This recipient of a 2014 $30,000 restoration is the truly classic American collector’s find! Finished in it’s correct Artesian blue paint job shows extremely well with only minor imperfections visible upon close inspection. Inside, the white vinyl seats all look great with no major signs of wear visible. The door panels are finished to match the seats and dashboard are matched to mirror the exterior of the car and all look fantastic. Paint and body are displayed well with minimal paint issues and no visible evidence of repair or damage that we could find. The Chevrolet Corvair is a compact automobile manufactured and marketed by Chevrolet for model year 1960–1969 over two generations. As the only American-designed, mass produced passenger car to feature a rear mounted air-cooled engine, the Corvair range included a two-door coupe, convertible, four-door sedan, and four-door station wagon body styles, as well as passenger van, commercial van, and pickup truck variants. The Corvair competed with imported cars such as the original Volkswagen Beetle, as well as the Falcon, Plymouth, Studebaker Lark and the Rambler American. New refinements appeared on the 1965 redesign. The Corsa came standard with an instrument panel featuring a 140 mph speedometer with resettable trip odometer, a 6,000 rpm tachometer (slightly off on rpms), cylinder head temperature gauge, analog clock with a sweeping second hand, a manifold vacuum/pressure gauge and fuel gauge. A much better heater system, larger brakes borrowed from the Chevelle, a stronger differential ring gear, a Delcotron alternator (replacing the generator), and significant chassis refinements were made. AM/FM stereo radio, in-dash All Weather Air Conditioning, telescopically adjustable steering column, and a Special Purpose Chassis Equipment (“Z17”) handling package, consisting of a special performance suspension and quick ratio steering box, were significant new options for 1965. The body is straight but does have some bubbling of the paint in the lower front fenders ... This car has been custom painted and then signed by many automotive greats of our time! We went straight to the source and spoke to Pete of Autorama about this very special Corvair Lakewood. The previous owner of this handsome wagon owned the car for over 30 years and always kept it garaged. It benefitted from new custom interior, custom made and correct offset Rocket Racing wheels, the engine and transmission were completely gone through and it got new brakes and a new driveshaft. The Autorama crew wanted to make sure that a car worth of representing the 50th Anniversary Ridler Award was not only quality but unique and special so that it would remain in the memories of those who placed their eyes on it. So that is when the decision was made to use this gorgeous 1961 Chevrolet Corvair Lakewood Wagon. During the Friday night 50th Anniversary Ridler’s Ball cocktail party, the crowd experienced the first and probably last time ever that all of the past winners of the coveted Ridler Award and Circle of Champions were together in the same room with each of the Ridler Award winning cars! Each Ridler Award winner and Champion was given a marker to sign the Corvair with – and there are some pretty impressive names on the car.
