Even as late as 1965, Road & Track was still singing the praises of the 1600cc Giulia Spider Veloce. Nevertheless, for the 1966 model year, Alfa began selling its replacement, named the “Duetto,” via a contest that Alfa ran with the Italian public. It was the last project in which Batista Pininfarina was personally involved. And while widely viewed as classic design today, it was met with some controversy when new. Power was initially from the familiar Alfa 1600cc twin-cam engine that powered the last Giulias. Emission laws affected Alfa particularly hard and 1968 was a lost year in the U.S. The car returned for 1969 with a 1750cc engine and SPICA mechanical fuel injection. 1970 was another lost year and 1971 saw the car return with its lovely boat tail chopped off. The so-called Kamm-tail spider continued on basically unchanged (save for bigger bumpers and a 250cc boost in displacement) until 1982 when electronic injection was introduced and in 1983 styling was freshened slightly. Interior changes were about it until 1991 when the final (and quite successful) cleanup of the design took place prior to its discontinuation in 1994. All Spiders are brisk performers with sub-10 second 0-60 times and stellar convertible tops. Parts are readily available and while they are more complex and don’t tolerate “fools with tools” as readily as an MGB, they are more rewarding to drive. Rust was a major issue in all cars prior to the final series of 1991-94 cars. Last year in which the spider was built, only 1,956 were built in 1993 which was 1.6% of the total production from 1970 to 1993. The last big change was in 1990 with the Bosch Motronic electronic fuel injection with an electric fan. Two owner, California Alfa Spider! Clean CarFax, no accidents. Very quick and responsive, motor runs excellent. Great turnkey driver with A/C and electric windows. It is in great mechanical & cosmetic condition. It comes with a very rare hard top and a soft top. 1986 Alfa Romeo Spider Quadrifoglio Verde "Spectacular restoration on a 38,018 mile car" Gorgeous Alfa Red Interior: Grey/Black/Red leather interior Convertible top: Black Convertible Boot: Black Engine: 2.0L double overhead camshaft /Bosch Fuel-injection Transmission: 5/speed manual Mileage: 38,018 Serial number: ZARBA5411G1040667 Introduced at the Geneva Motor Show in 1966 to replace the aging Giulietta Spider, the Battista “Pinin” Farina-designed Spider was based on the Giulia 105 chassis. Expensive at introduction at $4000, almost the same as a Jaguar E-Type, it afforded entry into the world of Italian design and performance, i.e. “the Poor Man’s Ferrari”. It remained in production for almost 30 years, and until recently was Alfa’s last rear-wheel-drive car. The Spider was offered in three trim levels; the $20,500 Quadrifoglio Verde (“Four-Leaf Clover”, Alfa’s long-time good luck charm), the $17,000 Veloce, and the $14,000 entry-level Graduate. All were mechanically identical, with a five-speed and DOHC 2 liter under the hood; the differences were in the trim levels and materials. The Graduate made do with steel wheels and trim rings vs. (optional) alloys, vinyl roof and seats instead of cloth and leather, optional A/C, and manual-wind windows. Marketed to relate to the car Dustin Hoffman drove in 1967’s The Graduate (the movie that put Alfa “on the map” in the USA), it was a very popular model. After a naming contest which drew over 100,000 entries, the name that was selected presented legal copyright issues so Alfa Romeo stuck with the simple Spider 1600. A simple name belied the successful combination of very pretty lines on a successful chassis, so successful that the Spider remained in production for almost 30 years with very few changes. In 1970 Alfa introduced the Series 2 which featured minor changes to the interior and exterior, notably the squared off trunk lid and grill. The engine was upgraded to a 1962 CC engine and the car was renamed the 2000 Spider Veloce. 1982 saw the introduction of the Series 3 Spider, which featured a black rubber spoiler on the trunk lid but also introduced a 2.0-liter engine with Bosch Fuel Injection. THIS CAR...... THE QUADRIFOGLIO VERDE Few cars are as associated with a place as the Alfa Romeo is with Italy, and few cars are as associated with a brand as the Spider is to Alfa. This spectacular Green Four-leaf Clover was a limited edition model introduced in 1986 with a number of aesthetic enhancements such as the red carpets and a hard rubber spoiler. It retained the 2.0-liter double overhead cam engine with 5-speed that makes the Spider such a joy to drive. It is well equipped with Factory Air-conditioning, Power windows, AM/FM Stereo Radio, Power remote outside driver's mirror, Leather interior and it's original 2.0 liter, twin cam, Bosch fuel-injected engine and 5/speed manual transmission. You can buy this magnificently restored Limited Edition Four-leaf clover Alfa Romeo for less money than it cost to repaint and replace the interior and convertible top. On order and to be included at no charge is a brand new Convertible black boot. Among the many things done to restore this car to it's present condition ... Very expensive professional paint job New Interior, including new carpeting (both in the car and the trunk) New performance tires New convertible top (and a new boot is coming) I realize you can find these cars with high mileage and "dogged out" for $5,000-$10,000 but if your particular and want a car of this quality, here it is and at a price much less than you could restore one to this level...even if the car was a gift. Please call us at (954) 873-6495 to make an offer or ask any questions. MARKET TREND As Alfa Romeo returns to the US with its new line of roadsters, interest has renewed in Alfa as a brand. This perking up has carried over to the latterly unloved 80’s spiders with a decent uptick in values for well-sorted cars. Though basket case spider values have remained flat, restored examples have risen and look set to continue that trend. SUMMARY It has often been said that every car collector should be required to own an Alfa Romeo at some point, and what better example of a post war Alfa can there be than a Spider? The word ‘iconic’ may be thrown about freely, but few would argue that it is appropriate to use with the Alfa Spider. REMEMBER THE "GOOD OL DAYS" THEY LOOKED SOMETHING LIKE THIS.... In the efforts to make the SS as light as possible, the wheelbase was made four inches shorter than the Sprint's. Since it was intended for competition use, the SS only had room for two people and a limited amount of storage for luggage. However, this allowed the cabin to be much more spacious than the four-seat Sprint. According to Alfa Romeo Historic Motoring, chassis number AR 381227 originally corresponds to Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint Speciale (101.21), engine series AR 00121 - Manufactured on the 14th of September 1964 and sold on April 20, 1965 to Alfa Romeo Inc., Newark USA.The example offered here makes for an ideal driver's SS in correct, refreshing non-red paint color and good mechanicals. Other noteworthy items include correct radio delete, Borrani vented wheels, and the unique plenum and air box - considered 'regular' 105 Veloce items, but are believed to be original on the later cars. All body numbers are present on the front hood, rear decklid hinge, and firewall. The older paintwork is well suited for a touring candidate, while the interior upholstery displays well and appears fairly recent. Its engine compartment remains remarkably clean, while the car runs as strong and smooth as the striking cosmetics imply. Above all, the Giulia SS's appeal lies in its good looks and driving pleasure. It continues to be one of the most recognizable and collectable post-war Alfa Romeos to date. This auction is for my 1974 Alfa Romeo GTV 2000 which I had highly customized by the Custom Shop in Flanagan, IL a couple of years back who has built a number of national championship street rods, customs and other. I had the car repainted (concours quality) in the same LeMans blue it was which is a Alfa European color they used for two years and install the GTA door latches and GTV 1750 grille and rear tail lights because I prefer that look. The motor has been rebuilt and is a up from 128hp to 153hp along with the transmission and all mechanicals. Alfaholics stainless exhaust throughout headers to the tailpipe and we had the headers wrapped with Titanium wrap. The interior has Corbeau seats with $5,200 worth of Edelman hides with red stitching along with the dash, console etc. Extensive use of the best and most expensive sound deadening insulation from the firewall to the trunk and inside the doors and all new weatherstripping, the car was totally rebuilt. The car could be raced if you wanted to but I think it is way too nice for that but it would be a spirited track car and has an Alfahollics foam filled 55 Liter aluminum fuel cell and a custom roll bar painted in LeMans blue and padded. Instruments are by Vintage Customs $1,200 plus, Kenwood / Sony audio system with GPS, back up camera, amps and eight Xplod HF series speakers including subwoofer with Alfa Romeo grille, see photos in the auction. Alfahollics billet pedals, Alfaholics sway bar and suspension, Panasport rims, 205/55/15 tires, a first rate air conditioning system from Classic Auto Air and upgraded heater condenser etc, Momo Steering wheel, high quality custom carpet and custom doors with billet controls. iPhone/iPad hookup, the trunk is custom finished and illuminated and I just put a new battery in two weeks ago. No expense was spared and even though I have $65,000 invested I have to pare down my Alfa collection. I have grown fond of the Giulietta Spider Veloce's owning five of them now so I have not hardly driven this car in the last year maybe twice so I am selling it. I have the bumpers and over riders etc. if you want to add them also. I am certain that I have forgotten a few things and will add them if I remember anything else. The car is located in Bloomington, IL and my contact info is 309-531-0665
