It's easy to find a car with 5000 miles or 500 miles--they're everywhere. What we have here is different: Including pre-ship test miles the odometer reads a total of 25, and the car was NEVER dealer prepped. It's still in the wrapper from Bowling Green and 99.9% original. Description ORIGINAL miles All original besides the battery Every piece of shipping plastic is still in place All of the original paperwork Every available option when new Does the radio or A/C work? We couldn't tell you. See, there's a memory fuse that's installed by the dealer to turn them on, and the fuse comes hanging from the turn signal stalk in a blister pack. The fuse was never put in at the factory to make sure the battery wouldn't run down. That fuse is still in the blister--the radio wasn't even tested by the original and only owner. The interior shows what a car looked like straight from the truck. Plastic bags on the seats, Corvette paper carpet savers on the floors, the plastic cover on the steering wheel, hang tags on the mirror, parking brake lever and shifter, and the unopened dealer prep packet are inside. We lifted the cover completely off the driver's seat and partially from the passenger side for the pictures, and we were the first to do it! Of course, every surface is perfect with no scratches, or marks...does that even need to be said about a car with 25 miles on it? The original protective film and care instructions for the glass top are over your head, and the window and content stickers are in place on the windshield. The original red top (this is a two top car) is still latched in place in the hatch. Pieces which never made it onto the car include the four center caps (taken out of their part-numbered bag for the photo for the first time,) the lug nut covers, the locking wheel nuts, the floor mats, the front license plate cover, the front spoiler and the aforementioned fuse. About six years' worth of Corvette Quarterly, new in their plastic bags, are in the car, along with a dozen magazines with ZR-1 road tests, like the “Corvette from Hell” Motor Trend issues. We have the original owner's manual packet with audio cassette (in the original bag,) the audio demo and Bose demo cassettes in their wrappers. ZR-1 owners also received a box full of goodies--a reproduction window sticker, keychain, VHS tape about the build, a hardcover book about the car and a leather portfolio with the owner's name and serial number were the contents. Not only is everything new and unopened we have the original shipping box it came in. We have the “thank you” letter from GM, a recall notice and the original shipping invoice from Bowling Green to the dealer in MA as well. Outside, the car looks slightly bare with the lack of front spoiler, center caps, lug covers or plate bracket, but the oddest look for sure is the big white sticker on the top. There's even a notice label on that sticker about the care of the panel, still there from the top supplier. There are also two rubber door guards on the driver door (and not the right side--the delivery driver didn't need access through there.) The paint is period typical, meaning it's mostly flat and smooth, but nowhere near today's standards...Corvettes were still built to a previous standard, and that's not great. The hatches and doors all close solidly, as they should. We gave the car its first wax job, too--this is an unmolested car. The picture of the headlights on is the first time those motors have been used since they were tested at the factory. Under the hood is the only non-original part on the entire car--the battery. There's simply no way to keep one alive for 20 years. It's a Delco replacement, which is as close as you can get to new. The original belts runs the original accessories, the original “Corvette LT5” plug wires feed the original plugs, and the original filter screens the original oil in the crankcase. Bob Bertelsen's '71 Camaro would be great for the car guy's version of this game. There's not a body panel on it that hasn't been re-formed, modified, or otherwise massaged, but most of the changes are so subtle, without a stock example sitting next to it, they escape the eye. That exemplifies what Bob does as a car builder. He works with the original design, and without trepidation, crafts it into the vision of how he sees the car in his mind. Bob is not a professional car builder, although he certainly possesses the ingenuity and capability it takes to be among the best in the business. Most importantly, he lacks that mental block that most of us have-the one that mocks us, saying, "You aren't capable of doing that!" Take, for example, the roof of his Camaro. Bob wanted to integrate design cues of a fifth-gen Camaro into the car, including a 12-inch-wide recess in the roof panel. Most people who don't do professional metal-fab work would shun the idea, and even quite a few pros would be hesitant to launch into such an endeavor. Not Bob. He dove in, starting by rolling two 3/8-inch tubes and adhering them to the roof to create a basic structure and shape. He then cut out the 12-inch-wide section and crafted a new centersection. He didn't get the consistent arch he wanted the first time, so he modified his metal stretcher, welding a socket to the tool and using a torque wrench to modulate a consistent torque applied to the stretcher. He welded the recessed section into the roof for a subtle enhancement that looks so natural that many people don't even notice it. Bob had RPM Hot Rodding do the interior, starting with a clean slate. They fabricated a custom dash, door panels, and console that houses everything Bob will need for performance driving as well as hitting the open road. The unobtrusive rollcage was created by Bob’s friend, Tom McKenzie. That design element continues as the air flows rearward over the decklid. An original spoiler would have looked disproportionate and clunky with the flush and smooth rear panel of the car. Bob created a new spoiler that is 3/4-inch shorter and 1 1/2 inches smaller (front to rear), incorporating the same 12-inch recess from the roof panel into the center of the spoiler. Another critical part of Bob's craftsmanship is functionality. This is true in the basic hardware, and also in the design aspects of the body. All of the ports and ducts carved into the sheetmetal of his Camaro-aptly named Brute Force-perform a purpose, whether it's directing fresh air toward the engine, onto the rear brakes, or exhausting hot air from the engine compartment. Nothing on this car was overlooked, and every millimeter of sheetmetal was intentionally shaped. Even with his exceptional level of fabrication capability, Bob took the Camaro to Area 51 Autoworx when it was time to have the finishing bodywork done and the car sprayed. Choosing the color was an adventure in itself. His local paint store mixed a dozen or so variations of blue and sprayed them onto sample panels, but none of them were exactly what Bob envisioned. So he talked the paint shop into letting him do some mixing on his own. A dash of this, a drop of that. He was able to create a color he loved, but there was no formula for it. He sprayed it onto a panel and took the pieces to BASF. They scanned it and created a formula, complete with the name Brute Force Blue! A casual glance doesn’t uncover the extraordinary craftsmanship in this car. What looks like an RS bumper is actually three completely custom metal sections, and the original marker light openings were filled with round foglights and brake duct inlets. Even the grille was custom created just for this car. Bob is the owner of A-Plus Powder Coaters, so he made generous use of his company's coating capabilities on the car. Anything that wasn't painted on the Camaro was powdercoated in a special gray texture that he created. On some surfaces, such as the valve covers, he added black with orange accents, creating detail and connecting the engine to the exterior graphics. In addition to a unique look, the powdercoating is durable and easy to clean. He even mixed up a special orange powder and sent it to Baer to have the calipers powdercoated to match the detail paint he used throughout the car. Even though this car was primarily built in Bob's two-car home garage, he is quick to acknowledge those who helped him. Shayne Smeltzer, Willys Smith, and Tom McKenzie all spent weekends at Bob's place working on the Camaro. And Jason Rushforth penned the first rendering of the car. Bob and Jason bantered back and forth about many of the design details that make up the overall statement of the car. One area that combined many of their ideas was the nose of the car. Jason recommended recessing the grille and using a three-piece front bumper. Bob created a grille using CAD tools and had it cut using a water jet. He didn't want the nose to look like an RS, though, so he omitted the upper marker lights and integrated round foglights into the rectangular openings that would have housed standard parking and turn signal lights. Some time ago, Bob was incurably infected with the Pro Touring disease. He competed in the Optima Ultimate Street Car Invitational (OUSCI) with his previous F-body, Code Red, and he took measures with his current project to make sure it lived up to the "brute" in its name. In fact, immediately after the car debuted in the summer of 2012, Bob competed in our inaugural Muscle Car of the Year (MCOTY) competition at National Trail Raceway, a mere day after earning the Goodguys Muscle Machine of the Year award. Since Bob has competed with cars in the past, he knew that he needed to outfit his machine with the right equipment to get the job done. He chose DSE suspension systems front and rear, using the company's Hydroformed subframe up front and its Quadralink kit in the rear. The front subframe is a bolt-in system that mounts tubular upper and lower control arms, C6 steering knuckles, DSE power rack-and-pinion steering, and a DSE splined sway bar into one seamless package. The Quadralink rear system completely replaces the leaf springs, using a tubular four-link setup with a Panhard bar. Bob used JRi coilovers-DSE's preferred unit-at all four corners. Bob also installed a pair of DSE wide wheeltubs in the rear to make room for massive 335/30ZR18 tires. Together, the front and rear DSE systems created a high-performance chassis that's as competent on the track as it is on the street. Of course, suspension upgrades alone do not a Pro Touring car make. The DSE front spindles wear Baer 14-inch rotors and six-piston calipers, while the Moser 9-inch rear axle is outfitted with the relatively new Baer Tracker full-floating axle kit and 14-inch rotors with six-piston calipers. The Baer Tracker converts the rearend to a full-floating design to eliminate axleshaft deflection during hard cornering. This keeps the rotors from pushing the pistons into the calipers during high lateral loads, requiring you to pump the pedal to move the pads back into position. The entire rear view of the Camaro is created by Bob’s fabrication handiwork. He formed a sheetmetal bumper and molded it into the rear panel, along with crafting a lower valance that resembles a fifth-gen Camaro, and incorporates the tailpipes. Under the almost completely handbuilt hood lies a Mast Motorsports-built LS7 powerplant. The Mast-built 427 grunts out 650 hp with a reciprocating assembly made up of Callies and Mahle components that are built to take abuse without worry. The engine uses a Mast dual wide-band engine management system for calibration work. Bob had a Flex-a-lite aluminum radiator built to fit his custom core support, and added a Flex-a-lite dual electric fan setup that moves 4,600 cfm of air to keep the engine cool, even when Bob has the Vintage Air cranked up on hot Midwestern summer days. A Tremec T56 Magnum six-speed connects the power to the Moser 9" axle. When it came to the interior, almost everything was pitched to make room for custom work. This is one part of the car that Bob didn't do himself, calling on RPM Hot Rods in Pittsburgh instead. They crafted a custom dashboard to house the Stack Motorsports multifunction display gauge cluster, Vintage Air controls, and ididit tilt steering column. The dash also holds a Stack tire pressure monitoring system to report air pressure and temperature, both critical factors on a road course. RPM also fabricated custom door panels and replaced the rear seat with panels to cover the widened wheeltubs and to hold a mix of Kenwood and Alpine stereo equipment. ProCar seats were modified and stitched up in gray and orange leather that was also generously laid over every surface in the interior except the floor. Even though RPM did most of the work in the interior, Bob's attention to detail still prevails. He powdercoated the center and spokes of the Lecarra steering wheel, and then had the rim wrapped with the same leather and orange stitching of the rest of the interior. Bob is an ordinary car guy with extraordinary vision and fabrication skills. This is the fourth Camaro he’s built, and each one goes further than the last in performance and execution. While he’s committed to driving and competing in this car for the immediate future, we have to wonder if the wheels are already turning in his head about the next one! The Z28.19 code on the fender tag calls out the black stripes front and rear, and the contrast with the white paint is awesome. New emblems and chrome, clean glass and excellent trim complement the finish. Goodyear Polyglas tires give off a great vintage vibe and tie the whole thing together. Interior Inside, any and all wear parts were replaced, and everything from the carpet to the headliner are in great shape. The Z/28 specific 8000RPM tach and floor mounted gas pedal are original--you need to have both on a real car. Mechanical Under the hood is the original CGP coded LT-1 engine. The 3970010 4 bolt main block was cast in Saganaw on January 22, 1971, and the engine was assembled three days later in Flint, both proper numbers in relation to each other as well as the car's 3rd week of February assembly date in Norwood. January 20th cast 3973487 heads are in place with upgraded steel roller rockers actuating the valves. A Holley list 4801 carburetor sits atop the proper 3959594 aluminum intake. There's a small anomaly in the VIN stamp, and if you look at the pictures you'll see it. The car's final six digits are 537368 while the stamp reads 537338. Now, either this is the original engine to this car with an assembly line error a single digit off, or someone managed to track down the engine to the Z/28 EXACTLY 30 cars later and took the motor out of it. Occam's Razor says it's the first option. Power is sent back through a Muncie four speed that's out of a 1973 Camaro. Out back is the correct 10 bolt unit (no 12 bolts at all in '71 Camaros) with the Z/28 only CG axle code. While you're underneath, notice the smooth and clean floor pans, all new lines and hardware, new fuel tank and new exhaust. This is a cool car that's just starting to come into its own. As Fesler once churned out 10-plus SEMA cars every year over a six-year stretch, you could say that he knows a thing or two about building a crowd-wowing, show-stopping machine. When GM brought the new Camaro back in 2010, Fesler’s enthusiasm for the popular ponycar resulted in him putting some “what-if” Camaro designs on paper – channeling his penchant for design, he put the ever-popular ’69 Camaro’s essence here, visualized a body kit there. He eventually settled on a design that had a 1969 flair to it, and was both visually striking and undoubtedly unique. Of course, what separates Chris from the thousands of 16-year-old boys who draw awesome cars in study hall is the fact that he actually turned those drawings into the Fesler-Moss Camaro you see here. Fesler Built not only owns the design patent for this stunning Camaro, the company also makes most of its parts in-house. But this machine is much more than a 5th Gen with a body kit and a Jon Moss licensing deal – the expertly integrated LS9 engine is your first clue. “The LS9 itself is a direct swap into that engine bay,” Fesler starts. “The difference is, we use a re-pinned Camaro ECU and re-wired a Camaro wiring harness to work with the engine. And by doing that, we’ve got almost a complete factory install. “It probably took us about a month to figure out all of the wiring and computer issues so we could do a plug-and-play setup. The learning curve for building a Camaro LS9 was steep – probably the biggest problem we had was getting the paddle shifters to work with the automatic transmission. Other LS9 swaps use the manual trans, which is easy compared to using the auto. Getting the transmission to talk to the motor and the paddle shifters to work right was a pretty good challenge.” This supercharged LS9 has been tweaked to make a bit more than the rated 638 horses. While this beast’s internals are all factory stock, the team designed a new air intake that wears an Airaid filter to inhale lots of clean, smooth air. And a highly efficient Magnuson intercooler is charged with keeping the charge air nice and cool. Once the LS9 does its thing, spent gases flow through Fesler 1 7/8-inch headers, feed into a 3-inch collector, go through high-flow cats, and dump into a 3-inch B&B exhaust system. Those additional go-fast goodies are combined with a two-stage, in-tank fuel pump system and a tuned ECU to produce roughly 705 horsepower, and 680 foot-pounds of torque. “We can get a lot more out of it, but we tune it back down to keep it reliable for years,” Fesler says. “And really, anything over 700 on the street is just nuts anyway.” While initial auto trans work was done with a 6L80E, once the GMPP 6L90E became available, one was bolted up along with a custom Hughes Performance converter. The Driveshaft Shop supplied a new driveshaft – good for 1,500 horses, and axles – good for 1,000 horses, with only the stock differential between all of that power and an overworked set of Continental ExtremeContact DWS tires. Chris’s thoughts on keeping that diff stock: “We haven’t put stickies on it yet…and those street tires will definitely spin!” Fesler-Moss number 1 also sports a serious suspension, as a Pedders Track II kit was installed. Pedders is known for providing just the right parts for sublime handling; in this case, goodies like body and suspension bushings, 27mm sway bars with endlinks, and 30-way-adjustable coilovers. These Pedders parts nix the wheelhop and kill the body roll, while dropping this Camaro’s stance a couple inches in the process. Speaking of dropping, a Fesler-branded Baer brake system adds some serious stop to the LS9’s go; 15-inch rotors sport 6-piston calipers that clamp down on all four corners, and braided lines and a Baer proportioning valve keep the pedal firm and the stops drama-free.And no, your eyes aren’t deceiving you: if you know those brakes are 15s – how freakin’ big are the wheels? The 3-piece Asanti FS-914 rims measure a whopping 22 inches. While hitting potholes would definitely be a bad idea, these rims, when spinning, provide enough wind power to light Scottsdale for a night. Even though the car was still in show-winning form the car was repainted and had a fresh interior installed in 2003--our owner is a very particular man. Since the car already had gone through a full frame off restoration, the attention this time around was on the body panels. Extensive photos show that the shell was in great condition with nothing beyond the normal chips, cracks and waves inherent in a 1960's Corvette. The bonding strips are fully intact and ALL of the body panels are original with no evidence of accidents. A brand new set of aluminum wheels replaced the original rallye wheels as the only change made to the car from factory specification. The door and hood gaps are excellent, every piece of chrome is shiny, straight and perfect and the tinted glass is beautiful. This is a stunning Corvette. Chevrolet offered ten exterior colors and eight interior colors, and oddly there were three blue options for each. The exterior on this car is Lynndale Blue while the interior is Teal. While that might seem discordant the combination is truly stunning, and the blue/green hue of the tinted glass ties both together flawlessly. The interior shows nearly no wear since the car has traveled under 2,300 miles since it was installed. The seats are firm with excellent covers, the dash is straight and the trim and brightwork look new. Through the years of our ownership if anything looked dingy or out of sorts it was replaced. During a reseal we confirmed the internal engine components, heads and more were not only correct parts but also properly date coded. The engine puffed occasionally on startup (again, our owner demands perfection of his own vehicles) so we had the heads rebuilt with new springs, seals, guides and a full valve job. Compression is even across all cylinders. We went through the original carburetors a couple times, fussed and fiddled with the entire car and it's now the nicest driving, best running solid lifter Corvette on the planet. That's not hyperbole--this car starts and runs as though it has modern electronic fuel injection on it. The original transmission is rebuilt and works flawlessly. There are no drivetrain noises of any kind. This car is equipped with rare power brakes as well as ultra rare heavy duty brakes. The original booster was restored and the master cylinder is both date and part number correct. The correct J56 adjustable proportioning valve is in place, as are the correct calipers, brake pads and caliper stiffening brackets. The chassis is original and bears proper markings per NCRS guidelines. Original and NOS parts were used whenever possible. Again, everything works exactly as it should with no excuses. The 2003 paint job was nice but not perfect, so it was stripped completely to the gelcoat and repainted again in 2010 under the watchful eye of Elio Martin. It has traveled fewer than 500 miles since. The paint itself is thoroughly modern with perfectly straight panels, the black stinger buried under the miles-deep clearcoat and jambs as pristine as the exterior. It's over restored and stunning. We also have a letter from three owners ago who cataloged his long-term ownership: This Corvette was always treated well. This is a 1980 El Camino in poor condition. It runs though, and it would be an excellent project car or source of parts. It is rusted at several places along the body, but has the original wheel center caps, rims and beauty rims (one beauty rim in bad condition). It has had two owners total, both nonsmokers. The windshield was replaced about five years ago and has a built-in antenna. The radio is the original pushbutton am/fm. The car has air conditioning. The bed of the pickup is solid, with a liner and tarp in good condition. The door locks are operational with key. The engine has new plugs, wires, distributor cap, good battery and radiator. Some of the instrument panel bulbs need replaced. NOTE:Existing crossover member is completely rusted out and frame is in poor condition.
