Offered for Sale is a 1950 DeSoto 2 door 6 cylinder CONVERTIBLE - - yes, that's right a convertible 1950 Desoto. Never heard of one? Maybe that's because this particular car is reported to be extremely rare. Here's some information provided by a world known US auto auction house: "1950 DeSoto Custom Convertible is one of less than 400 convertible models produced by DeSoto Motor Car Company........ It's a remarkable example of an original Desoto custom Convertible. According to Marlin Crider, member of the national DeSoto Club and 1950's DeSoto expert, there are only 12 known 1950 DeSoto Custom convertibles in existence today." Due to the rareness of the convertible Desoto in this year, I have seen one of these cars that had been fully restored and sold at auction for around $65,000. OK so now that we all know what this is let me give you the details on this particular car. I have owned the car for over 25 years - maybe closer to 30 years. I bought it in the 1970's from a guy who moved it here to the northeast from the southwest. This was a southwest car which is obvious from the quality of the sheet metal and limited amount of rust. So I've kept the car in weather controlled storage for all this time and I had great plans of getting to this restoration but every year some other life event got in the way and here we are over 25 years later and I have still not completed the restoration. Now with some medical issues I know I will never get to finish the car so I need this car to go to someone who will take this great and unique car and take it to the finish line! The car has 74,600 on the original speedometer and I believe that all the numbers on the various pieces of the car match. Did I pump any money or time into this car - oh yes - here's what has been done. A complete engine restoration was done a few years back by a professional in Connecticut. Very nice (and costly) job on the engine restoration which was complete. Carburetor, starter, generator all professionally rebuilt. New engine wires, belts, hoses, engine mounts, etc. etc. Sad part is I never even got to run the engine beyond the testing done by the rebuilder so the engine is essentially new. Lots of new parts never used but ready for someone to install. The body and frame of this car are generally solid given the age of this car but of course there is a little rust here and there as expected. I have not restored any other portions of the car, for example, the brakes have not been touched. Trans and rear end have not been touched or tested. Interior needs work - I believe most everything if not everything is there just needs to be restored. The car is a 6 volt positive ground and it has not been converted. It could use wiring throughout so it will need new harnesses. Parts wise, I believe that this car is about as complete as you can find in a rare restorable 1950 Desoto convertible. Bench seats front and back but no seat belts :) The car may be missing a few smaller items here and there but all the major pieces are present and accounted for as shown in the photos. You must get a look at this car before you buy it. I have it stored in New York State. I prefer not to sell it without you coming to look it over and give it a thorough going over. I can show you the car, shop manuals and other literature, spare parts, new parts, etc. that all come along with this car. You will have to arrange for transportation or I may be able to help you load it out if you take it with a trailer. This car is almost 65 years old. It needs a good caring home and would make a terrific project for you and your kids or your friends and when you are done you will have a very valuable and rare vehicle. Answers to YOUR frequently asked questions: 1) Yes, the car has a fluid drive transmission and clutch. Both are untested but portions of the clutch are new.2) No, the car is not currently roadworthy as you can see from the photos.3) The original radiator comes with the car but it is untested and has not been restored.4) The dash has been stripped and is ready for paint as shown in the photos. Speedometer is there but most of the gauges were not good and need to be replaced but relatively easy to find on EBAY.5) I have NY registration materials/title and can transfer it over to you. This car is sold "AS-IS WHERE-IS". You can see from the pictures that it needs restoration and will need assembly and various parts and repairs in order to be operable and street legal. There is absolutely no warranty for any portion of this sale - all sales are final. That's it - ask me questions before you buy or make an offer as all sales are final. Thanks for looking at this listing.
