For 2014 the Corvette is all-new, with the most powerful standard engine ever offered. Now called the Corvette Stingray, the new for 2014 seventh-generation Corvette is a lighter and stiffer two-seat sports car available initially as a targa-roof coupe and later as a convertible. The coupe and convertible include a new 450-hp LT1 6.2-liter direct-injection V8 engine with Active Fuel Management and variable valve timing. It is matched with an all-new seven-speed manual transmission with automatic rev matching. A six-speed automatic with steering wheel paddle shifters is available. Both transmissions include launch control. An optional dual-mode exhaust adds 6-horsepower. All-new for 2014, the completely redesigned sportscar infuses a healthy dose of European flair into classic American muscle. While some die-hard 'Vette fans may grumble, the new car's lines, evocative of Italian exotics, might very well attract a wider audience that's younger and globally more diverse. Chevrolet is so proud of its creation they've dubbed it the Stingray, a name executives say is historically reserved for the most significant Corvette models. And, like its predecessors, the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray offers the biggest bang for the buck when it comes to power. Codenamed C7, the seventh-generation Corvette shares only two parts with the previous-generation model: the interior cabin filter and the rear latch for the removable roof panel. Coupes get a standard carbon-fiber roof, while convertibles get a full-power retractable top. Both body styles are built in GM's plant in Bowling Green, Kentucky. The 2014 Corvette is the most powerful standard production Corvette to date, courtesy of an all-new LT1 6.2-liter small block V8 good for 455 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque. An optional dual-mode exhaust ekes out an extra five horses and five pound-feet of torque. Although the power gain over the outgoing model is moderate, the C7's additional 36 pound-feet of torque helps to keep ample low-end thrust on tap. Five drive modes from Eco to Track change the balance between economy and performance by tweaking twelve elements, including steering, suspension and throttle mapping. Like all of GM's performance cars, the Stingray was tested extensively on the track during the development. The result is a 50/50 weight balance and improvements in handling. Entry-level Corvettes in the past have been notoriously skimpy on luxury, especially in the cabin. This time around, the interior has been significantly improved with better finish and materials including aluminum trim (carbon fiber is optional), and standard dual, high-resolution information screens that are reconfigurable. Seats are built using an underlying structure of lightweight magnesium and come in two variants: A more comfort-oriented touring option and a sport seat with more supportive side bolstering. When it comes to specs alone, the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette doesn't have any apples-to-apples competitors. Coupe fans looking for high performance in a more practical package might consider the 580-hp Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 (with the same engine as the C6 Corvette ZR1), Dodge Challenger SRT8 or Ford Shelby GT500. None of these, however, can hold a candle to the Corvette's eye-catching design. Those seeking performance with European refinement and luxury could consider the Porsche Cayman, BMW Z4 or BMW M3, but these are underpowered and overpriced in comparison, making the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray the best performance value for the money. Source: New Car Test Drive Walkaround In shadowy silhouette, the shape of the C7 still looks very much like a Corvette. Throw the lights on, however, and it's clear the 2014 Stingray is a new breed of beast. While the footprint doesn't differ much from the outgoing C6, the Stingray is slightly longer, lower and narrower. Designers say they used both the stingray (of the aquatic variety) and fighter jets as inspiration. European styling cues appear borrowed from Ferraris and other uber-expensive performance cars. In fact, from the cabin, a glance of the sharp side crease in the side-view mirrors could make one think for a moment that he or she is riding in a Lamborghini. Lines overall are more aggressive an angular, replacing the softer curves of the previous model. Up front, a more prominent grille is trimmed with mesh and chromework. Headlamps are longer, reshaped and farther swept back, with a row of L-shaped LED daytime running lamps. Narrow side reflectors now arc alongside the front fender. The hood is more extensively creased, not only to give the Stingray a more powerful look, but to be more aerodynamic. A power bulge houses a functional vent. The carbon fiber hood on coupes is lighter, helping the C7 achieve a lower center of gravity. Its light weight also makes it easier to remove. A translucent plastic roof is available as an option, but we found it uncomfortable to be constantly accosted by the glaring midday sun, so we don't recommend this option. Convertibles get a power-operated top. Side lines are more sharply creased, with the stingray badge sitting just behind the front side vents. Sideview mirrors are more rectangular than before. Standard wheels are 18-inch aluminums in front and 19s in the rear; or 19s and 20s, respectively, with the Z51 performance package. Although the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette in many ways evokes images of European sportscars, the Stingray hasn't completely abandoned its American heritage. This is most noticeable in the rear, with the squarish, Camaro-esque taillights. Bold, center quad exhaust pipes are shiny trumpet-like bells, making the Corvette look as if it had swallowed, then attempted to expel, a mariachi band. Source: New Car Test Drive Driving Impression The powertrain of the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette really shines. An all-new LT1 6.2-liter small block V8 cranks out 455 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque (and 460 hp/465 lb.-ft. with an optional dual-mode exhaust). Acceleration is fast and smooth. Maximum torque is still reached at 4600 rpm, but 36 more pound-feet help to keep plenty of low-end thrust on tap. Combined with a relatively light curb weight of 3,298 pounds for the coupe and 3,362 pounds for the convertible, fuel economy is an EPA-estimated 17/29 mpg City/Highway with the 7-speed manual. Five basic driving modes tweak 12 different inputs, including steering, throttle mapping, traction and stability control, exhaust, suspension and more; the Z51's electronic limited-slip differential is also adjusted, as is magnetic ride control on cars so equipped. With the turn of a knob in the center console, drivers can choose between Weather, Eco, Tour, Sport and Track, the latter of which has multiple sub-settings. Tour mode is default, and offers a good balance of comfort and sportiness. As would be expected, Eco mode offers the best fuel economy, while Sport is best for enthusiastic road driving. One complaint we have about the drive selector is that the traction control on/off switch sits right in the center of the dial, which caused us to accidentally turn off the traction control a few times while searching for our desired mode. We also found it strange that traction control could be turned off in any mode, which didn't make much sense to us when using more conservative settings like Weather and Eco. In the handling department, the Corvette is agile and easy to toss around, benefits of its light weight, trim proportions and refined suspension. Our drive route took us over some bumpy roads, including those covered in dirt and gravel. Although we kicked up a lot of dust, the uneven, slippery terrain never upset the car, even when driving assertively in Sport mode. A smaller steering wheel helps to make the car feel more maneuverable, aided by a smaller turning circle that's nearly two feet less than the C6. We found the steering overall to be sharper, more refined and more precise. In a car with the 7-speed manual transmission, we turned on the rev matching function. Different from some cars, the rev match in the Stingray kicks in when you take the gear out of the gate, instead of waiting until the shifter is fully in the next gear. While this does allow the engine to match faster, we found it took a little getting used to, and learned it was best to throw the car into gear as quickly as possible to maximize smoothness, as opposed to leisurely slipping it from gear to neutral to gear. Shifts with the 6-speed automatic transmission weren't as satisfying as with the manual. Even though you can shift via the steering-wheel-mounted paddles, the transmission is still a traditional automatic, which means you won't get the lightning-fast shifts of dual-clutch gearboxes. Still, the auto remains the best choice for those who don't want to row through gears around town and in traffic. Braking is crisp and confident thanks to big power-assisted discs with four-piston calipers on both fronts and rears. Larger, slotted rotors with the Z51 pack help the Stingray stop from 60-0 mph in just 107 feet. The standard Michelin Pilot Super Sport run-flat tires were created especially for the C7 Stingray, and have asymmetrical sidewalls like those found on racecars. They're plenty sticky, and we brought our test car back from the rough country roads peppered with gravel. Softer tires typically equate to a shorter lifespan, but these offer incredible grip plus a tread wear rating of 300, which means they shouldn't wear out after only a few months. What's more, anyone who's ever taken off at a green light in a Corvette with cold tires knows it's a recipe for wheel spin. A new tire temperature system in the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette uses a sophisticated algorithm that determines tire temperature and modulates traction control accordingly to maximize grip in every temperature and driving situation. We were a bit disappointed that the Corvette's throaty exhaust wasn't as loud as we would have liked, even in Sport mode. While it does give a satisfying roar when you really open it up, the exhaust note is relatively tame otherwise. After our street drive, we tested the Stingray on a large autocross course and played with Track mode and its sub-sets that go in order from more conservative to more aggressive: Wet, Dry, Track 1, Track 2. Here the Corvette Stingray really showed its improvement in chassis, suspension, steering and handling. With the Stingray's predecessors, it felt like you had to really throw the car into the corner. Now it glides in with much more panache. All of the models we've driven have been fitted with the Z51 Performance Package and Magnetic Ride Control with Performance Traction Management. We would like to drive a Stingray without any options to see how it compared. Once we had the hang of the course, our driving instructor encouraged us to floor it coming out of the apexes; something we wouldn't typically do unless we wanted to take out a bunch of cones at the track-out. But we trustingly followed his advice and, sure enough, the car wouldn't give us any more power than was necessary to power out cleanly. In other words: The 2014 Corvette Stingray, when fitted with all the bells and whistles, makes you seem like a much better driver than you actually are. We felt pretty confident about our abilities until our instructor swapped seats and took the wheel, switching off all driver aids. He took off twice as fast, effortlessly drifting around every corner and making the cones feel much wider than when we were in the driver's seat. While the Corvette Stingray indeed kept some of its raw, rowdy edge, there was a new sense of refinement, as if the brawny American had spent a year abroad at a European finishing school. Source: New Car Test Drive Interior The cabin was historically the Corvette's biggest weakness. While previous generations had an interior that was functional, materials, switches and displays had a decidedly parts-bin look. Not so with the Stingray. Chevrolet knows the new Corvette couldn't succeed based on exterior looks and powertrain alone, and interior designers did a fine job raising the bar with soft-touch materials, higher-end controls and better seats. However, the Corvette still uses extensive bonding material throughout the car, and that fresh-glue smell typical of past Corvettes is still undeniably present when one opens the door. Immediately it's clear the cabin of the 2014 Corvette Stingray is driver-oriented. Instruments are slightly canted to the left, and the optional carbon fiber trim on our test car graced only the driver's side of the instrument panel. A digital display takes the place of traditional gauges, and changes depending on the drive mode selected. Eco, Weather and Tour modes display trip data, audio and navigation; Sport mode shows a classic analog-like gauge setup, and Track mode shows a competition-focused hockey stick design with lap timer based on the Corvette Racing C6.R racecar. The passenger, meanwhile, gets a handle on each side to hold on to: One on the door, and another on the right side of the center console. Unlike most vehicles that place controls for both sides of the dual-zone automatic climate control in the center, the passenger's temperature control is located in the far right vent. This allows the passenger to easily control his or her ideal temp without encroaching on what is clearly meant to be the driver's territory in the center stack. Like Corvettes of the past, the 2014 Corvette Stingray cockpit sits low, nestling driver and passenger deep inside and close to the road. The center console and shifter sit high compared to driver and passenger. All-new seats are made with a magnesium frame, which makes them strong yet light. Two types of seats are available. The standard touring seat is comfortable and bolstered; an optional sport seat with more aggressive bolstering and cutouts for three-point harnesses will be available later in 2013. Seats adjust four ways and offer a reasonable range of adjustment, but this isn't a road trip car. After a few hours on a test drive, we were sore and numb and needed a good stretch. Leather upholstery is standard, and the optional LT3 package upgrades to buttery, premium Nappa leather with a leather-wrapped dash and door trim. The steering wheel in the 2014 Corvette Stingray is the smallest that Chevrolet has ever made, and we like it. It's easy to grip and turn, and makes the car feel easy to maneuver. All cars, regardless of the transmission, come with steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters. We found this odd at first in our test car with the manual transmission. When equipped with the seven-speed manual, the paddles allow the driver to turn the rev matching function on and off. Although we like having the ability to control whether the car will match our revs, we're guessing that Chevrolet fitted every car with the same steering wheel for cost efficiency; the rev matching controls on the manual cars were a creative solution for a wheel with what otherwise would have been extraneous parts. All models come with a display screen in the center stack, although functions are pretty bare bones in the base model. Navigation is much improved from previous versions of the Corvette (which in the past looked like they could have been running Windows 95), although the map display is not as detailed as we would have liked. Readily available storage space is scarce in the 2014 Corvette Stingray. A tiny tray ahead of the gear shifter is not quite large enough for a phone. One must instead use a cupholder, or tuck in away inside the center console. Door pockets are narrow and relatively shallow; we were able to cram a standard-sized bottled water in sideways, but had great difficulty retrieving it. There is little space for bags or purses; we had to put our gear in the trunk, where it slid around like mad during our test drive. There is additional storage for cell phones, wallets and other small items behind the center stack's display screen, but it's not good for quick access. On the plus side, the hidden compartment locks via a security code, making for a safe place to keep valuables while the car is parked. Although other dimensions of the 2014 Corvette have remained the same or slightly increased, cargo space is even more scant. Coupes offer only 15 cubic feet, and the convertible a paltry 10 cubes with the top up. Typical of other corvettes, the trunk area is wide but shallow, limiting the types of luggage one can carry. Value isn't the first thing that comes to mind when talk turns to the Chevrolet Corvette, but the Corvette is one of the best bangs for the buck when it comes to high performance. For the price of a midsize luxury sedan, the Corvette delivers supercar performance. It's easy to drive on a daily basis, and maintenance costs are not exotic. 2008 brings an all-new V8 engine for the Corvette Coupe and Convertible. The new LS3 V8 is larger, at 6.2 liters versus the previous 6.0-liter LS2 engine. Output is now 430 horsepower, an increase of 30. An optional dual-mode exhaust system raises horsepower to 436. Indeed, the 2008 Corvette can lap a racing circuit nearly as quickly as the previous-generation Z06, a legendary car. The new LS3 engine rumbles wonderfully, and the acceleration it produces is intoxicating. We love the standard Coupe, with either the manual or Paddle Shift automatic. It quickly infuses a driver with confidence. Its brakes are fantastic. And, it's blazingly fast. The six-speed automatic transmission works great and lives up to the advanced technology in the rest of the car; it can be shifted manually with levers on the steering column. And the convertible is plain wonderful. Drop the top on a nice day, pop in your favorite CD, and you might have what psychologists call a peak experience, a moment where you revel in being alive. It's a fantastic feeling, and at those moments the Corvette more than justifies its price. The aural sounds of the burbling V8, the body-colored trim that surrounds the cabin, the feel of power beneath, it's automotive heaven. The Corvette can be a reasonably comfortable daily driver in most locales, for at least three of the four seasons. The latest-generation Corvette is not a crude car, and its performance does not exact a painful toll on driver or passenger. It gets an EPA-rated 26 mpg Highway, better than most SUVs. The Corvette Z06 is a true supercar for a price that's merely expensive, as opposed to insanely expensive. The Z06 gets the 505-hp LS7 V8, a lightweight chassis, and upgraded brakes. If any $70,000 car can be called a bargain, this is the one, at least in terms of raw performance. The Corvette Z06 accelerates faster, grips better and stops shorter than European sports cars that cost twice as much. And we find it easier to drive than a Viper. It takes an expensive machine to compete with a Z06. For 2008, Chevrolet Corvette gets more standard features, including OnStar tele-aid service, XM Satellite Radio, an auxiliary audio input jack, and auto-dimming mirrors. The 2008 Chevrolet Corvettes look the same as the 2007s, in spite of their bigger engines. The Corvette is low and sleek. From some angles it's almost pretty, and it shows a bit of Italian flair. Throughout the car, functional elements dictate design and the result is a forward motion that implies performance. The lines of the bulging hood, the shape of the fenders, and the cat's eye headlights all point forward to a subtle beaklike shape. A pair of fog lights flank a wide air intake below. Vents behind the front tires let hot air out of the engine compartment. The sculpted fenders, sharp creases that sweep dramatically up to the planed rear deck, call to mind race cars as well as jet fighters. At the back, four round taillights recall Corvette's past and make the car look like an F-18 taking off in full afterburner mode. On the functional side, the optics of the reverse lights magnifies the light they throw out to help when backing up in this beast. To move weight from the front of the Corvette, the transmission is mounted behind the seats and connected to the differential, rather than being attached directly behind the engine. In the Z06, this quest for front-rear balance extends to the weight of the battery, which is relocated in the rear cargo area. The Z06 is distinguished from other Corvettes by lots of subtle appearance tweaks, starting with the roof. It's fixed rather than removable, adding an extra element of structural stiffness for track driving. You'll never see a transparent roof panel on a Z06. In front, the Z06 has a wider, lower grille and a separate, unique air scoop above the bumper to shove more intake air under the hood. Its fenders are wider front and rear to cover massively wide tires and rims (the rear wheels are fully 12 inches wide or two inches wider than those on the standard Vette). In back, brake scoops are located in front of the rear wheels, the Z06 spoiler is slightly more prominent, and its exhaust outlets are wider, too (four inches in diameter at the tips). Several Z06 body and chassis changes are not visible. The frame is made entirely of hydro-formed aluminum (the standard Vettes have steel rails), with a magnesium engine cradle, and its fenders are formed from ultra-light carbon fiber. As a result, and despite a much heavier engine and drivetrain, the Z06 weighs 50 pounds less than a standard Corvette coupe. The LS3 V8 engine sounds great, and its low, throaty roar is accompanied by thrilling acceleration. Stand on the gas and even the automatic will chirp the rear tires when it shifts into second. The LS3 V8 has been updated for 2008 from last year's LS2. It now displaces 6.2 liters (376 cubic inches) and generates 430 horsepower and 424 pound-feet of torque. To put this in perspective, that's 25 hp more than the previous-generation Z06 engine. The Corvette can accelerate from 0-60 mph in 4.2 seconds and cover the standing quarter-mile in 12.5 seconds. That's quicker than a Porsche 911 Carrera or Jaguar XK8 and comparable to a Ferrari F430. There's lots of torque at all engine speeds, and throttle response is even more willing for 2008. Stand on the gas and the Vette goes. The 2008 Corvette can lap a racing circuit nearly as quickly as the old Z06, and it boasts a top speed of 190 mph. We haven't experienced 190 mph, but on a tight racing circuit we found the current Corvette much easier to drive than older models. Today's Corvette is easier to drive hard in the turns, braking hard, then powering out under hard acceleration. The Corvette is happy cruising around, as well. It gets an EPA-rated 16/26 mpg City/Highway with the manual, 15/25 mpg with the automatic. The six-speed automatic and six-speed manual are each appealing in their own right, so choosing between them comes down to priorities and personal preference. We're here to tell you the manual is a viable option as a daily driver. It shifts easily and the clutch is easy to operate smoothly. For fuel economy purposes, Chevrolet includes a mechanism that forces you to shift from first to fourth gear when accelerating slowly. We find this annoying, but adjusted to it. This fuel-economy strategy can be avoided by revving higher and waiting longer to shift. Fifth and sixth gears are both overdrives, again to improve fuel efficiency. Shifting through the gears is a lot of fun and it's easy to brake and downshift using the heel-and-toe method when approaching a corner (actually by braking with the ball of the foot and blipping the throttle with the right side of the foot). In short, it's a modern, easy-to-operate manual; we'd own one. The automatic is best for commuting in stop-and-go traffic, and it gives up little to the manual in performance. The Paddle Shift automatic offers manual shifting via steering-wheel levers and an electronic controller with more computing power than the typical PC had 10 years ago. The relatively close ratios offer good performance and smoothness by allowing the engine to run at optimal rpm more often. First gear has a high ratio, delivering impressive acceleration off the line. Yet both fifth and sixth are overdrive gears, allowing quiet cruising and good highway mileage. If ever a sporting car were suited for an automatic transmission, it's the Corvette, with its big, torquey V8. The automatic does not sap all the fun out of driving the way automatics do in small sports cars with small engines. It's responsive to the driver's intent, shifting hard and fast when you're getting with the program, but shifting smooth and soft when cruising. In the handling department, the Corvette is agile and easy to toss around, benefits of its light weight, trim proportions and refined suspension. The coupe weighs a trim 3,217 pounds. Three suspensions are available. We liked the standard suspension and would not hesitate to order a Corvette so equipped. Ride quality of the C6 is firm but quite pleasant, not harsh. It offers great handling, even on a racing circuit. There's almost no body lean when cornering hard. In short, the cheapest, most basic Corvette is a great car. The Z51 package makes the Corvette even more fun on a race track. Z51 is a substantial upgrade that includes special brakes, shocks, springs, anti-r. Source: NewCarTestDrive.ComInteriorThe Corvette cabin features premium soft surfaces, nice grain in the materials and elegant tailoring. The dashboard is finished in a soft material that feels rich to the touch. Real metal accents are used, but they don't generate glare. The electronics displays serve the driver without getting in the way. The steering wheel is relatively small, measuring just 9.4 inches in diameter. It feels good in the hands, and it affords a good view of the instruments. The seats are comfortable and fairly easy to adjust, though moving the manually operated backrest forward is a problem because your weight is invariably resting on it when you want to adjust it. Sitting in the Corvette evokes that feeling of sitting deep down in a massive machine. There's plenty of headroom and the windshield doesn't seem too close to the driver's face. Hefty side bolstering on the optional sport seats, even more so with those in the Z06, makes it more difficult to slide in, but the bolsters squeeze around the thighs and torso and hold the driver like Velcro. For 2008, the Corvette is available with a special two-tone leather package that adds leather upholstery to the top of the instrument panel, upper door panels, and console cover. The effect is a more elegant, higher end look than the Corvette has had in the past. The instruments are big analog gauges, easy to read at a glance. The Z06 gets a unique cluster with more gauges. The Corvette is, thankfully, devoid of a lot of digital readouts. One exception is the head-up display, which projects speed, rpm and even g-forces onto the windshield, a handy and entertaining feature. The upgrade Bose stereo system includes redundant controls on the steering wheel hub for most functions. Cubby storage is decent. The glovebox is roomy, and in the coupe, there is 22.0 cubic feet of storage space under the glass behind the rear seats. That's more than the trunk space in a sedan, with plenty of room for golf bags. You need to be careful when loading to avoid scratching the bodywork, however, and the liftover height is high; this is not a sedan or everyday hatchback. There's no need to take the key out of your pocket to unlock the Corvette or start its engine. Simply walk up and pull the door handle. With the keyless start feature, sensors detect your key and unlock the door. Climb in, buckle up, and press the starter button. We're not sold on the benefits of keyless starting, but it can be convenient. The convertible's five-layer fabric top is available in four colors, and it offers power operation. The power top operates with a single-button control and completes its cycle in 18 seconds. An easy-to-operate manual top is standard. The convertible looks good with the top up, and it looks terrific with the top down, with body-color trim that gives it the racy appearance of an open-cockpit Le Mans prototype. The convertible gives up some cargo capacity. It offers 11 cubic feet of storage with the top up, which isn't bad for a roadster, and 7.5 cubic feet with the top down. The 2006 Corvette could be a reasonably comfortable daily driver in most locales, for at least three of the four seasons. Known to sports car enthusiasts as the C6 (for sixth generation), the current-generation Corvette was all-new for model year 2005. It's much better than the C5 it replaced, which was a solid sports car in its own right. What makes the C6 better is everything: performance, refinement, ease of operation. It's more comfortable and easier to drive, not only on the road, but also on a race track. It quickly infuses the driver with confidence. It feels like it has more grip than the C5, and it does. It's more agile than before yet more stable. Its new brakes are excellent and, yes, it's faster. If you believe the best time to buy a car is in its second year of production, then the 2006 Corvette is the one to buy. The standard Corvette coupe and convertible are powered by Chevy's 6.0-liter LS2 V8. This engine sounds great and intoxicates with its acceleration. New for 2006 is an optional six-speed Paddle Shift automatic transmission. With either the manual or automatic, the coupe is awesome, and the convertible is really wonderful. It's less overtly aggressive, perhaps prettier (dare we say more Italian?) than previous Corvettes. The exposed headlights usually draw the first comments. Since the early 1960s, Corvettes used hideaway headlamps to complement their sleek designs, but advances in optics and lighting technology now enable designers to achieve those goals with exposed headlights. From an engineering standpoint, the new headlamps are better than the old hideaways: They are lighter, which means less weight hanging out over the front wheels, a critical area in terms of overhang, polar moments of inertia and all that engineering stuff that does affect handling. Trimming weight in front is always difficult in a high performance front-engine car, so this is an important reduction. The new lights also eliminate a lot of mechanical complexity and allow a higher-quality lighting setup. On top of all that, they offer better performance: Chevrolet says lighting is improved 85 percent. So the exposed headlights are good thing. More important than the headlamps, however, are the Corvette's smaller proportions. The C6 is fully 5 inches shorter than the C5 (3 inches shorter in front, 2 inches shorter in the rear), and the standard models are one inch narrower. Smaller size and lighter weight improve agility. The C6 also cuts a tighter profile, and it does all that without eliminating usable interior space. In addition to the handling benefits, the more diminutive dimensions make the Corvette more appealing on the tighter roads found in other parts of the world, particularly Europe. The C6 body work is smoother aerodynamically and generates less lift in front than the C5, which results in better grip and increased stability at high speeds. The sculpted fenders, sharp creases that sweep dramatically up to the planed rear deck and other aspects of the design call to mind race cars as well as jet fighters. The narrower rear end is the biggest improvement from a styling standpoint, offering more pleasing proportions. The four jeweled taillights make the new Corvette look like an F18 taking off in full afterburner mode. The optics of the reverse lights magnify the light they throw out, helpful when backing up in this beast. The headlights are only one part of Chevrolet's efforts to trim weight from the front of the Corvette. Rather than being attached directly behind the engine, the transmission is mounted behind the seats and connected to the differential. In the Z06, this quest for front-rear balance extends to the weight of the battery, which is relocated from under the hood to the rear cargo area. The Z06 is distinguished from other 2006 Corvettes by lots of subtle appearance tweaks, starting with the roof. The Z06 roof is fixed rather than removable, to add an extra element of structural stiffness for track driving. So you'll never see a transparent plastic roof panel on a Z06. In front, the Z06 has a wider, lower grille and a separate, unique air scoop above the bumper to shove more intake air under the hood. Its fenders are wider front and rear to cover massively wide tires and rims (the rear wheels are fully 12 inches wide, or two inches wider than those on the standard Vette). In back, the Z06 spoiler is slightly more prominent, and its exhaust outlets are wider, too (four inches in diameter at the tips). There are also several Z06 body and chassis changes that aren't apparent to the eye. The Z06 frame is made entirely of hydro-formed aluminum (the standard Vettes have steel rails), with a magnesium engine cradle, and its fenders are formed from ultra-light carbon fiber. As a result, and despite a much heavier engine and drivetrain, the Z06 weighs 50 pounds less than a standard Corvette coupe. Source: NewCarTestDrive.ComDriving ImpressionThe Corvette coupe and Convertible get something significantly new for 2006: An optional automatic transmission as advanced as some of the other high-tech components introduced with the C6. Indeed, the new six-speed Paddle Shift automatic is one of the most technologically advanced transmissions in the industry, featuring clutch to clutch operation, manual shifting via steering-wheel levers and an electronic controller with more computing power than the typical PC had 10 years ago. The automatic's six forward gears have smaller steps between them, which enhances the feeling of performance and smoothness and allows the engine to run at optimal rpm more often. First gear has a much higher ratio than that in the old four-speed automatic, delivering even more impressive acceleration off the line. Yet both fifth and sixth are overdrive gears, allowing quiet cruising and good highway mileage. In short, the six-speed automatic delivers an even better balance of exciting acceleration and good mileage. If ever a sporting car were suited for an automatic transmission, it's the Corvette, with its big, torquey V8. The automatic does not sap all the fun out of driving the Vette the way automatics do in small sports cars with small engines. It's responsive to the driver's intent, shifting hard and fast when you're getting with the program, but smooth and softly when cruising. The six-speed automatic would be news enough for a given model year, but for enthusiast drivers it pales in comparison to the big event for 2006: the return of the mighty Corvette Z06 after a one-year hiatus. The Z06 is the most powerful production Corvette ever, boasting 505 horsepower. Its new LS7 V8 displaces 7.0 liters, or 427 cubic inches, just like the famous 427 Vettes of the late '60s. Yet the original 427s were big-block engines. While the LS7 generates big block torque (470 pound-feet), it's actually a small block V8, so it's lighter and much more compact than the original 427s. However, it's still an overhead-valve engine, and in certain respects it has more in common with a heavy-duty Silverado pickup than a Ferrari. Yet the LS7 is impressively tuned and highly refined. The Z06 features a host of racing technologies that enhance durability, including dry sump engine lubrication and separate cooling systems for the oil, power steering, rear axle and six-speed manual transmission. The springs and shocks in the Z06 suspension are about 15 percent stiffer than those with the optional Z51 performance suspension for the standard Corvette. The cross-drilled brake rotors are larger, with high-performance six-piston calipers in front and four-piston calipers in the rear. The Z06 has a fixed roof, rather than a removable panel like the standard coupe, for a bit more overall structural stiffness. Its frame is made entirely of lightweight aluminum and magnesium, rather than high-strength steel, and its fenders are lightweight carbon fiber rather than fiberglass. As a result, the Z06 is substantially lighter than the standard Corvette coupe, even though its engine, transmission and other super high-performance components are substantially heavier. Bottom line? At $65,800, the 2006 Corvette Z06 is easily the best supercar value in high-performance automotive history: 0-60 mph in 3.7 seconds, 11.7-second quarter mile, 200-mph top speed and 1.04 g constant lateral grip, according to Chevrolet. Those numbers surpass the Porsche 911 Turbo and Ferrari F430, cars that cost twice as much as the Z06 during clearance sales, and all but a handful of low-volume, $500,000-plus specials built in small workshops around the world. And here's the real stunner. The Z06 does all that with nothing more than a slightly stiff ride on really bad roads when driven around town. There's nothing finicky in this monster. With impressive EPA mileage numbers of 16 mpg city and 24 highway, the Z06 doesn't even get a gas-guzzler tax. Th. Source: NewCarTestDrive.ComInteriorInside the 2006 Corvette is a relatively small steering wheel, measuring just 9.4 inches in diameter, and it addresses one of the biggest gripes we had with the 2005 model. The new wheel looks less like something that belongs in a Suburban and more like one that belongs in a sports car, even a Ferrari. Yet it still feels good in the hands, and it affords a good view of the instruments. There's no need to take the key out of your pocket to unlock the Corvette or start its engine. Simply walk up and pull the door handle. Sensors detect your key and unlock the door. Climb in, buckle up, and press the starter button. The cockpit in this sixth-generation car is much improved over past Corvettes. It no longer looks like an upgraded Camaro inside. The two-tone leather treatment no longer makes us feel that a black leather jacket is required attire. The cabin features premium soft surfaces, nice grain in the materials and elegant tailoring. The dashboard is finished in a soft material that feels rich to the touch. Real metal accents are used, but they don't generate glare. The electronics displays serve the driver without getting in the way, and they no longer resemble something from a movie-prop space ship. The seats are comfortable and easier to adjust than those in past Corvettes. Sitting in the Corvette still evokes that feeling of sitting deep down in a massive machine, but there's more headroom than ever, and the windshield doesn't seem as close to the driver's face. Hefty side bolstering on the optional sport seats, even more so with those in the Z06, makes it more difficult to slide in, but the bolsters squeeze around the thighs and torso and hold the driver like Velcro. The instruments are big analog gauges that are easy to read at a glance. The Z06 gets a unique cluster with more gauges. The Corvette is, thankfully, devoid of a lot of digital readouts. One exception is the head-up display, which projects speed, rpm and even g-forces onto the windshield, a handy and entertaining feature. The Convertible's five-layer fabric top is available in four colors, and it features an option not offered in a Corvette since 1962: power operation. The power top operates with a single-button control and completes its cycle in 18 seconds. An easy-to-operate manual top is standard. The Convertible looks good with the top up, and it looks terrific with the top down, with body-color trim that gives it the racy appearance of an open-cockpit Le Mans prototype. Naturally, the convertible gives up some cargo capacity. It offers 10.5 cubic feet of storage with the top up, which isn't bad for a roadster, and just 5.1 with the top down.
