Up for sale is a beautiful 1961 Mercury Comet, the perfect car for cruising with the windows down. Originally conceived as the more sophisticated cousin of the Ford Falcon, this car is inspiring from any angle with cat-eye tail fins in the rear accentuating the scene stealing two-tone paint job and long rear trunk area. Powering this ride is the reliable 144 cubic inch Thrift-Power inline-6 mated to a Cruise-o-Matic 2-speed transmission for smooth and easy weekend rides. Considered a "compact" car in the early 60's, the interior is surprisingly roomy for 6 adults with the included bench seats. There are many new or newer parts on this car, from the full exhaust system, distributor, filters, rear bumper, and all the interior finishing. Brand new Coker white wall tires wrap the original steel wheels with chrome dog-dish hub caps. Inside you'll find two-tone vinyl seating to compliment the exterior look and a fully functional instrument cluster. This is a truly rare car, you don't see many of these on the road anymore unlike other classics, so you're sure to turn heads and get compliments everywhere you go. It's a clean and reliable car for some weekend cruising and head turns in it's current condition, or a great base for a full on restoration project should you choose to go that route. Either way, you will not regret adding this car to your collection!

With a subtle color combination, a remarkably handsome interior, and a thrifty drivetrain, it's a hobby car you can enjoy without guilt. The idea of the economy car isn't a new one, and even upscale Mercury was getting in on the act with the Comet. It offers styling cues taken from the full-sized machines sitting next to it in the showroom, but thanks to compact proportions, it was easy to drive and reasonably peppy even with its gas-sipping inline-six engine. This one shows straight sheetmetal thanks to a lifetime in the south, and while the code M Sultana White paint job is subtle, this one gets all its attention simply by being unusual. Dramatically carved sheetmetal topped by tiny fins that were the '50s last gasp give it a lot of visual interest and are actually helped by the low-key paint. Chrome and trim are quite good, and even on the budget-oriented Comet, there's quite a bit of it, including some rather massive-looking bumpers, a simple grille that should look familiar to Ford fans, and that stainless strip that outlines the car's profile and accentuates the kick-up behind the doors. This is a small car that looks big, which was entirely the point. The jewel in this Comet's crown has to be the beautifully reupholstered interior. For an affordable car at this price, you wouldn't expect it to be this nice, but they spent good money re-creating a period look with comfortable black cloth and white vinyl. Two-tone door panels are remarkably stylish for a basic car, with only the armrest showing its age after nearly 50 years of elbows resting on it. The instrument panel is a piece of '60s sculpture in bright metal and clear plastic, and offers both a temperature and a fuel level gauge in addition to the speedometer, all of which are in original condition and showing their age. There's a 3-speed manual transmission with column shift, but there are no options on this basic Merc: no radio, no power assists, no extras. However, you do get clean carpets, a taut headliner, and excellent use of colors give it a bright, airy feel inside, so it certainly doesn't feel like Mercury's lowest-priced car that year. Even the trunk is nicely finished and comes complete with a correct mat and a full-sized spare with matching cover. Code S means this car carries Ford's trusty 144 cubic inch inline-six fits neatly with the Comet's economy-based mission. But in the small car, it's reasonably peppy at the same time, with a suitably vintage grumble from the single exhaust system. Bright yellow on the valve cover and air cleaner works well with the basic black on the engine itself, making the machinery stand out against the white engine bay. Given the condition of the car, it should be no surprise that the engine bay is equally well-preserved with plenty of evidence of proper maintenance over the years. It starts easily and using a 3-speed manual transmission, pulls the car around with aplomb and pulls down remarkable fuel economy that's a boon to hobbyists today. The gas tank is relatively new, and original steel wheels wear a set of dog-dish hubcaps and recent 185/70/13 blackwall radials. Unusual yet eminently practical for today's times, this Comet is a great entry-level hobby car that won't cost you much now or on the road. 1961 Mercury Comet coupe. Straight 6 cyl, 1 bbl carb, automatic. Runs, drives, stops but NEEDs WORK. Not freeway safe. Could use a very healthy tune up, exhaust manifold gasket, carb rebuild, brake inspection and a fresh tank of gas. Straight with exception to a bump in the hood. No deep rust, minor surface rust, no bubbles. Floor pans are solid. Trunk is solid. Appears to have a little bondo around the rear wheel well. No other bondo was found on inspection. Paint not perfect and not original. There are areas where the paint is faded, pealing, and weathering. Front seat and headliner are in poor shape, rear seat is very nice. The car is currently registered and is an original CA car. It has been sitting for about 2 years untouched. This barn find needs love. It fired right up with a little starting fluid, but again, it needs work. Pink in hand, motivated to sell. For date code info look at http://www.mercurystuff.com/1960-comet-vehicle-identification.html Look at all pictures, ask questions. The car is in Ventura CA. Will need to be picked up. I can show the car in person with a minimum of 48 hours notice. Car is sold as is, where it is. I will work you on shipping arraignments. Must be paid in full 3 days following the auction. Cash I best but a $500 depoit is required within 24 hours.

Introduced in 1961 as a unibody compact vehicle the Oldsmobile Cutlass was made by the Oldsmobile division of Geneal Motors. The major competition facing the cutlass was the dodge Lancer and the mercury Comet. The Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme was a mid size car produced by General Motors for the American market. It was always at the top of the Cutlass range. It began as a trim package developed its own roof line and eventually was mechanically divorced from the later smaller Cutlasses. 1972 was the only year in which the Cutlass Supreme notchback hardtop could be equipped with the L75 455 and M20 four speed transmission and only 77 of these cars were produced. All 1972 L75 455 M20 cars used the larger 2.07 valves and the W30 automatic camshaft. This gave the L75 455/M20 cars 270 net horsepower as opposed to the TH400 automatic-equipped L75 cars which produced 250 net horsepower. The 1972 Hurst/Olds was based on the Supreme two-door hardtop and convertible powered by both versions of the 455 Rocket offered on the 442 along with a Turbo 400 transmission with Hurst Dual/Gate shifter. The H O convertible also served as the Indianapolis 500 Pace Car in 1972. 1972 was also the final year for Olds to offer the Cutlass Supreme convertible until 1990. In its final year it was the best selling convertible in the U.S. with 11571 sold or 16% of the market beating the Fleetwood Eldorado and corvette. T From 1973 to 1975 the only Oldsmobile convertible offered was the full-sized Delta 88 Royale. This car is all original Including the low low mileage FULL FINANCING AVAILABLE. Nationwide Shipping Warranties and Insurance for qualified buyers.
