Up for sale a very nice 1974 Mercedes 240D, 4 speed manual - low mileage car. Highly desirable white over tobacco brown color combination - would make a great economical daily driver or full restoration project for a collector.I bought this car locally here in the northwest thru ebay, sight unseen- intending it to be a quick flip and make a buck and although it was very clean and presentable, it needed a some attention which was surprise given what I had paid for it and how it was represented. I was not looking for a project when I purchased it, which created some friction with the family over all the time and money spent making it better so now that the bulk of the work is done and I can sell it feeling better about its condition, it is time to part with it. Most everything I am aware that needed attention has been addressed - especially the majors and there isn't much left to do but I need to sell it and clear out the garage and not have the constant reminder of my best laid plans gone awry...so my loss is your gain.This car runs and drives, starts and stops great. It is fun to drive and it gets compliments when ever I take it out. It's obviously not a speed demon but with the 4 speed it does just fine and cruises great on the freeway. I have been driving it regularly with all the nice summer weather we have had but it has been parked the last few days with the rain we are now getting and will likely remain there until sold. The exterior looks very nice, albeit it does have a few blemishes and dings from use but very presentable for its 40+ years of age. Looks to be original paint with exception of the right front fender. It isn't really obvious to most but looks to have been resprayed at some point in its life.Wipers, washers, lights, locks, AC, blower motor/fan, radio and horn work. Tires appear good with lots of tread. Car was previously a Washington car before coming to Oregon (so no salt) and its overall condition and past service stickers indicate it was cared for and maintained. Mileage on the odometer is 60,504 and is believed to be correct as represented by the previous seller.Tags and plates are new - good to July 2017 and I have a clean title in my name ready for transfer.The interior is very nice - no rips or tears, dash is perfect as is headliner. Other than a couple minor surface bubbles on the very lower area of the rear fenders, the car otherwise appears solid and rust free. So putting this up for sale...don't really want to but need the $$...I have used it for several years as my child - school / runaround / long trip vehicle. KBB books it out at $1,570 in FAIR condition which is needing some mechanical work and fairly crappy condition; Good book is $1,730..with the brand new tires and after doing the mechanical work it needs, I'd say this is a solid $2000 car.....here is the long story on the car - it has 76,000 original miles. I am the second owner (although carfax says I am the third...weird); interior is in excellent condition; exterior, the clearcoat is failing on a quarter panel and the hood...typical ford paint job. Great other than that. Functional problems - interior - drivers electric window needs hand assist rolling up. Front passenger door opener does not work from the inside. Both probably fixable if one takes the door panels off. Mechanical: runs and drives fine, BUT it has issues that need $300 in parts and someone who can work on a car...all the u tube videos look straight forward...this is the story: It sat for approx 6 years from the previous owner; the coolant was rusty sludge....I flushed it about 20 times and installed a NEW radiator. The water pump needs replacing...apparently the fins disintegrate after sitting like that so it doesnt move the coolant around PLUS the thermostat is frozen in the open position I believe...net effect of the therm is the engine doesnt warm up so runs rich under normal driving; this condition then clogged the cat....the cat is now mitigated so will need a new one before deq time; OEM are $160 or add ons are $50. If idling / slow driving, the coolant not moving makes it run hot...water pump is $60 (timing belt is $15 which I would do at the same time). Thermostat is $15. So less than $300 and a day's work and it would be good, so I am told by my mechanic.However for normal driving it works fine for me as is. AC works....its an automatic / overdrive. It has $300 in BRAND NEW Les Schwab tires. Tags are good thru 2/16.It is dirty as it needs after-winter cleaning and I havent been able to do it. I can have it detailed for $100 if you wish (add to price)....Clear title. I think thats everything..... Again, I think I have it priced fairly for what it is.... Voice / text five 0 three six 9 7 seven one one 6 ..oh yeah...new brakes on the front too....new heater motor... EDIT:..I let my buddy that is a mechanic take the car for a day to check it out as I DO NOT want to screw anyone...the car makes too much exhaust when it is cold / humid out, like in the mornings - he checked it out and told me he thinks it is an intake manifold gasket; it is allowing coolant to be sucked into the fuel mixture which makes excessive steam in the exhaust. It is niot the head gasket as the oil is perfect and doesn't change. The part is $10 but just another operation that needs to be done. Doesn't do it in the warm summer weather.The car has super low miles for its age and is in good cosmetic condition...she just needs TLC. He said the sitting forever really was hard on these mechanical issues.LAST EDIT: ..I drive this car 20 miles a day and it runs and drives great once it warms up (30 seconds - minute)..Probly help it to throw a set of plugs / wires on it as they are still factory original...lol. ...next school year I will not be needing to make these drives so I no longer need an economical car (can drive my truck)...will just need the parts before the next renewal....9 months or so.
