EXTERIOR COLOR: ODOMETER READING: 44066 INTERIOR COLOR : VEHICLE FEATURES & OPTIONS AM/FM Radio, Vinyl Interior, Front Disc Brakes, Power Steering, Seatbelts-Front, Seatbelts-Rear SELLER REMARKS You wouldn't think that a Buick Riviera would make a great pro-street car, yet here it is. This 1972 Buick Riviera is not only a glamorous "boattail" but it packs a 528 cubic inch monster of a motor and the suspension to back it up. If you've ever heard the phrase "iron fist in a silk glove," this Riv is the rolling embodiment of it. We know these Rivieras are polarizing; you either love them or hate them. But I don't think anyone will be doing any arguing with this brute, which is not only scary fast, but beautifully finished. The dark charcoal over black paint is suitably elegant for the luxurious Riv and thanks to a high-quality repaint not too long ago, it has an elegant and appropriate look. Sure, the modified air cleaner sticking up through the hood kind of gives it away, but at a glance, this car looks like a heavyweight fighter dressed up in a tuxedo. The break in the two-tone paint scheme follows the dramatic fender line, which, itself is a nod to the great Buicks of the '40s whose "sweep-spear" styling transformed the automotive landscape for years. Fit and finish is excellent, with good gaps all around, a hood that fits flush, and that unique deck lid sitting just where it should. And for fun, someone added three "venti-ports" on the front fender, another nod to Buicks of the past. Add in some sparking chrome bumpers, some bright stainless trim, and you have a Riviera that's as impressive to look at as it is to drive. Remarkably, the interior is mostly stock, and aside from the six-point roll cage and Simpson harnesses, still luxurious enough to be called a Buick. Buckets and a console are desirable options on the Riviera and the wide bucket seats are as comfortable today as they were in 1972 thanks to OEM upholstery that looks exactly right. The driver is surrounded by a vast array of gauges, a big upgrade from the speedometer and fuel gauge offered by the factory instruments, all the better to monitor the giant big block up front. A Hurst shifter has been neatly integrated into the original console and the woodgrain adds some warmth to the otherwise all-business interior. Decent original carpets, a full-sized back seat, and even the original AM/FM radio give this car a very stock look. The trunk is massive and nicely finished, although it's mostly filled with the fuel cell and battery, which move critical weight rearward. That big, Dante Red engine is a 528 cubic inch V8 built by the legendary Al Moody (you can ignore the sticker on the radiator shroud). TA Performance parts were used throughout the build, including the cam, aluminum heads, crankshaft, roller rockers, and a host of other goodies that make it combat-ready. Up top, there's a ProForm 4-barrel carburetor inhaling through custom snorkels fed by the former high-beam headlight holes. The engine bay is nicely dressed for show but it runs even better than it looks, although with 800+ horsepower on tap, that shouldn't be a surprise. The built TH400 3-speed automatic doesn't seem to mind the torque and feeds a reinforced Moser Ford 9-inch rear end with 4.10 gears on a limited slip. The thundering dual exhaust has cut-outs for the track, but nobody's going to mistake this for an old man's car. Handsome Torque Thrust wheels update the look a bit and wear 205/70/15 radials up front and giant Goodyear drag radials in back. Beautifully finished, incredibly fast, and just plain insane, this big Buick delivers the goods in every way, and if you want to make a statement, nothing says it better than an 800 horsepower luxury coupe. For many, the appeal of the smallest Buick can be explained by its big car comfort and power and Chevy-sized package, making for one formidable factory hot-rod. The "CMC" paint code on the cowl tag is for the tri-tone combination that was popular on '50s Buicks, sandwiching code M Seminole Red between code C Dover White top and side coves for a truly dazzling effect. No paint job in 1956 ever looked this good, which we can credit to modern paint technology, and the finish will probably look this good for years to come thanks to durable materials. It's clear someone did their homework, because this sucker fits together extremely well. And talk about chrome! That massive grille is composed of dozens of separate pieces, each of which was stripped, polished, plated, and reinstalled to create the grinning countenance that is the Buick front end. Impressive! Of course, it also includes the three "venti-ports" signifying a Special, plus the famous Buick sweep-spear whose shape is still seen in Buicks built today. The brand-new two-tone interior is nothing short of artwork. GM designers in the '50s were the best in the world, and this car shows you why. The black and red seats are wide and comfortable, of course, with flashy door panels to match and both the carpet and headliner are new. And as long as we're looking at the doors, note how the exterior paint wraps around the door jambs, a sure sign of a high-quality job. The red steering wheel is a nice touch and the wrap-around dash embraces chrome just as much as the front-end of the car does. The gauges are showing a bit of age but they do give you a complete view of the engine and the original Sonomatic AM radio still lives in the center of the dash with that incredibly ornate speaker grille below it. The trunk is obviously quite original, and reproduction trunk mats are widely available, so it would be easy to push it to the next level without a big investment. Buick's 322 cubic inch "Nailhead" V8 was standard across the line for the first time in 1956, meaning that the Special finally had the horsepower to match its big brothers. Nicely detailed when the car was restored, the engine wears Buick Turquoise paint and a stock air cleaner with a factory 2-barrel carburetor underneath. Still running its original generator, the car sticks to the factory specifications throughout and the radiator up front is new, so it runs nice and cool. Buick's Dynaflow transmission was a bit more sophisticated by 1956, but it's still impossibly smooth out on the road, where speed creeps up on you without anyone noticing. The suspension is commendably supple, and even with drum brakes all around, braking is confident. Optional full wheel covers are a nice upgrade, and it rides on G78-15 wide whites, just as it did when new. The Special gives you all the style of the Century at a fraction of the price. Like I said, if you like chrome, there aren't many better choices than this. Cars like this 1964 example are no longer bargain-priced leftovers, but first-rate collectables that also happen to be some of the best driving cars of the period. Bill Mitchell re-wrote the playbook with the Riviera, dumping everything that had made GM the biggest company in the world. No chrome, no fins, no extra flash, just an ultra-clean, perfectly proportioned personal luxury car that redefined an entire segment. Finished in correct code H Wedgewood Blue, this one captures the sophisticated and subdued elegance of the design, letting the many wonderful details do the talking instead. With a recent repaint, it is in outstanding condition, with nary even a door ding on its chrome-free flanks. Fit and finish are good, showing careful workmanship when the time came to bolt it back together. The chrome that does remain, including the delicate wrap-around bumpers, cool bombsight hood ornament, and faux intakes on the quarter panels, all looks original and is definitely up to the standards set by the rest of the car. Even in a pastel color, this is a car that gets noticed! It shouldn't be a surprise that a long line of A-list celebrities owned early Rivs, and the interior is certainly up to their standards. With a beautiful mixture of materials, it looks like an executive's office on the top floor in New York, and to give you some idea of how well-preserved this car is, most of the interior is original. The seat covers are in excellent condition, and we're guessing they've been replaced at some point, but everything else appears to be vintage 1964 and in very good condition. The instrument panel is a fantastic display of restraint, with lots of brushed stainless, big, round gauges, and simple angles that look right. Even the stubby chrome shifter is a little piece of art that not only looks great but falls easily to hand, reminding you that the Riv was built to be driven. Door panels are quite good save for some fading on the arm rests and the plush carpets provide a hushed interior ride. Options include factory A/C (which needs to be serviced), and an AM radio, which is ripe for an upgrade, because this is a car you're going to want to drive. Even the trunk is neatly finished and includes a full-sized spare. Buick knew that effortless performance was the key to the Riviera's success, so they made sure that there was plenty of torque on tap to move all that sheetmetal with ease. With 401 cubic inches and an advertised 465 pounds of torque (that's the '465' in Wildcat 465) it gave this personal luxury car the ability to humiliate some pretty serious machinery out on the street. The engine bay is clean and shows signs of life-long maintenance and no signs of abuse or even minor modifications, and we've confirmed that this is the car's original, numbers-matching engine. It's linked to Buick's unique Turbine 300 transmission which offers silky smooth shifts, while a set of 3.23 gears allows it to cruise across the desert towards Las Vegas at high speed with barely a whisper. A new Flowmaster dual exhaust system sounds just about right for the muscular Riv, and 225/75/15 whitewall radials are fitted along with flashy wire wheelcovers. Prices are moving on these awesome cars, and while it won't make you rich overnight, it'll certainly feel like it from behind the wheel.
