Buick advertised the car nationally as a high performance family sports car at an economical price. The drivetrain included Buick’s new for “68” 350 V8 with 10.25;1 compression and Quadrajet four-barrel carburetor producing 280 hp and 375 lb ft of torque mated to the two-speed Super Turbine 300 two speed automatic transmission. The California’s were available only as a pillar coupe with bench seat upholstery, full treatment including vinyl top, chrome molding package, GS emblems, special California scripts, chrome steel wheels and chrome air cleaner lid. This car was purchased from Sexton Buick-Olds in Tennessee, traveling only 8,640 actual miles from new, it is 100% original except for new redlines wide oval tires and battery. Description 1938 Buick Special Coupe This superb automobile has been lovingly cared for since original purchased on May 5, 1938 from Hudson Buick Co. Inc in Hudson N.Y. A beautiful mohair upholstery with rear jump seats adorn this unique car, some options included are a radio and clock (both working), banjo steering wheel, signal lights, Buick Master heater, amber driving lights and dual side mounted spares. The famous Dynaflash straight 8 engine and 3-speed floor shifted manual transmission perform without hesitation, having only travelled 52,750 miles since new. It has had one repaint done in lacquer in the original color many years ago. Otherwise this car is solid, dry and rust free. All the chrome including the bumpers, all the stainless trim, glass and weatherstrip are in fabulous condition considering their age. Rolling on Coker Classic 6.50-15 wide white wall tires it also has a trunk mounted spare with original jack and tools. Many original documents such as owner’s manual, owner service policy, even the clock instructions are with the car.
