The ones to own are the final iterations like this 2005 example, which offers just 17,912 original miles, a powerful 6.0 liter V8, as well as that screaming yellow paint job. Ostensibly based on the Advance Design pickups of the late-40s, the SSR is perhaps the most unique blend of retro and modern we've had to date. Not merely a modern version of something old, but an entirely new niche. Is it a pickup truck? A muscle car? A convertible? Following the truck's most interesting body lines, the work was expertly done, adding to the retro truck's street rod vibe. And with only 18,000 or so miles on the clock, it still looks showroom fresh in every sense of the word. Once you're inside the SSR, it's pretty easy to forget the pickup truck look, because it's more Camaro than Cameo from behind the wheel. Deeply bolstered black leather buckets grab you in aggressive cornering, while a color-matched center console between them offers secondary controls and a big chrome shifter that's straight out of the '60s. Auxiliary gauges down low add to the muscle car vibe, and the original instruments were clearly designed to recall those in the original Camaro with three deep, round binnacles. The A/C is powerful, the stereo sounds awesome, and there are few cooler feats of automotive acrobatics than the folding hardtop, which disappears with the touch of a button. The only notable modification is a wind blocker between the seats, an effective addition that makes it all the more pleasant inside. And instead of thinking of the rear area as a pickup bed, check out the neatly tailored black carpet mat that effectively turns it into one of the world's biggest trunks. One quick blast down the road with your foot on the floor will convince you that this is, indeed, a performance vehicle. The 6.0 liter V8 is a big step up from the early SSR's 5.3, and completely transforms the vehicle's personality. Fast, but docile, with a raucous exhaust bark that doesn't get annoying, it's the ultimate modern small block. Linked to a slick-shifting automatic transmission and a heavy-duty suspension, it likes to hustle and will feel at home on your favorite twisty road as much as on the highway. Built in limited numbers, and by the time this 2004 example was built, it had established itself as the modern pickup for the guy who loved street rods but didn't want to build his own. And with a supercharged engine, this one is a lot more than merely interesting to look at. Yellow is not one of the SSR's more subtle colors, but there's no mistaking that shape, which was strongly influenced by the Advance Design pickups of the late-40s. The grille, the rounded fenders, and the deep-draw rear fenders that suggest a stepside box are all design cues that take us back in time. But at the same time, the advanced materials that form the body of this truck are what made it practical to build, and with just over 46,000 original miles, it remains in great condition. The finish is quite good for being more than a decade old, although it has been driven and enjoyed so it's no longer perfect. This one also features an exterior chrome package and teak planks in the cargo area that tie it directly to its inspirational heritage. The interior is pure 21st century cool. Forget bench seats and rubber floor mats, this one has black leather buckets that would look at home in a Corvette plus every luxury and convenience feature you can imagine. Ice cold A/C, a powerful stereo, and power everything (including the folding hardtop) are at your fingertips. The 4-speed automatic overdrive transmission makes it easy to drive, especially with the blown powerplant under the hood, making transforming the truck into a muscle car that can run with some pretty serious hardware, yet remains light and easy to drive around town. The leather seating surfaces show only the most minor signs of having been used, and the black carpets are excellent.. This is car you can drive every day or park for six months and be confident that it'll start the first time. Horsepower was the thing the early SSRs needed most, and most came with a 5.3 liter engine that was hard-pressed to deliver the thrills that the swoopy bodywork suggested. Fortunately, this one has neatly remedied that problem thanks to a Magnacharger supercharger sitting proudly atop the snarling V8. With a polished finish, it looks suitably hot rod under the hood, and since the hardware underneath is related to the mill used in Chevy trucks, so it has outstanding torque and will probably last practically forever. It offers great V8 sounds thanks to a throaty exhaust system, so it has the soundtrack to match its performance, although the quiet blower doesn't really advertise itself until it's too late. Powerful disc brakes, a grippy but compliant suspension, and quick steering help it bridge the gap between muscle car and pickup truck. Staggered factory wheels wear optional chrome plating and 255/45/19 front and 295/40/20 rear Goodyear tires. Still as stunning today as it was ten years ago when it hit the market, the SSR is quite possibly the first and only no-compromises muscle car and that little horsepower problem has been completely solved.
