This car is a Street Rod recreation based on a 1930’s Canton, Ohio bulletproof Police car. The 1930’s car, known as the “Flying Squadron”, was built expressly for the Canton Police Department and served the department for many years. The car was constructed due to the violent strikes at the Steel Mills in Canton, Oh during the late 1930’s. Although, built to protect the Police during the violent strikes, the car was not utilized to any real capacity. The car’s most noteworthy role came in the summer of 1958; when it was utilized to rout two bank robbers from a farmhouse in nearby Louisville. The robbers held the farmhouse inhabitants hostage and had no intention of surrendering. The armored car, sporting the “ Flying Squadron” decal on its doors, charged up to the home and fired tear gas canisters from the gun ports that are mounted in the one inch plus thick windows. Almost immediately, everyone came out of the farmhouse with their hands in the air, thus putting an end to the thieves’ sinister plans. The bulletproof sedan’s windows only open a few inches, due to the protrusion of the gun ports. In the heat of summer, the sedan’s interior can become unbearably hot from the sun and a straight eight engine. This car was built in the days before air conditioning, so the only relief came from two fans mounted on the dashboard. The Canton Police Department’s pride cost around $800 when purchased in the late 1930’s. The car was equipped with 3000 lbs. of 10-gauge armor plating, at a cost of one dollar per pound. This brought the cost of the car to almost $4,000 dollars, a huge sum of money in those days. The bulletproof plating was resistant up to 45-caliber ammunition. The car also had bullet resistant inner tubes in the tires, and two-way radios in the trunk. The rear seat area included an arsenal of shotguns, Tommy guns, gas masks, and tear gas grenades. During World War II, Eleanor Roosevelt is said to have ridden in the car from the Akron airport to Canton to deliver an address at a local gathering. This Historical car is not an active Police unit and has no affiliation with the Canton Police Department. It serves as a tribute to the original “Flying Squadron” automobile. 1939 Pontiac Silver Streak-Police car street rod recreation of the 1930's Flying Squadron Canton, Ohio Police Car, 2 door, Pontiac 455, turbo 400 auto, velour interior and mahogany wood running boards.
