The Eldorado was a word with many meanings. It was chosen as the name to adore an upscale car that was built by Cadillac to celebrate its Golden Anniversary in 1952. Mary-Ann Zukosky, a secretary in the merchandising department, participated in a in-house competition and suggested the name. Eldorado was derived from the Spanish words %26apos;el dorado%26apos; meaning %26apos;golden one%26apos;. The name had first been used by the chief of a South American Indian tribe. The story was that his followers and tribe would sprinkle his body with gold dust on ceremonial occasions. He would later cleanse himself by diving into a lake.Another story states the name represents a legendary but undiscovered city in South America filled with riches. Many European adventurers have long sought for this city including England%26apos;s Sir Walter Raleigh.%26apos;Palm Spring Life%26apos; magazine claimed the name Eldorado was derived from a Californian resort that was frequently visited by General Motors executives. The name of the resort located in Coachella Valley was the Eldorado Country Club. The biggest change during this generation of Eldorado was the reintroduction of a convertible to the model in 1984-the first since the 1976 model. Priced at $31,286, 3,300 were sold. The 1985 model year was again largely unchanged as Cadillac braced for a drastic redesign for the 1986 model. All Cadillac Eldorados of this generation had well-equipped interiors, with plush leather seats, climate control, and more. The long hood / short deck proportions are quite different from the more iconic Eldorados of the 1950s and 1960s, but the look has actually aged quite well.
