That is what made this car a sleeper legend that has spawned some seriously cool custom builds like this one, that spare no expense. How else can you explain this freshly restored 1963 Chevrolet Chevy II Nova SS with beautiful metallic paint, and a fresh performance-built 450 hp V8 under the hood? Chevrolet made these Nova SS cars sleepers from the factory, and that attitude has served it well right into modern times. Rendered in extremely slick and fashionable metallic burnt orange paint, most take one look at the sleek lines and figure that it has to be customized. But the truth is, this is just the product of a quality frame-off restoration that was finished only a few months ago. Aside from the cowl induction hood and billet grille, the rest of the car is original GM styling. Even most of the trim remains intact, including the rocker moldings, SS badges, and bright chrome bumpers front and rear. Even the Rally wheels are a factory piece, but of course, having them painted in the car's custom orange is a nice cue that this one is a cut above. The ProCar black vinyl buckets do the perfect job of being exceptionally comfortable, but the seatbacks don't rise above the doorline. This is particularly important because people can see all the way through the sideview on this pillarless hardtop, which is always the coolest kind of profile. There's a high center console in-between the buckets to rest your arm on a long trip, and that's just the first of many thoughtful comfort features. This includes an AM/FM digital stereo that's also adaptable to modern tunes, and an ice-cold air conditioning system to keep everyone happy. But even if this is the Nova that can carry the family in comfort, it's still a driver's car at its heart. That's why you have a leather-wrapped sports steering wheel, and beyond that, the full set of Classic Instruments gauges tell you there is something wicked under the hood. While this Nova looks custom-built from every angle, you can tell the budget was really blown in the engine bay. This is a 383 cubic-inch stroker V8, a nice upgrade from the 6 cylinder that would have came stock in all Chevy II's this year. One of GM's best motors, the 383 has been further enhanced and fortified with performance goodies such as Dart aluminum heads, Edelbrock Performer Air Gap intake, cast steel crank, forged I-beam connecting rods, high performance pistons, Scorpion Racing roller rockers, Comp Cams roller camshaft, and long tube headers. There's even more to list, but we don't have the room here. Instead, we'll be happy to share the build receipts with you for all the details, and it will also show that this one is barely broken-in with a few years, and less than 1,000 miles on it, since built. But all you really need to know is that the full package is rated at 450 horsepower, and everyone will acknowledge this muscle the moment they hear the performance H-pipe dual exhaust. You also won't have trouble getting this power to the road, thanks to a stout TCI Streetfighter TH350 three-speed automatic with 2200 RPM stall converter to keep you in the powerband. This is backed up by a 10-bolt rear end, borrowed from the '71 Nova, which was equipped to handle a high-performance V8s like this. But there's also a more comfortable side to this Nova. You saw it in the interior, and you'll also feel it on the road with everyday convenient features like power steering and the front disc brakes. Add that to the adjustable front independent suspension, and lowered rear, and you've got the perfect recipe for everything from go out cruising for a little fun on a Saturday night, to enjoying the long haul on the Power Tour. Here's show-stopping looks on a freshly restored, and beastly first-gen Nova SS. It doesn't get much better than this, and it will be hard to find anything this quality for the price again. With a massive 470 cubic-inch V8, and plenty of go-fast components, you'll never believe the bargain price. It's obvious from the moment you lay eyes on this coupe that it's no ordinary Nova. The paint has a sparkle that leaves it somewhere between candy apple red and deep burgundy. It's even a rare hatchback model, which was produced in far less numbers than the standard coupe. But that's not what's really grabbing your attention. It's probably the large power-dome hood complete with hoodpins. You can also easily see that the rear set of Weld Prostar wheels carries much wider tires. All of this tells you there is some serious power that's trying to be harnessed in this Nova. You get more hints of this car's power upgrades when you open the door. The black vinyl front bucket seats are newer and carry better grip and bolstering. In between those buckets is a fire extinguisher, as well as a performance Hurst Quarter Stick shifter that features launch control. When you slip behind the wheel, you'll notice it's a grippy Grant sport unit. Don't be dismayed by the original factory speedometer. The full panel unit is bright and clearer than just about anything you could pick up on the aftermarket. To the right of it is a full set of auxiliary gauges, including a huge shiftlight tachometer, mounted high so you can't miss it. No radio; no problem. One turn of the key, and the thundering exhaust note will make you forget about anything on the FM dial. Take one look under the hood, and you'll know what all the fuss is about. No Nova got a 454 cubic-inch big-block motor from the factory, but that's far from the only thing that makes this one so special. The block was built to 470 ci, and done professionally by Fessler Racing Engines in Troy, MO. It includes a Brodix top end combo (intake, head, springs, etc.), Lunati hydraulic roller cam, Lunati lifters, Scat steel crank & rods, Cloyes gear drive, MSD ignition, and Keith Black pistons. The exhaust runs into Hooker competition length headers on its way through a FlowMaster dual exhaust system, with performance H-pipe construction. Not only does it sound amazingly aggressive, but also the full package is rated at a whopping 592 hp! Getting all this power to the ground starts with the stout TH350 three-speed automatic, with 3,500 RPM stall converter. It then goes to a Ford nine-inch rear end, running a 4.11 ratio for serious power takeoffs. You know this was built to reliably hookup with the pavement with features like the subframe connectors and the full set of sticky Mickey Thompson Sportsman tires (including the wide 275/60R15 rubber in the rear.) There's even plenty of control over this wild beast thanks to features like the power steering and front disc brakes. We've got the full file on this one including the maintenance records and over $12K in restoration receipts. But all you really need to know is there's a plaque on the dash that reads, "Never drive faster than you angel can fly." Hurry up before someone realizes how much speed is here for so little money. That's what makes this highly original 1966 Chevrolet II Nova SS so special. Not too many had a 327 V8 installed at the factory, so this coupe is fast and rare. Someone took very special care to make sure that everything on this Chevy II Nova Super Sport is so well preserved. The exceptional fit and finish help emphasize the Nova's clean, straight lines, and the factory-correct shade of Lemonwood Yellow benefits from a professional respray. Keeping a low profile was vital to the Nova's street cred, so the classic and understated color lets the hardware underneath do all the talking. Of course, Chevrolet left hints at performance on every side of the car, with special SS badging on the chrome grille, and bright rear panel, as well as the elegant "Super Sport" script on each rear fender. There were even special hubcaps in this package. So it would be tough to call this car pristine, and authentic, without all these elements in place. Purely stock is the way to go with a car of this caliber. So the correct bucket seats, with a chrome center console in between them, is another hallmark of the SS package. Everything looks factory original, from the chrome accents on the black door panels, to the heat/defrost controls, to even the push-button AM radio. The woodgrain steering wheel gives this all a nice upscale touch, and beyond that are the wide, clear gauges you love on a 60s American classic like this. Lift the hood and you'll see a refreshingly unmolested engine bay. The 327 cubic-inch engine shows all signs of being the same one installed at the Willow Run plant in September, 1966. This L30 motor is sought-after, and a somewhat rare option today. Compared to the L79, this one was happy to trundle through traffic without complaint, and has a fat bottom end that makes it the ideal street sleeper. It breathes nicely through a newer performance H-pipe exhaust system with Flowmaster mufflers. If this SS is starting to sound like the perfect mix of comfortable cruiser, and intimidating muscle car, you'd be right. That's why it has great features like the stout three-speed transmission, power steering, and front disc brakes. This is a Nova SS that was a sleeper when new, and now it's a preserved with the original owner's manual and maintenance receipts to prove it. It's a head-turning classic coupe at an affordable price. That being said, sharp sheetmetal paled in comparison to the car's most significant upgrade: the legendary L79 option. As intentionally nondescript as the Super Sport trim it accompanied, L79 netted the car's lucky new owner a 327 cubic inch, 350 horsepower small block that was cribbed directly from the Corvette. That mill was certainly a hit, as a little over 5,400 of the red-hot bowties were ordered. But, unfortunately, most were purchased strictly for the quarter mile, which means, thanks to the law of attrition, finding an authentic L79 Nova is becoming increasingly difficult. Well, as you know, your friends at RK Motors Charlotte take pride in specializing in rare and hard to find classics. And that's why we're proud to feature this fully documented, registry-listed L79 Nova. Wrapping a numbers-matching drivetrain in correct Marina Blue on Black aesthetics, this highly original wonder transforms the phrase "investment grade compact" from oxymoron into fact! BODYWORK/TRIM The beneficiary of a partial restoration that was conducted in the mid '90s, this Nova is a sharp weekend cruiser that currently presents much better than original factory fodder. During the car's precise reboot, solid sheetmetal was completely striped of its dull, original pigment. With that shell removed, and its foundation massaged into great alignment, correct Marina Blue base was sealed in mirror-like clear. And today, one close look at our high-resolution pictures reveals a handsome payoff in the form of one slick Chevrolet muscle car! The subdued and classy lines of the prototypical Nova are early '60s conservative. And because they're so universal in appeal, they've continued to gain significant popularity. At the front of this hardtop, a correct, black-trimmed grille hangs a classy "CHEVY II SS" badge between a mirrored bumper, clear parking lamps and bright, stainless-trimmed headlights. Above that grille, a finned hood anchors a simple Chevrolet crest in front of clean glass, polished wipers and straight stainless frames. At the sides of that hood, a clean, modernist profile centers small fender emblems and traditional door handles between straight wheel trim, a familiar bowtie mirror and correct Super Sport rocker guards. And at the back of the car, correct Super Sport trunk trim hangs red-detailed badging between vertical tail lamps and a second mirrored bumper. ENGINE Even if you forget everything else we tell you about this Chevy II, be sure to pay VERY close attention to what's under the car's hood. Motivating this real-deal Super Sport is a 1966-exclusive L79 V8 that, according to the factory, twists stout 11 to 1 compression into 350 Corvette-matching horsepower. Savvy collectors will quickly locate the original 327's correct 3791362 casting number, correct "ZI" suffix stamp and matching partial VIN. Casual observers will be quick to notice the mill's L79-exclusive polished, twin-snorkel air cleaner. And everyone will start to vibe when air and fuel flow from a big Holley carburetor in to a hot Winters intake that's framed by high-flow cylinder heads! That air/fuel mixture meets spark thanks to Packard TV R Suppression Cables, which crawl around polished valve covers on their way to a correct points distributor. Spent gases fall in to old school cast iron exhaust manifolds. There's a tagged radiator that joins a rebuilt alternator, a rebuilt master cylinder and a reproduction Delco battery to round out the car's first-rate ancillaries. And, when it comes to keeping up appearances, the entire engine compartment, from its Chevy Orange block to its Satin Black fenders, is clean, attractive and ready to roll! DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION One look under this sturdy compact reveals a solid chassis that's just as ready for the road as that stout 327. Power flows through an original Muncie 4-speed, which hangs a Muncie (P) assembled on March (03) 18th (18) 1966 build stamp behind a correct 3885010 casting number. That transmission twists a correct 12-bolt axle. Holding that virtually unbreakable drivetrain off the ground is a restored double A-arm front and leaf spring rear suspension. Stops come courtesy of manual drum brakes. Exhaust flows from the aforementioned manifolds to modern, aluminized pipes, which precede DynoMax Super Turbo mufflers with an H-shaped crossover. The body's unrestored floors wear a thick layer of original undercoating. And all that old school Americana rolls on traditional Chevrolet Rallies, which spin F70-14 Firestone redlines around polished trim rings and low profile center caps. INTERIOR Regardless of what motor made its way in to the subframe, the Nova always stayed true to its simplistic roots. No place was that more evident than in the car's cockpit. Front and center, nicely restored thrones provide seating. A showroom-quality dash balances rebuilt gauges between a correct Delco pushbutton radio and an original, Maine-mandated 4-way flasher switch. Beneath that dash, a Corvette-style shifter rides a chrome-trimmed console, which floats on like-new carpet that's protected by color-keyed floor mats. At the sides of that carpet, classy door panels are, like the car's headliner and package tray, virtually devoid of weathering. In front of the driver, a wide steering wheel laps a polished, "CHEVY II" branded horn bar. And behind the passengers, a matted trunk hides a full-size spare tire beneath a decaled decklid. HISTORICAL INFORMATION A quick look at this Nova's VIN, cowl tag and Protect-O-Plate authenticates it status as a correct, real-deal L79 Super Sport. It just seemed to hit the sweet spot of power, roominess, affordability, and style that made them an icon, and this 1970 example represents it all so well. The first thing you notice on this coupe is the bright yellow paint. It's the perfect backdrop for the Rally Nova black band that follows a horseshoe pattern, starting at the front fenders and seamlessly runs until it meets on the rear panel. This cool triple stripe just seems to keep pointing the coupe forward. The sporty paint and graphics are an upgrade from its more mundane Classic White original paint, and it's a reflection of this Nova's more athletic attitude. You can see other elements of this in places like the wide horizontal grille, gleaming chrome bumpers, and especially the 15-inch optional Rally wheels. The 1970s should have just been known as "Black Vinyl," because that's what the best records came on, and the most durable interiors were made of it. The seats, doors, and headliner don't look like they are celebrating 45 years on this earth. The inside really highlights the practicality of this classic coupe. Lots of legroom, and two bench seats mean this actually can seat six comfortably, and there are seatbelts for all. Plus, the power steering and power brakes (discs up front) mean you won't get worn-out taking the whole family on an extended Saturday cruise. But don't be fooled by its domestic appearance. The full set of Sun Pro gauges under the dash are a nice clue to some hijinks available under the hood (these dials for oil, voltage, and temperature also provide vital info too!) This Nova has the highly desirable 350 cubic-inch V8 mated to a three-speed automatic transmission. This is the correct spec engine size, but this coupe benefits from a younger motor under the hood. It also has been updated with a cool set of valve covers, and matching air cleaner with aggressive red lettering on matte black. In fact, that's the point of a car like this. The 350 small block is not only a motor with great power from the factory, but also it's so well supported in the aftermarket community that there are plenty of affordable parts to get as wild as you like. You can buy this Nova today, and it's turnkey ready to go cruising with a mean-sounding V8 and dual exhaust. But at this affordable price, you will have the option and finances to continue to transform this coupe into your dream tire-smoking coupe/muscle/pro-street machine in the future. This Nova has the cool muscle car look mixed with practical features and an affordable price. It's the coupe you buy now, enjoy it, and it should only get better for tomorrow. This is a 1972 Nova 355CI small block Chevy automatic with a 700R overdrive transmission, SS TRIBUTE ACCENTS (not a real SS), ICE COLD Vintage air conditioning, beautiful paint and body with a vinyl top. The paint and body are really nice as is all chrome and bright work, bumpers, upholstery, tinted windows, and cd player with 4 6x9's across the back deck powered by an amp. Enjoy the luxury of its plush tweed interior (TINY hole on driver's seat, nothing major), This car was built to be versatile you can drive it anywhere and it seats up to 6 people with seat belts simply by removing the bench console. Other nice features of this car are its power, drivability and sound. People will definitely take notice of its healthy sounding small block as you roll into the parking lot. Open the hood and display a very clean, chromed, detailed and easy to work on V8 with all the traditional performance products. This car is nicely detailed, clean, comfortable and ready to cruise to your local car show and enjoy! CLEAN TITLE IN MY HAND.Below is a brief list of highlights on the vehicle: 355CI small block Chevy engine Aluminum intake Mother Thumper cam Headers Heavy duty radiator Holley 750 carburetor Electronic HEI distributor Close ratio steering box 700R overdrive transmission 3:08 gears Dual Flow master exhaust Custom tweed interior Ice cold Vintage air conditioning Seats 6 with seatbelts B&M shifter Radio/CD player with 4 6x9's and an amp Cowl hood *****TIRES ARE NOW ALL NEW BLACK WALLS.....NOT WHITE WALLS LIKE I HAVE IN THE PICTURES***** Tinted windows Paint is less than two years old, and looks good Vinyl top is two years old, and looks good Chrome trim & bright work all in good condition ******SS ACCENTS***** Trunk with spare & jack There is a quarter inch crack in the front windshield towards the top of the driver's side but not in the line of sight The front A-Arm bushings on both sides are going to need to be replaced This Nova is a really nice car. It has lots of features that an original 1972 Nova did not have. It is not a trailer queen, but it is a really clean car that you can get in and drive anywhere you want. This 1964 Chevrolet Chevy II has purposely been built to look like budget survivor and drive like a thoroughbred muscle car. The trick to building an effective street machine is to keep it low-key. Ermine White is the perfect shade of everyday transport, and of course, also a color shared with the Corvette... and that's exactly how to view this coupe. It could be a wolf in sheep's clothing. The sheetmetal is quite straight, and if you're looking to suprise, the two-door sedan is the body style you want, with its extra rigidity and lighter weight. No modifications to the body were permitted, not even a cowl-induction hood, and they even resisted the urge to add the extra chrome of the upper-level Novas. Instead, this is the classic that you sit back at the car shows and watch as the real enthusiasts take notice of how secretly special this one really is. Possibly the only real exterior indication they will pick up on are the 15-inch rally wheels borrowed from an early Camaro. The interior offers a few more hints at this Chevy's upgraded side. The blue vinyl bench seat is original equipment, and works well with the low-profile mission. It's part of a new interior package that includes the door panels, headliner, package tray, visors, seat covers, kick panels, and arm rests. Of course anyone looking that closely at this pristine interior will notice the big B&M shifter. From there, bow-tie fans will recognize the three-spoke Grant sport steering wheel. But what will really get them talking is the new gauge package that fits so well in the original slots, and yet stands out as the perfect custom piece. It includes large AutoMeter readouts for the speedometer and tachometer, as well as pods for the oil, water, and battery neatly incorporated in the radio slot. Once you pop the hood, this Chevy II can no longer pretend it's anything but a nice custom upgraded build. Sure the V8 was an option in '64, but the 350 cubic-inch small-block didn't come along until later SS coupes. The crate motor in this one has less than 3,500 miles on it, and when it was built in 2009, there were plenty of performance goodies added. This includes a Weiand X-Celerator intake, Edelbrock Thunder AVS 650 CFM carburetor, Comp Cams high energy camshaft, Proform 14-inch electric fan, aluminum radiator, and Hooker Pro Competition long tube ceramic headers. This exits through a custom dual exhaust with performance H-pipe for that perfect muscle car sound that will keep people guessing if that rumble is really coming from the incognito coupe. The power is sent to a stout three-speed TH350 automatic transmission with a PRC cooler and TCI slotted pan. The power then gets to the ground via a 10-bolt Positraction rear end running a 3.23 ratio. This one is an all-around driver with a full custom suspension, including new disc brakes up front. There's so much going on under the skin on this custom build that we don't have the room to list it all here. But give us a call, and we'll be happy to share all the details of the best coupe you never saw coming.
