European "gray market" 1958 Volkswagen Beetle. This very special Beetle features the small rear "Snowflake" brake light/reflectors, original B-pillar Semaphore flip-out turn signals, headlamps with the turn signals inside the glass headlamp covers, locking steering column, full reclining front bucket seats, clock, and fuel gauge. She is fitted with the more attractive US high chrome bumpers (I think better looking than the lower Euro bumper). Everything on the car is still labeled in German... VIN info, air cleaner instructions, labels, etc. Very cool. A beautiful car, she's undergone an extentensive and gorgeous extended restoration over a number of years, including a rebuilt correct 36HP Type I 1200cc engine, rebuilt four-speed transmission, new clutch, new brake lines and associated components, repacked wheel bearings, etc. She runs beautifully and is very reliable. Original 6 volt system throughout. The undercarriage has been cleaned and sealed in a durable clear, NOT painted... you can see it is all original and perfectly rust-free. The VIN on the pan matches the VIN number on the ID tag. The suspension, wheel wells, and wheels have been restored and repainted. Brand new shocks all around, brand new tires all around, she drives very nicely. Rare parts such as the fuel cap, oil cap, rear ash tray, one-year-only sun visors, etc. are all present. There currently is no radio or speaker in the uncut original dash. The exterior has a newer and beautiful repaint in the original Agave Metallic gold/green color, done in high-end 2-stage RM Diamont urethane enamel and clear coat. She's got a few minor nicks, etc. but still shows wonderfully, even up close. The only body blemis to really note is a small crack in the hinge side of the hood... they only have one hinge and are notorious for this. The glass is the original German Sekurit glass and in great condition, with new rubber, felt, etc. Side windows roll up and down smoothly. Doors are hung perfectly and open/close with ease. The interior is also gorgeous, and features the original headliner and door panels (fantastic condition), new carpet, new seat upholstery, and new dash paint to match. Original green plastic sun visors, front and rear ashtrays, unrestored original steering column, shifter, brake lever, pedals, etc. Very nice speedo showing the original 85k miles. Rare options include the locking steering column, auxiliary fuel gauge, and matching clock, as well as the fully-reclining front bucket seats on original frames. The lights, heater, wipers, locking steering, starter button, charging system, etc. all work as they should... wiring is all original 6-volt generator system with wires changed only as needed. It does come with the original spare wheel and tire, as well as the original jack. The original Semaphores are present but not connected; one works, one does not (bench tested). The fuel gauge works (bench tested), the sending unit does not. The clock is not currently running. Bob Koch (among others) offers rebuilt exchange units, and rebuilding services. The horn works (bench tested), but does not blow from the center steering wheel button... I have not trouble-shot this. The speedometer, lights, front turn signals, brake lights, wipers, etc. are all in proper working order. The heater works properly, as does the parking brake. Again, tires and shocks are brand-new, and the car runs and drives extremely well. This is a turn-key running and driving classic that will only go up in value. The car is imported from sweeden in 1961 so it had been updated with later steering wheel and tail lights I have returned the original glass snowflakes tail lights to the car. The car has no rust and is absolutely straight with all the original body parts from factory including tube front bumpers and dimple back fenders. Castle 4 prong hood and original paint and interior, with 1 respray outside in 1961 when it was imported. This car is a matching numbers car with the original 36 horse motor that has been freshly rebuilt with 40 miles on it,it has powder coated tins and an original accessory from oil filter. Car runs and drives you just need to charge the battery and put some gas! Has an accessory electric gas gauge, and I also have a brand new hartz stay fast canvas ragtop new in the box black that comes with it as well. Transmission: 1965 type 1 transmission was sent out to TRANSFORM in the LBC, where it was fitted with a Cush-Loc clutch disc, Kennedy 1700 pound pressure plate, 4:37 ratio ring and pinion, and an aluminum short throw shift kit with a super diff and welded hubs. That’s about it for the major stuff, although there are TONS of other little custom things and features that have made this bug the magazine featured and award winning show car it is. From the Southwest Championship BUG-IN to the BIG BUG SHOOTOUT, to the multiple awards for BEST INTERIOR and BEST PAINT, this machine just can’t help but collect awards when it goes out! The car still looks and appears to be ready for a major show, and WE HAVE NOT EVEN DETAILED IT!!!!! This is how we got it, and all we have done is a quick wipe down with Turtle Wax quickshine, and a vacuum of the interior! Just imagine how freaking amazing it will look when you take the time to lay it out when you get it home!?!?!?!?! There are a handful or so really tiny marks on the painted finish from normal driving, like stone chips and stuff, but nothing major whatsoever. The body work is incredible, and shows wonderfully! It starts with ease, idles clean, and burbles so nice that EVERYONE will come over to ask what’s under the Cal-Look hood. It has a TON of power, and is one of the fastest VW’s I have had the chance to drive! It rivals a lot of the BECK 356 Replicas we get, and that’s understandable, given the racing history of Jim Karaba. It runs cool, doesn’t do anything funny, and is a high-revving machine ready to roar when you hit the gas. Ride quality is surprisingly good for how low it is, and I attribute that to the high quality components used and installation of them. Lights work, blinkers work, and door popper works, although passenger side is a bit finicky at times. It is an absolute BLAST to drive, and will have everyone from 10 to 100 pulling out a cell phone to snap a pic when you drive by! Hell, it got 2,400 likes on Instagram in a freaking HOUR one day! Here is an unusual 1958 Semaphore Ragtop with a locking steering ignition. This car has been sitting outside for over 25 years. I believe that this car was purchased by an armed forces person who imported the car in the early 70's. There are upgrades from that area that include, removal of semaphores ( it comes with two semaphores) larger chrome mid sixties taillights, us bumpers, no over rider supports, mid sixties fuel gauge with an electric sending unit on the original fuel tank up by the collar of the tank( not mechanical), mph speed o and a 40 horse. Obviously the car needs all mechanical s rebuilt. The 40 horse is locked up. I had just cleaned and pressure washed out the car just prior to pics and than it started raining! I have a bunch of pics and will try and show all damage and rust. The car is moderately straight for its age. It needs the pans replaced. The heater channels have pitting rust. The drivers side door pillar to the heater channel is rusted through. The passenger side bottom of the door and lower hinge area have rust. The outside of the battery tray has rust. The bottom of the spare tire area has rust through. The hood has a small crack near the bottom. The rear fenders are on the rougher side. There was a Frankenstein weld repair on one. Personally I think it goes with the entire patina look of the car. The bumper wholes have been elongated. The rear h apron is there but has rust through where the car sat in the dirt for a long period of time. The rear deck lid has the same area rusted through. It appears that maybe the deck lid had scoops from the 70's at one time with mounting holes. . The sunroof assembly is all there along with the golde handle. I have the seats that were taken apart as you can see in pics. One seat back is missing. The front door panels are ANOTHER bad 70s mod!The car looks to be originally a gray color, than black than red? The pressure washer removed some black so with some tedious work it could be brought back even more? In my opinion, this a pretty unusual car that would make an excellent patina type preservation type car. If you could repair the pan and the rusty areas, select what you want to do with the drive train and clear coat the body and roll it. My wife and I are big VW fans. We have a 65 Bug in Fontana Grey and just recently acquired a 1960 Karman Ghia coupe. Therefore, our 1958 VW ragtop needs to find a new home. When I first saw this car 5 years ago I just loved the mild Ca. custom look, not over the top, but just right to my eye. I wanted to buy the car almost immediately, but of course had to better understand just what the car was. The former owner filled in the details: 1915 cc motor, twin webers (44's), heavy duty clutch, a mild cam, front disk brakes, drop spindles, a touch pad audio system, approx. 100hp. Well all of that sounded just right. And I think the EMPI wheels were a great finishing touch. I am handy around the house but could not tackle a VW project and do all of the above. I was appreciative that the former owner had all that good work done. 15 minutes after seeing the car, I wrote the check. The paint looks great but has a couple of flaws.... there is an area on the top of the rear fender on the driver side where the paint has lifted up where the fender joins the body and there is some minor flaking in the rain gutter on the "A" pillar on the driver side (about 3"). Note the absence of turn signals on the front fenders.......removed for a clean fender look...... they have been relocated to the head lamp housings (see photo). The housing for the license plate light was removed from the back deck lid for a clean look, and those lights were moved to the side mounted license plate on the rear bumper. The car runs great and pulls strong in every gear and sounds like a minor beast......an easy run to 80 mph on the freeway entry ramps. One flaw to note with the tranny..... all shifts are smooth but if you run out second gear and then back off the gas, it will pop out of second gear...... if you hold the "bus style" shifter it will not do that. Please check out the pictures.....I think it is a very special car. We live in Burbank half the year and the other half in Pennsylvania. Car was purchased in California and is currently in Burbank. Type 1 Produced: October 1971The Engine is an AH from 1974 with Duel Weber 34 icts, Hex Bar Linkage and a 009 Distributor. 1641 with 1500 miles on rebuild.The Body and Tunnel are 1972. Pan-Halves are 1973. Deck Lid and Rear Apron are 1967. Fenders and Tail Lights are 1966.The Paint Color is a VW Type 1 1958 color Agave Green (L240) the Chassiswas coated completely with Rust Bullet.The Front Beam is a standard width adjustable with stock spindles and Disk Brakes with all Stainless Steel Lines. The rear Suspension has Drum Brakes and is lowered one inch. tires are 185/65 R15 Front and 205/70 R15 Rear mounted on five inch BRM style rims.The Interior is Black on Black; you may notice the Front seat is a Bench this was created from a rear seat out of a 71 Convertible Beetle. The Dash Pad has been removed and 1960s trim added. Stereo is a Custom Autosound Vintage Style AM/FM/MP3 unit with a 400 watt BOSS amp. FatMat sounddeadening mat was used.
