Price is SLIGHTLY negotiable: Germans refer to this car as the IRON PIG, lovingly. The engine is considered the back bone of Mercedes up to 2005. The OM602 engine is by far the Rolex of diesel engines. This 1992 Mercedes 2.5L diesel has been my project for close to 5 years now. I drive this car to and from work when the weather permits. I purchased the car from a elderly man here in NJ. The car needed engine work due to common issues with the EGR (exhaust gas recirculation system). The 1991 & 1992 models came with an EGR band aid from Mercedes to meet California EPA standards. This car no longer has the EGR system, it was removed and converted to the traditional wastegate system. The original T25 (.48a/r) turbocharger was replaced with a high flow Garrett GT2560r (.68a/r) to allow the engine to breath properly. The turbocharger has an adjustable boost controller for the wastegate. The car is completely road worthy, drives straight, starts in zero degree weather and runs smooth as glass. The transmission shifts firm and was replaced prior to my ownership with a genuine Mercedes reman unit. The car currently has over 200,000 miles and has been serviced accordingly under my watch. This car is clean, there is some rust on the driver front quarter panel, nothing major. Overall this is a 7 footer that means you stand 7 feet away and it looks perfect. If you come close you will find some dings and dents. This is a clean daily driver and has been loved by a true enthusiast. Drive it anywhere with no issues. History of the Mercedes W124 with the OM602: The W124 is a mid-sized vehicle platform. Due to the high cost of German engineering and build quality, the W124 was designed to last many miles, with awards actually given and worn by high mileage versions. Front suspension uses a separate spring and damper with a rubber top mount. The rear suspension of the W124 features the Mercedes multi-link axle introduced in 1982 with the Mercedes 190 and which is now standard on many modern cars. Estate cars (and optionally, saloons and coupes) had Citroen-like self-leveling rear suspension with suspension struts rather than shock absorbers, gas-filled suspension spheres to provide damping and an under bonnet pressurizing pump. Unlike the traditional Citroën application Mercedes opted for a fixed ride height and employed rear coil springs to maintain the static ride height when parked. The R129 SL roadster was based on the W124 platform, and in return, W124 was equipped with one of the roadster's engines, which comprised the 500E. Much of the 124's engineering and many of its features were advanced automotive technology at its introduction, incorporating innovations that have been adopted throughout the industry.[6] It had one of the lowest coefficient of drag (Cd) of any vehicle of the time (0.28 for the 200/200D model for the European market with 185/65 R15 tires) due to its aerodynamic body, that included plastic molding for the undercarriage to streamline airflow beneath the car, reducing fuel consumption and wind noise. It had a single windscreen wiper that had an eccentric mechanism at its base that extended the wiper's reach to the top corners of the windscreen (more than if it had traveled in a simple arc). The saloon/sedan, coupés and convertibles had optional rear headrests that would fold down remotely to improve rearward visibility when required. The successor of the OM617 engine family was the newly developed straight-5 diesel automobile engine OM602 from Mercedes-Benz used from 1980s up to 2002. With some Mercedes-Benz 250D/E250D diesels exceeding 500,000 or 1,000,000 miles, it is considered to be one of the most reliable engines ever produced, a success which is only comparable with the famous OM617 engine. The 5-cylinder OM602 was succeeded by the four-valve engine OM605 (E250D 20V) and later the OM612 and OM647 with turbocharger and common rail direct injection (C/E/ML 270CDI).
