunderbolt led to the now-famous hemispherical combustion chamber design, or as us car guys like to refer to it as the "Hemi". However, the 300C was incredible not only because of its power, but it also was loved by many because of its exceptional handling that resulted from a lowered placement of the heavy engine and careful location of the rear leaf springs. The 300C's futuristic design helped mark the debut of jet age Detroit styling trends that would continue for several years. And although Chrysler's aerodynamic ingenuity came in handy at Daytona Beach, where a fire breathing 390 horsepower Hemi propelled the car to 134 MPH, it was the firm's style quotient that quickly sent the market into a frenzy. At the front of this rag-top's sculpted body is a bold, 'yawning' grille that hangs a red, white and blue "300" emblem between chrome trimmed 'increased visibility' headlamps and innovative brake cooling ducts. Below that grille is an original, re-chromed bumper wrapping clear marker light into pristine stainless fender trim; and above that grille, a fresh chrome "CHRYSLER" script combines with a grafted center fin to detail the car's massive hood. At the sides of the car's body, rolled fenders flow into smooth fins behind great looking stainless trim and large red, white and blue "300" emblems. Below that trim, dent-free stainless gravel shields protect the fenders from the car's twist happy tires; and above the trim is stylish chrome mirrors that combine with flush chrome door handles to lend a healthy dose of form and function. At the top of the car, an angled windshield and like-new greenhouse glass ride between a fresh tan top, bright opposing windshield wipers and polished original trim. With this car's 392 cubic inch Firepower V8 Chrysler created a big block legend that's still highly regarded as a revolutionary blend of performance and luxury. Induction is handled by a pair of gold air cleaners that are piped directly into two high performance Carter 4-barrel carburetors. Fire is provided by a high performance points distributor which shoots sparks between a tagged 30 amp generator and fresh black plug wires. Combustion comes courtesy of a high performance camshaft which breathes through a high performance intake and low restriction exhaust manifolds. Aesthetically, the engine's fresh aluminum paint contrasts well against cool gold valve covers and the car's glossy Gauquin Red engine bay. And little details like stainless lines, rebuilt horns, a reproduction Mopar red cap battery, a correct Silentflite fan drive and a cool Jiffy Jet washer bag provide tons of exciting eyeball appeal. Put the 300C on a lift and you'll see that bolted to the massive HEMI is the original pushbutton A488 Torqueflite 3-speed automatic push button transmission that sends power to the 8 rear axle. As a test bed for production of extensive aluminum components, the Prowler said that anything was possible; and through it and the acclaimed Viper, Chrysler was all about exploring performance-based niche markets. Today, with public scrutiny at an all-time high, it's very unlikely that such a remarkable car would ever get built. And with that in mind, it's a sure-fire bet that future collectors will prize the Prowler. Fortunately, one of RK Motors Charlotte's many specialties is giving you the chance to buy first rate, low-mileage collector cars before prices become insanely high. And this factory-fresh Prowler Mulholland Edition, a hand-built custom that possesses OEM quality and sports car performance, presents the perfect opportunity to own a 21st century hot rod! Named for legendary Mulholland Drive in Southern California, this special edition drop-top is one of the first 1,281 Chrysler Prowlers to roll down the production line. Judging by its clean finish and mirror-like reflections, the car has rarely seen rain. Since all Prowlers were completely hand-built at Chrysler's storied Conner Avenue Assembly, they typically show above average build quality. This roadster, with its narrow gaps, solid-closing doors and tight-sealing top, looks better than most cars that cost twice our asking price. And, with striking Midnight Blue two-stage and a hand-painted Dr. Ru pinstripe, the car sits as one super slick head-turner that exhibits a perfect combination style and technology! Like all of Chrysler's stylish 90s metal, this convertible's killer detailing is brilliantly executed over smooth and taut proportions. At the front of the car, contrasting black bumpers hang crystal clear parking lamps just ahead of Indy-style wheels, composite, projector beam headlights and a heritage-inspired grille. Above that grille, a pointed hood centers a monochromatic, Prowler-specific emblem in front of a pristine, factory windshield. Behind that windshield, a color-keyed top hangs a glass porthole between body-matched mirrors and flared rockers that mimic classic running boards. Behind those running boards, rolled fenders feature smooth-fitting tail lights that are straight out of the hot rodder's handbook. And at the back of the car, a trunk-mounted Center High Mount Stop Lamp illuminates two more bumpers and pristine, stainless exhaust tips. When Prowlers finally hit the streets, many purists were upset that a V6 was the only powertrain option. What those purists failed to realize was: 1) with 253 horses and 250 lb./ft. of torque, the car's 3.5 liter, 24-valve SOHC V6 was making virtually the same power as Chrysler's Magnum V8s, and 2) when combined with the car's lightweight chassis and low center of gravity, it posted some very impressive performance numbers. Mechanically, this Plymouth's all-aluminum engine is showroom new in just about every possible way. Naturally, the mill has benefitted from basic maintenance but, beyond that, everything is essentially fresh out of the box. It certainly appears that the car has been driven often enough to keep every system in top operating condition. And, not only does the smooth sixer fire up instantly and idle perfectly, it moves its relatively lightweight payload with real authority. Behind that buff V6, a 42LE 4-speed automatic transaxle, which features an 'AutoStick' gear change setting, is more of a toy than a functional performance improvement. But it fits the Prowler's persona perfectly, and far more of today's "real" hot rods are built with automatics than stick shifts. So, who can blame Chrysler for doing their homework and giving the public what it actually wants? That road-ready drivetrain is held off the ground by an aluminum-intensive chassis, which is equipped with an independent double A-arm front and multi-link rear suspension. Dynamic Suspensions coil-overs combine with standard stabilizer bars and power rack and pinion steering to carve curves for lunch and eat potholes for dinner. Stops come courtesy of four composite discs, which measure 11 inches up front and 13 inches out back. The engine growls a rowdy, throaty exhaust note through two fat pipes, which exit just under the rear bumpers. A bit of flash is provided by stylish chrome wheels, which spin 225/45R17 Goodyear Eagle GS-Ds in front of 295/40R20 Goodyear Eagle GS-Ds. And all that advanced hardware results in a perfect 50/50 weight distribution, making this roadster an absolute blast to drive! Inside Chrysler's neo street rod you'll find a fashionable leather interior that represents drop-top cruising at its very best. At the center of the cockpit, the driver and passenger benefit from plush bucket seats that are stitched around monochromatic Prowler logos. In front of the driver, an Auto Meter tachometer is perched top-dead-center of a tilting steering wheel, which anchors redundant audio buttons opposite cruise control buttons. Early 300s sell for well into six-figures, but this 1964 Chrysler 300 offers the same kind of big horsepower luxury without the staggering price tag. The look clearly shares its DNA with the industrial-strength Mopars that were terrorizing drag strips around the country in the early 1960s, and it scales up pretty well. This is a big car, the kind that once roamed the wide-open spaces of America with a hovercraft-like ride and enough horsepower to push it through the air without breaking a sweat. There are signs of Virgil Exner's brilliance in the headlights and front fender sculpting and the soft green paint keeps it from looking too heavy. It was repainted about four years ago, so it looks quite good, even up close, and by using modern paint technology, it'll keep this look for years to come. They weren't quite ready to give up tailfins over at Chrysler, so there are vestigial chrome-tipped ridges on the rear quarters, and the slashing side trim makes the car look about a mile long. Good chrome, particularly the intricate bumpers, shows well against the soft green finish and this is the kind of car that will attract attention everywhere it goes just because few have ever seen one before. Bucket seats and a console were a luxury/muscle tradition from the earliest days, and it's awesome to see it in this full-sized hardtop. Chrysler's styling department nailed the futuristic look with clean cloth and vinyl buckets, lots of stainless trim, and a gorgeous steering wheel with horn rings that seem to float. The instrument panel is big, bold, and easy to read with round gauges arrayed as they would be in a sports car. Push-button heater controls are at your fingertips and the original AM radio is so neatly integrated into the dash that it becomes a styling element all by itself. The entire interior was restored at the same time the body was painted, so the upholstery, carpets, and other soft parts remain in very good condition. It's not heavily optioned, but when your base car looks this good, you really don't need a lot of other equipment to make a driver happy. And for road trips, nothing beats a big car with a big engine and a big trunk, the latter of which is finished with a reproduction mat and a full-sized spare. 383 cubic inches makes for effortless driving and the big block was rebuilt about 12,000 miles ago, so it runs quite well. The engine bay is a combination of restored and original pieces, with a correct air cleaner atop the burly V8. Service access is excellent thanks to the massive engine bay, and with a car this size, power steering and brakes are mandatory. A TorqueFlite 3-speed automatic shifts almost imperceptibly although the new Flowmaster exhaust system with X-pipe will surely provide aural indications that a shift has occurred. Standard hubcaps and 215/75/14 whitewall radials help keep things low-key, but this is really a fantastic long-distance machine. Unique, powerful, and nicely finished, you probably never thought you could get this much sheetmetal for so little cash. If you like to be just a bit out of the ordinary, this Chrysler is a great choice.
