For sale is my 1971 Buick Skylark Convertible. It has a 455 cubic inch engine with a TH400 automatic transmission and a Quadrajet 4 barrel carb. It has a power top with a hard glass rear window. The car drives and sounds fantastic. I bought it in 2012 from a family friend who had acquired it in 2009 fresh off restoration at a Barrett Jackson auction. I've maintained it, driven it, and enjoyed it ever since then. I have saved all receipts and have documentation from the prior owner for the restoration, including photos of the car stripped down to the bone and on the auction block at Barrett Jackson. The car does not have, and does not appear to have ever had, any rust issues. The interior is black and in excellent condition with no tears or rips anywhere. I recently replaced the instrument bezel and added an OEM style tachometer instead of the broken old clock. The lights in the dash have been upgraded to LED. The heat and A/C both work. The stereo is modern but retro style and has an AUX input to connect to a phone and is hooked up to 5.25 inch Pioneer speakers in the kickpanels. It has outputs for a subwoofer if you feel so inclined. I also have the original AM radio, kick panels, and steering wheel in case the buyer wants to make it look like it did when it rolled off the line in 1971. They will be included with the car. I give the interior a 9/10 with the only points deducted for some fading in the color of the carpet. The paint and chrome are in great condition, though not without a few minor blemishes here and there. The imperfections are not visible unless you get up pretty close. Certainly no dents or wrinkles. The body is completely straight and the under carriage is clean. The glass is very good with only a couple of small chips (no cracking). I give the exterior of the car an 8/10. It is not a museum piece but I would not hesitate to park it at any car show. I get "thumbs up" wherever I go. You can proudly drive this car anywhere. I drive the car at least two times a week and more if I can. The prior owner did not drive it much and many of the issues that I have addressed were related to the car just sitting. The miles on the odometer are most likely inaccurate. As mentioned, the car was completely restored in 2009. That said, there are probably fewer than 5k miles on the car since 2009. Within the last two months, I replaced nearly all of the gaskets, seals, hoses, and grommets so that the engine does not drip oil. It's got a brand new alternator, thermostat, water pump, starter, battery, transmission mounts, motor mounts, and harmonic balancer. The car was also tuned and all of the fluids replaced. I have all receipts. It starts right up and runs like a champ. It is powerful and fast but also a comfortable cruiser. I love this car and will be just fine keeping it if it doesn't sell. I have a clean Georgia title that I can sign over to the buyer. The buyer is responsible for picking the car up or having it shipped. Cars like this 1968 Buick Skylark are affordable V8 fun that deliver more luxury, more comfort, and just as much performance as a comparable Chevelle, all for thousands less. Look around and I doubt you'll find a cleaner A-body with factory A/C than this! The turquoise color is pretty darned close to the original code K Aqua Mist, and we have to admit that we love the look on this car. With the bright white vinyl top, it has a very upbeat look that's still grown-up, perfect for the sporting Buick. Styling was all-new in 1968, and the dramatic sweeping crease that runs through the fenders, doors, and quarter panels is designed to emulate the "sweep-spear" styling of the 1940s and '50s. It really works well here, especially with clean, straight bodywork that doesn't let any ripples or misaligned panels get in the way of the look. For a Buick, there's a minimal amount of trim, which was optional, letting the clean, nicely restored bodywork speak for itself. Both bumpers fit well with nice chrome, and it's kind of nice to see that they didn't bother to try to dress this one up as a fake GS or something like that. Twin chrome strips down the trunk give it an upscale look and all the stainless trim has been buffed up to look great. You won't find many of these that have been treated as well as this one has. The bright white vinyl interior has a lot of new pieces and a few original bits, all combining to make a comfortable, inviting driving environment. The white upholstery is complemented by black carpets and dashboard, so it's not overwhelming, and with a fold-down center armrest, it's easy to get comfortable in the big Buick. A unique steering wheel should be familiar to long-time Buick fans, and the gauges have cool white faces that were way ahead of their time. The secondary controls have a brushed stainless applique and it's nice to see that the A/C is fully functional with good old R12 inside. There's a modern AM/FM/CD stereo head unit in the dash and it was neatly installed so nothing was cut or mangled, and we especially like the Skylark's ornate door panels that recall the decorative pieces from the 1940s. There's also a big trunk that's tidy and clean and has nothing to hide. Buick's 350 cubic inch V8 is all about torque, and this one with its two-barrel carburetor is a fantastic runner. Sure, you could upgrade to a 4-barrel, but I bet you wouldn't feel the difference and it's so smooth and easy to drive, I'd be afraid of losing that user-friendly nature. It's pretty original, with Dante Red paint on the block and a big air cleaner up top, but a weekend of cleaning things up would pay big dividends. It appears that the A/C system has some recent service work and it offers a nice V8 rumble from the single exhaust system. An automatic transmission was the most popular choice in the Skylark, which really is a luxury car first and a sporty car second, and with highway-friendly gears out back, you can cruise for hours without feeling fatigued. The suspension is supple, the steering is smooth, and with recent 205/75/15 radials on original Buick Road Wheels, it looks great and handles beautifully. The 350 cubic inch V8 is original to the car and is very strong, the styling is handsome and original, and the way thid cars drive is incredibly pleasant. In fact, it may very well be the best driving Buick we've ever featured. So if you're looking for an old ragtop that doesn't put a lot of demands on its driver and stands a bit apart from the more familiar Chevelles and GTOs, this 1-owner, all-original survivor 1970 Skylark convertible is worth a closer look. Basic black works rather well on the conservative Skylark. And the amazing thing about this car, is that all of the paint is original. It's not perfect, of course, but there's plenty of character and patina and you could easily enjoy the car as-is for years without giving it a second thought. The sheetmetal underneath is in good order, showing no signs of any past wrecks, and the Buick styling for 1970 was a home-run, just as it was for all GM divisions. The simple unadorned bodywork fits together well and doesn't need add-ons like spoilers or stripes to make its statement. The chrome and stainless trim is original and in good condition, another rarity for a vehicle of this vintage. The heavy chrome bumpers are straight and haven't been bashed or used to "park by feel" and all the original emblems are still in place where they belong. The interior is also original and 45 years old, and with that in mind, it's pretty impressive. Convertibles in particular are hard on interiors because of UV damage, but the black vinyl seats are in good condition with only a few signs of use. The carpets are a bit faded and worn, but we'll leave it to you to decide whether they warrant replacing. The gauges cover the basics but Buick gave Skylark owners a luxurious look with wood appliques on the dash as well. The original AM/FM radio is still in the dash, meaning the original owner showed great resolve and patience by never upgrading it. That unique steering wheel is pure 1970s but it isn't cracked or split. Overhead, there's a black power convertible top that still looks great and it disappears under a neat-fitting black vinyl boot. The spacious trunk is neatly outfitted with a correct mat and full-sized spare tire. Buick's 350 cubic inch V8 didn't share parts with its corporate siblings, which is perhaps why it has a unique sound and a very fat torque curve. This is the numbers matching 2-barrel model, but having driven both the 2- and 4-barrel versions, the difference in power is negligible on the road. It does have proper Dante Red paint on the block and correct decals on the air cleaner, so it presents rather well. Features like power steering and power brakes mean that this Skylark rides and handles like a Buick should and it has a great V8 burble from the single tailpipe out back. The TH350 3-speed automatic transmission bangs off quick, unobtrusive shifts and with 2.73 gears in back, it makes a fantastic highway car that you'll be eager to take on road trips. Have video of engine rebuild and engine running. Not hooked up to the new gas tank and new fuel level assembly at this time. Currently runs on clear line from quart gas cup to new fuel pump. Spent a lot of time and money on engine. Valve covers are color matched to original color, the numbers on the VIN match the engine #s. Tires in good shape, original rims not mounted but on property. I spent over a year working on the car and I have lost interest in finishing it. It was too big a project for me, alone, at 73 yrs. . . Clevet bearings and good rings, rod bearings, main, all new, cam 3/4 race mild cam from Summit racing in McDonough GA. Engine block was in good shape, vat dipped, and cleaned. Cylinder wall in good shape, dingle-berry provided final finish for new rings. Plastic gauge at 3/1000 checked. Engine probably has 2 hours running time. Most of the pictures are the actual work in progress. The d/s rear quarter panel had some rust and was replaced with a new quarter panel made in Canada and shipped to me in Atlanta. You can note the green was the original color of the car. The kevelar bondo is finished and painted red in several of the pictures. Body work that was done and is not perfect; it is not a show car at this time. Re-chromed bumpers were $900 each (times 2) front and back. Single piece replacement metal floor, (see pictures) and other items ran up the tab. rubber seal for trunk and hood are on the car or in new package, not sure which. Painted metal flake red with white stripes. Have replacement top hydraulics with new $100 lines, Misplaced two metal parts to make the top go up. Would be easy to find replacement as these parts do no wear out. This was probably the final nail in my losing interest. They may be in the shop someplace but I could not find them. Old people do not do well with long projects and then when they lose parts it tends to destroy their limited enthusiasm. Thus it is for sale. . . Main items remaining: find two metal pieces for top, new top, install driver’s seat (in shop not original) and seat belts, hook up shift linkage (was considering floor hookup), install side panels on doors, have new white vinyl material already mounted. Run new fuel lines, fill brake reservoir with fluid. Some trim items, rear view mirror, side mirrors, swap wheel if you want to original rims. This car was tagged and insured in Georgia in 2013, engine and serial number match see VIN number. Sold with a bill of sale and previous tag receipt from Georgia, no title. With a handsome red paint job and an innovative 225 cubic inch V6 under the hood, this Skylark is a right-sized car that will make you smile every time you slide behind the wheel. The well-proportioned body is a little more curvaceous than your garden-variety Chevelle and not quite as bulky as a GTO, and the bright red finish compliments the image that Buick was trying to cultivate. Bodywork and paint are in decent shape, having been repainted red (original color was gold) some years ago but it's obvious that this was always a clean, well-maintained car that didn't need major surgery during the restoration. More evidence can be found in how nicely the big hood and deck lid fit, and you know there are no replacement panels for these cars, so that's all General Motors steel on there. Buick was done with gratuitous chrome on their cars as well, with just bright, shiny bumpers and a few pieces of trim contrasting with the paint, and it's all nicely finished. A cool ribbed tail panel frames the taillights, adding some interest and a distinctive look to the back of the car, and the sleek grille isn't too ornate, just simple and effective on the big Buick ragtop. The interior is just so nice that it has probably been restored in original style black vinyl, and there's stretch-out room for six with the wide bench seats. Crisp door panels with correct badges like these are probably difficult to find and the carpets are in excellent condition. The modern Pilot steering wheel isn't original, but it is a sporty leather-wrapped piece that fits this car's personality perfectly, and the slender shifter lever is straight out of the era of skinny ties and pointy shoes. You'll note that this car has been upgraded with an AM/FM/CD stereo that sounds great, as well as a set of bright red floor mats that work rather well in the bright red ragtop. Overhead there's a black power convertible top that stows under a matching black vinyl boot and out back you'll find a neatly finished luggage compartment with a full-sized spare and jack assembly. Under the hood you'll find Buick's Fireball V6, which was a unique powerplant in 1965. Like all the automakers of the period, they worked to balance performance and economy, and the V6 offered plenty of performance from 225 cubic inches and plenty of thrift thanks to a single barrel carburetor. Fireball is a name from Buick's past, dating to 1938, and it's just as apt here with the bright Dante Red air cleaner and valve covers, a favorite Buick engine color for decades. Whatever the name, however, the smooth-running V6 moves the relatively lightweight Skylark easily, and you'll enjoy the muted soundtrack from the recent dual exhaust system. The rest of the engine bay seems like a combination of excellent original components and new equipment, and this is such a clean original car, it's awfully hard to find the line between the two. The transmission shifts smoothly and there's a set of highway-friendly gears out back that makes this a superlative cruiser that won't break the bank. With factory wire wheel covers and 205/75/14 whitewall tires, it has just the right upscale look. It would be a mistake to overlook this Buick if you're looking for a fun, affordable '60s ragtop to drive this summer.
