William L. "Bill" Mitchell was an automobile designer who was recruited by Harley Earl to join the Art and Colour Section of General Motors in 1935. Mitchell is responsible for creating or influencing the design of over 72.5 million automobiles produced by GM, including such landmark vehicles as the 1949 Cadillac with its P38 influenced fins, the 1955-57 Chevrolet Bel Air, the 1961-76 Corvette Stingray, and his swan song, the 1980-1985 Cadillac Seville. Since it was the last design of consequence that General Motors design chief Bill Mitchell oversaw, Wayne Kady’s 1980 Cadillac Seville is thought by some to be the ultimate expression of Mitchell’s design philosophy. No doubt Mitchell was a fan of what he called the “London look”, and the ’80 Seville had that in spades: a classic vertical grille, a bustle shaped rear end, a raked C pillar and a long hood. When accused of borrowing the bustle-back from a contemporary Lincoln, Mitchell reportedly got indignant and said that he stole it from Rolls-Royce, not the cross-town competition in Dearborn. The second generation Seville made its debut in the fall of 1979 to great fanfare and controversy. Although there were decent production numbers for this body’s 6 year run, very few were saved by collectors, mainly because of the popularity of the midsized coupes of this era. This is proving to have been a big oversight. On any given day you can find a nice low mile Eldorado of this generation, but a pristine low mile Seville is very scarce. And Cadillac collectors have noticed, with the demand for a nice second generation Seville more than doubling the price over the last five years. This gorgeous low mile, all original Seville was purchased recently by my 87 year old father, who has always driven Cadillacs and lamented the sale of his series 2 Seville in the 1990s. Unfortunately though, after recent triple bypass surgery, and while he is in great overall health, he (we) decided his driving days are setting. After scouring Hemmings, eBay, and Craigslist, he found this car local. It was the pride and joy of a local personage who had two cars, this Seville and a Lincoln Towncar; the Seville was her go to Sunday church car. Dad acquired the car from her estate; he dealt with her nephew who as a professional mechanic, had always taken care of her cars. This Seville has always been garaged, has always had a battery tender attached, has always been started regularly, and has always been serviced regularly. One interesting detail, look for the image of the door jamb service sticker that shows a 1991 oil change at 21xxx miles. Freshly Serviced: After purchase, we took the car to my mechanic and had him do a comprehensive service. Here is a list of what we had him do: · Replaced the master-brake cylinder. · Brakes themselves were in tip-top shape but we did a complete brake fluid flush after replacing the master brake cylinder. · New front shocks. · New exhaust system from the exhaust pipe back, including a new muffler and resonator. · New OEM power antenna motor. · New plugs and a general tune-up. · New tires. The tires on the car were like new but they were installed in 2009 and had developed a flat spot on one tire. · Oil and filter change. · Coolant was like new so we didn’t drain or flush. · Belts and hoses were like new so we left them alone. · Battery is good. Wiper blades are good. Every light works. All instruments work. Mileage computer works. Everything works. Remarkable. Mechanically, this car is ready to drive across the country. The AC works great, the climate control system works as new, the cruise control works as new, the optional radio/cassette player sounds great, not a rattle or hum. However I noticed that when using the cassette, one channel will go in and out. It might be that the head needs to be cleaned with a Q-Tip and alcohol. Or it could have been the included cassette of Patsy Cline; I don’t have another cassette to test. Visually the car is like new. It is in spectacular condition. Not a door ding, scratch, the panels are laser straight; there has never been any body damage and there is zero rust or corrosion. All the light lenses are clear without fade. It is in as close to mint condition as you will ever find. I have seen newer cars with the same mileage that could not hold up to comparison; the car is in remarkable condition. Even the cigarette lighters have never been used. The car’s interior smells like a new car, the leather is spotless and supple. All the glass, rubber grommets, and seals are like the day they left the factory. No scratches to the all original glass, all the rubber bits are in fantastic shape. The last thing to mention would be how visually, the car is a really beautiful color. The same can be said about the leather, which comes very close to matching the exterior hue. I spent a lot of time looking up the paint codes and the paint code WA-8240 was called WOODLAND HAZE METALLIC. The interior color I believe was called MEDIUM COGNAC. I decoded the RPO codes online from the Cadillac forum and the interior code corresponds to four different options. As two were for an Opel, which is GM in Europe, and one was for a Holden, GM built in Australia; I deduced the MEDIUM COGNAC would be the correct color name for the US. Please see the entire list of the included GM RPO codes and notes that are at the end of this listing. You will see that there are some codes that show as “No Match”, I did my best to find out what those codes corresponded to but in searching the Cadillac forum, found other owners having the same issue so assume that without further investigation, we will have to accept that we tried. A long listing, yes. I tried to highlight each area of interest, so for those who aren’t as obsessive, wouldn’t have to wade thru the minutia. For those that enjoy the details, well here you go! It is a really nice car that is worth spending the time on. Price: Well I know we spent the dollars to acquire the best but Dad is open to reasonable offers. This Cool Caddy is in beautiful condition throughout. Underrated for years, the 1985 Seville has been deemed "exceptional" in Hemmings Motor News, December, 2010. Here are some excerpts from the article: Bustleback Beauty - Cadillac SevilleBeneath the Seville's controversial styling lies what was arguably GM's most advanced chassis to date. Let's take this one for a spin. The door opening is fairly narrow for larger folks, but the super-light steering makes for easy cornering and handling around town. The flat, plush, button-tuck seats actually keep you in place very well while the car rolls ever so slightly around the bends.What the four-wheel disc brake system lacks in pedal feel, it more than makes up for in actual stopping ability; the car stops quickly and effectively, without any drama. And if the Seville owners are to be believed, a 20-22 MPG highway average is regularly obtained. Suddenly, the benefits of 135hp, a transaxle with overdrive and a smaller front end to the wind start to prove themselves in a very positive way.The leather-wrapped tilt wheel helps enormously when you're getting in. Head and shoulder room are, surprisingly, in the league of the previous Seville; the styling pretensions of the bustleback model lead you to believe it would be bigger inside, but it's not. The completely flat floorpan does help, however. This car is not all rusty or anything, it is a nice straight car that has been taken care of over the years, but the paint has faded and the clear coat is peeling. All of the Chrome is in Excellent Condition. It is showing 30K miles and I truly believe that its Original miles but with it being a 5 Digit Odometer I have no way to tell for sure, but this car is just about as clean as can be. Overview of the Car Well this is one that I bet you didn’t think you would find here on eBay! If you feel this way, then you are like I was when seeing this car for the first time. It is breathtaking! Very nicely preserved and nearly all original example of Cadillac’s finest in 1981! This example was primarily owned and garaged in Virginia since new, up until 2010 and owned by car collectors since then, including me. Based upon a critical view of the car, it’s evident the miles are truly 55,300 because the interior is nearly new and all mint. There is not even the slightest of wear on the driver’s carpeted factory Cadillac floor mat, as it was always covered by another mat during use. The steering wheel leather is perfect, the dash and all trim and gauges are as new, and the seating and headliner are amazing and also “as new”. Mechanically, it seems to have been well maintained throughout its life. It was also garaged, and it shows. The paint is mostly original, except for the Bordeaux Red, which was repainted by the former collector owner to a high quality lustrous finish which is factory correct. There isn’t anything to complain about with this car, as the V-8 engine starts quickly, runs smoothly, and drives as a Cadillac should, without hesitation or any other issues. It runs on all 8 cylinders all of the time and all service is up to date. All services have been performed by Cadillac, and the car has had brake, steering, oil, and transmission fluids exchanged and all other systems checked out thoroughly. It has new tires and a 4 wheel alignment. In addition, the entire fuel injection system has been updated, including new injectors, fuel pump, fuel filters, and fuel sending unit along with a full tune up, and full brake service, front and rear, including master cylinder, brake booster, rotors and pads. Front Shocks have been replaced, along with power steering pump and idler arm, upper ball joints, CV Boots, and front axles. Next, the Air Conditioning System serviced including a new control board which currently blows ice cold, and/or heat is hot. Transmission and Motor Mounts have been replaced, and exhaust system from the catalytic converter back is relatively new. Alternator, belts, hoses, and battery are also recently replaced. Trunk and Hood shocks have also been replaced. Next, based upon the extensive service, I am happy to report the car drives AWESOME. It starts quickly every time, and best of all, it doesn’t leak, rattle, stumble, stutter, or otherwise, make any other weird noises! It was updated in many areas due the age of the car to ensure many more years of reliable service. Performance of the Car We’ve already described the running and driving of the car, which is to specifications and very solid, quiet, with no noises, rattles, hesitations, or other issues. The 8 Cylinder Engine pulls the car around very well. We run 89 octane that is Ethanol free in the car with additives to the fuel for optimal performance. With regards to the electrical accessories, all of these perform flawlessly and work as new, except for the power antenna. The antenna can be lowered or raised manually. A new replacement unit will be included with the sale, but not installed on the car. The stereo radio and cassette works great and all speakers are alive with sound. All of the lighting works, inside and out, along with the factory illuminated entry system and fiber optic lamp monitors. Power windows, locks, steering, brakes, mirrors, seats, and all other aspects are perfect and work as new! During my time with the car, I have primarily only used it at local Cadillac car shows. It was most recently part of a local Cadillac club meeting in Burlington, North Carolina, and received rave reviews there from a very discriminating audience! We drove it round trip approximately 250 miles with absolutely no issues! History of the Seville – 2nd Generation This model was made by Cadillac between 1980-1985, so the basic architecture is solid and well proven. It was equipped with the 6.0 L engine mated with variable displacement fuel injection due to the strict requirements of the CAFE (US REGULATION) for fuel economy back in the 1980’s that required better gas mileage on these land yachts. The former owner had the V-8-6-4 feature disconnected in 1983 and has run strictly on 8 cylinders all of the time ever since. The car will seat 4-5 passengers very comfortably! · Overall Length: 204.8” · Shipping Weight: 4,167 lbs. It is really a floating living room. It garners attention from every direction when it is on the road. When not in use, it is garaged, day and night. As with any 34 year old car, you have at least a few things on the list worth mentioning that could use attention at some point: Power antenna doesn’t work but can be lowered and raised manually. A new one is included with the sale that is the GM factory approved replacement part.The fiberglass filler on the driver’s side rear is cracked as shown in the photos, but this may be easily replaced/repaired.Some chips in the paint from 34 years of use are evident, but very minor. They are visible in the many photos taken.Apart from these, there isn’t anything stopping anyone from simply enjoying the car, “as is”, as I have. There hasn’t been any body damage on the car, meaning no accidents or fender benders. It appears solid and very clean, polished, and presentable. This 1992 Cadillac Seville is in amazing condition. It has the classic pearl white color that is synonymous with Cadillac. And the cream leather interior makes a gorgeous combination with the exterior. It only has a little over 70000 miles on it, and it run very smoothly. It also has a very quick pick up. Since it is over 20 years old, there is some wear and tear. The interior is in great shape, but the leather on the driver's seat is a bit worn and has cracks, however it's still in one piece, and overall pretty good condition. There is also a small crack above the front license plate, but it is not very noticeable and can be fixed. The front left signal lamp is cracked, but it is still in working condition. I am the second owner of the car, and I purchased it from a friend. It was kept in very good care, which is why it is in excellent condition.
