QUICK ONLY IF YOU MASHED THE PEDAL INTO THE FLOOR THE 14/15 MODELS HAD NEW ROMS THAT REMOVE TH HESITATION FROM THE THROTTLE AND KNOCKED 0-60 DOWN TO 3.7 SECONDS AND A 1/4 MILE TIME OF 12.0 FLAT. THIS ONLY APPLIES TO "NON" xDRIVE CARS. THE xDRIVE ADDS ALMOST 400 POUNDS IN WEIGHT AND CREATES ANOTHER 7% LOSS OF HP DUE TO DRIVE TRAIN PARASITIC LOSS. TO PUT THAT INTO PERSPECTIVE THE ALL NEW 7 SERIES THROUGH EXTENSIVE USE OF CARON FIBER AND ALUMINUM LOSES ONLY 88 POUNDS AND STILL USES THE OLD 44O HP(VS 545 ON THE ALPINA) ENGINE. THE NEW ALPINA WILL BE ALONG IN 2+ YEARS. THIS 16 MONTH OLD 2014/15 HAS A FULL 2015 WARRANTY REMAINING UNTIL JUNE 05, "2018" INCLUDING ALL FREE SERVICES AND BRAKES. ALL ROAD HIGHWAY MILES PUT ON HER 28,XXXNote: This B7 is the lightweight chassis "without" the 385 pound xDrive that removes all driving enjoyment. This B7 also has the $5,000 more expensive Long Wheel Base with self leveling Suspension and 6" more inches or rear seat room , compared to the 5 series size SWB. The Short Wheel Base , being almost unsaleable, is being entirely deleted from the Alpina line. IF YOU LOOK THROUGH EBAY YOU FIND ALMOST ALL ARE xDRIVE AS THE PERFORMANCE IS SO DIMINISHED, THE OTHERS ARE USUALLY MIDGET ONLY BACK SEAT SWB(SHORT WHEEL BASE) THAT ALPINA HAS DISCONTINUED FOR THE US MARKET AS THEY WERE SUCH POOR SELLERS. THIS IS THE RARE AND HIGHLY DESIRABLE LONG WHEEL BASE (LWB) WITH REAR WHEEL DRIVE AND A ALPINE RWD ONLY LOCKING DIFFERENTIAL FOR TRACK DAYS, AND BEST ACCELERATION OFF THE LINE. ALSO LOADED WITH RADAR CRUISE CONTROL, THAT NEW FOR 2014 USES CAMERAS AS WELL TO DETECT PEDESTRIANS AND HOW CARS IN FRONT ARE TURNING, WITH A VASTLY BETTER COLLISION AVOIDANCE SYSTEM WITH RADAR PRE SAFE. ALSO BANG AND OLEFSUN SUPER STEREO, ADAPTIVE LED HEADLIGHTS, 5 CAMERA 360 DEGREE WITH 3D IMAGING PARK ASSIST,REAR RADAR TO WATCH FOR INCOMING TRAFFIC AND ALERT YOU WHEN CHANGING LANES, ALSO AN OPTICAL CAMERA FRONT SYSTEM TO KEEP YOU WITHIN THE LANES. NEW FOR 14 IS ALSO ACTIVE FEATURES. ALSO THE 2014 HAS THE TRUNK OPENING AND CLOSING BY SWIPING YOUR LEG UNDER THE BUMPER WHEN YOUR HANDS ARE FULL.CERAMIC CONTROLS, 4 ZONE HVAC, COLD WEATHER PKG WITH HEATED STEERING WHEEL, NEW HANDWRITING PAD ON I DRIVE FOR 2014 TO INPUT NAV AND PHONE DIRECTIONS BY WRITING WITH YOUR FINGERTIPS. THE REFRESHED 2014/ AND 2015 (ALL 162 OF THEM) ARE THE BEST ALPINAS EVER BUILT WITH BETTER DOWN FORCE GIVING A 196 MPH TOP END. THE 2011-12 B7'S ARE NOT EVEN IN THE BALL PARK WITH THE THOROUGHLY REVISED AND ENGINEERED 2014. THIS 2014 CARRIES A 2015 WARRANTY TILL JUNE 05, "2018" MOST IMPORTANT THIS CAR IS A RARE MIDNIGHT BLUE METALLIC, NOT THE PURPLE HUE OF THE ALPINA BLUE. MUCH BETTER LOOKING, CAR ALSO HAS FULL EXTENDED NAPPA LEATHER ON THE DOOR TOPS, DASH, AND A.B ,C PILLARS WHERE THEY STITCHED INTO THE ALACANTARA SUEDE LEATHER ROOF, NEVER BEEN HURT, DOES NOT EVEN HAVE ROCK CHIPS ON THE HOOD AND SPOILER. MSRP WAS ABOUT $144,000. SAVE $65,000 ON A 16 MONTH OLD SUPER SEDAN!!!!!!!! Also has EXTENSIVE California Only Car Emissions warranty: 6 years 70,000 miles covering Turbos, Intercoolers, All Engine and turbo electronics, Fuel Injectors, plugs, Fuel pumps, Exhaust system, intake and exhaust manifolds ,Cats, and much more. B7 Bomber: When the Wealthy Go StealthyThe all-new 2014 BMW Alpina B7, rolling on exclusive 20-spoke 21-inch alloy wheels and wearing a bold body kit - brand-new front fascia, rear spoiler, and rear lower valance that help reduce front lift 75percent and rear lift 75percent.Up from 35 and 25% on the 2012 -- looks stealthier than any F01 7 Series model to date. If Hollywood made "Ronin 2," the B7 RWD would be De Niro's ride of choice. Not only does the Alpina look strong, mean, and sleek, as if it could pounce on an apex in the blink of an eye, but it coddles up to five crewmembers in complete comfort and, with standard rear drive and an electronically limited top speed of 174 mph(xDrive) and 194 for RWD models! it makes for one masterful escape vehicle. When purchasing a B7, though, don't expect to escape the dealership without plopping down at least $130,000 to 148,000. In fact, with only around 150 destined for the U.S. per year (BMW will build roughly 900 annually at its Dingolfing factory), the Alpina B7, the priciest V-8-powered 7 in BMW's lineup, will no doubt command premiums well above its list price. Worth it? But of course. At the 7 Series' Dinfolfing digs, workers on BMW's "bespoke line" assemble the B7's twin-turbo V-8, which is based on the 750's 440 horsepower, 475-pound-foot N63 unit and then modified with specialized 46mm Honeywell turbochargers,Forged Mahle pistons,Forged Crank and a reinforced cylinder head, and NGK spark plugs. Exhaling through an Alpina Stainless Steel low-back-pressure exhaust, the B7's mill is rated at 545 horsepower at 5500 rpm and 536 pound-feet of torque at 3000 rpm. Fuel economy, at 19 mpg combined for the rear-drive B7, has not suffered, equaling that of a 750i. After driving this beast we believe BMW is being a little low on the numbers. -------------- To keep all the Alpina's ponies calm and collected in the corral, the B7 utilizes an extensively revamped cooling system that includes an additional oil cooler and coolant radiator, a low-temp intercooler, an external transmission cooler, and a radiator and 1000-watt radiator fan borrowed from the V-12-powered 760Li. Whether its customers plan to use the B7 for stoplight drag racing, hot-lapping at a racetrack, or just cruising the Vegas strip in the summer, Alpina aimed to ensure its luxury sedan never overheated. The B7 utilizes a ZF 8HP542 TUe Eight speed automatic transmission, shared with the 750, but with numerous upgrades to the driveline, notably reinforced driveshaft and half-shafts from the 760Li and a stiffer differential shell made of iron. Because around 30 percent of Alpina's 200 or so employees are engineers, the B7 also boasts proprietary software for the engine management system, eight speed automatic, and electronic stability control. Speaking of ESC, Alpina tuned the B7's to a higher threshold of intervention. Ditto for the traction control system. Not content just toying with the electronics, Alpina tweaked the hardware as well. The B7 sports stiffer springs as well as brakes borrowed from the armored (and very heavy) 760Li Protection. Rolling stock, too, has been upgraded. Alpina's 21-inch Classic wheels -- 22 pounds front, 23 pounds rear -- are incredibly light for a cast rim of that diameter and are wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 tires, size 245/35 front, 285/30 rear. (non x Drive) Alpina claims the wheel/tire assembly is lighter than a 750's optional 20-inch wheel fitted with a run-flat tire. The Alpina philosophy is to produce vehicles that deliver high torque at low rpm, with an overall driving experience that is both quiet and comfortable, even when the landscape is blurring out of focus. Alpina's targets for the B7, naturally, were the Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG and the Jaguar XJ Supersport. To that end, the B7 wholeheartedly establishes itself as a formidable foe to both. Power, especially from a twin-turbo engine, comes on linearly and effortlessly, propelling the 2.5-ton B7 to 60 mph in a claimed 3.8seconds (Alpina says add a 4/ tenths for xDrive/). Throttle response is quick but not too aggressive, making it fun and contagious to spur those 545 horses at will. The engine, unsurprisingly, is noticeably subdued under full throttle (don't forget Alpina's philosophy), so those wanting screaming valves or bellowing exhaust pipes will need to look elsewhere. The ride is taut, well damped, but never jarring -- respectable considering the huge 21s and low-profile rubber -- and the steering feels light and communicative. Like the 750 on which it is based, the B7 stays impressively flat through corners, thanks in part to the 7's active roll stabilization, yet its limits are a notch above. Turn-in is sharper, grip is more tenacious, and transitions are smoother. Moreover, the Alpina's brakes are less grabby and easier to modulate than the 750's. Inside the B7, Alpina enriched the standard 750i interior with unique doorsills featuring illuminated "B7" badges, Myrtle wood (The hand's down favorite)or piano black lacquer trim , Alpina blue gauges with red pointers, and a Lavalina leather-wrapped steering wheel with parallel stitching (not cross stitching), which is smoother to the touch. (If you're wondering about Lavalina leather, it comes from soft-hide cows that graze between Basel and Geneva, Switzerland.) Our tester came with black leather and lacquer trim, and its ambiance proved as stealthy as the B7's facade.Alpina, which also operates a vintage wine business, has worked exclusively with BMW for over 40 years. Its renowned history, engineering excellence, and close relationship with the roundel all show in the B7, a potent pour for elite customers who find an M5 is too high strung, a 750i too relaxed, and both too common. This vehicle uses an indicator light to alert users when it's time to change the oil. ------------------------------------------ Vehicle Identification Number WBAYE8C55ED136535 Type YE83 Model 750li - USA Development Code F02 (MUE) Chassis LIM Steering LL Doors 4 Engine N63T Displacement 4.40 Power 330 Drivetrain HECK Transmission AUT Color Midnight Blue Metallic - B38 Upholstery Excl.leder Nappa Erw./elfenbeinweis - NAEW Production Plant DINGOLFING Production Date 2014-02-15----------------------------- Standard Equipment 1CC Automatic Start/stop Function Auto Start Stop Funktion 1CD Brake Energy Regeneration Brake Energy Regeneration 2SU Alloy Wheels Star Spoke 250 Lm Raeder Sternspeiche 250 212 National Brake System Equipment Ausstattung Bremsanlage Laender 302 Alarm System Alarmanlage 319 Integrated Universal Remote Control Integrierte Universal-fernbedienung 4NB Aut.air Conditioning 4-zone Control Klimaautomatik Mit 4-zonenregelung 4U2 Driving Experience Control Incl. Active Cruise Control with Stop&Go function. Relaxed driving even in heavy traffic: Active Cruise Control with Stop&Go function keeps you at a constant distance from the vehicle ahead at all times. If the traffic comes to a halt, the system applies the brakes until the vehicle comes to a standstill and then automatically moves on as soon as the road is clear. Active Cruise Control with Stop&Go function was primarily developed for journeys on motorways and major roads. Three radar sensors with a range of up to 150 metres permanently scan the carriageway in the direction of travel. When you approach a vehicle in front, the engine management and brakes adjust your speed so that the distance is automatically kept constant – a nd if necessary, the vehicle comes to a standstill. When the lane ahead becomes clear or the vehicle in front speeds up, Active Cruise Control accelerates again until you reach your desired speed. To move off again after the vehicle has stopped, the driver has to give the command to accelerate manually, either by briefly pressing the accelerator or pressing a button. If the stop lasts from 1 to 3 seconds, the vehicle moves off automatically. Up to four cruising speeds can be pre-programmed and called up at the push of a button. Active Cruise Control keeps your preferred speed constant within a range of 30 to 210 km/h and automatically adapts the following distance to the vehicle in front of you. The Stop&Go function even controls the speed when the car slows down to a standstill and restarts the engine automatically after a short interval, e.g. in a traffic jam. On multilane carriageways, the system detects whether another vehicle is only driving in the adjacent lane. Furthermore, if you wish to resume full control of the vehicle at any time, all you have to do is briefly press the accelerator or brake in order to deactivate the system. Active Cruise Control with Stop&Go function is not an autopilot. Consequently, if the vehicle ahead brakes harder than expected or if the system detects a critical situation, the driver receives acoustic and optical prompts to take action. Driving in heavy traffic thus becomes noticeably easier and tiring situations such as traffic jams become easier to master with greater concentration. ---------------------------------------------------- Dynamic Drive. Supreme agility, unwavering stability and unmatched comfort on bends: the active chassis control system Dynamic Drive minimises body roll and distributes it between both axles, ensuring a comfortable ride for all occupants. Dynamic Drive uses active stabilisers on the front and rear axles to counteract the vehicle's tendency to roll in a corner. Working together with acceleration and position sensors, a management system and other components, such as a compensation tank for sound control, the system ensures supreme agility at all speeds, balanced reactions to load changes and remarkably precise steering. The stabilisers continually adapt to suit the driving situation and the changes to the vehicle's self-steering behaviour. For example, when driving on the straight, Dynamic Drive reduces the pressure of the stabilisers, treating them individually, so allowing for a highly comfortable ride - a particular benefit for rear-seat passengers. When cornering or making sudden changes of direction, a "sportier" setting will see the stabilisers increase the rigidity of the suspension relevant to the intensity of the lateral forces to prevent body roll. Roll distribution between the front and back axles also helps in difficult situations. Dynamic Drive ensures that the vehicle literally hugs the road, under- or oversteering is reduced - resulting in enhanced safety, greater comfort and an impressively dynamic driving experience. ------------------------------------- BMW Head-Up Display. Don’t lose sight of the important things. The BMW Head-Up Display projects relevant driving information directly into the driver’s line of sight. This allows him to process it up to 50% faster and keep his attention where it belongs – on the road. BMW vehicles with BMW Head-Up Display can be recognised by a small square depression on the dashboard. This contains a projector and a system of mirrors that beams an easy-to-read, high-contrast image onto a translucent film on the windscreen, directly in your line of sight. The image is projected in such a way that it appears to be about two metres away, above the tip of the bonnet, making it particularly comfortable to read. BMW Head-Up Display halves the time it takes for eyes to shift focus from road to the instruments and back. The system’s height can be adjusted for optimal viewing. The full-colour BMW Head-Up Display in many newer BMW models makes the car even more comfortable for the driver. More colours means it’s easier to differentiate between general driving information like speed limits and navigation directions and urgent warning signals. Important information like ‘Pedestrian in the road’ (in conjunction with the optional BMW Night Vision) is now even more clear and recognisable – and this subsequently reduces the driver’s reaction time. The BMW Head-Up Display can easily be adjusted horizontally or vertically, via the iDrive Controller, for optimal viewing. This increased picture rotation means the BMW Head-Up Display is individually adjustable. All in all, it enables you to register information much faster, without having to take your eyes off the road. In addition to the speed, which is displayed permanently, the BMW Head-Up Display can also show other content depending on model and equipment. Examples include: rpm (in BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M this is multi-coloured), navigation instructions like the Guiding information with intersection zoom function and Lane Guiding, Speed Limit Info and the status of the Active Cruise Control. Driver Assistant warnings and the Check Control are also displayed in the BMW Head-Up Display, e.g. pedestrian recognition from BMW Night Vision or the Collision Warning. The driver can configure the BMW Head-Up Display to his requirements using the iDrive Controller. ----------------------------------------------- Comfort access system. The comfort access system puts an end to searching for car keys in your handbag or pockets. Simply approach your BMW, open the door and press the Start button. Your unique key is recognised remotely by the comfort access sensors. As soon as you come within 1.5 metres of your BMW, the comfort access system remotely senses your BMW key, wherever you happen to be carrying it – in your jacket pocket, handbag or briefcase. Simply touch the door handle and the door unlocks. The system also senses when you've entered the cabin and enables the Start/Stop button, so all you need to do is press it and drive off. And when you reach your destination, your BMW locks all doors automatically simply with a press on the exterior door handle. Your vehicle key also functions as a remote control for opening and closing the tailgate. If you wish, you can store your individual driver settings by using the key's memory function. Up to eleven individual preferences for seat adjustments, exterior mirrors, steering wheel position, BMW Head-Up Display and the audio system can, depending on the model of your BMW, be saved on the key and activated each time you enter your vehicle. Contactless opening of the tailgate is another innovative technology from BMW ConnectedDrive. A sensor detects a brief movement of your foot below the rear bumper and sends a signal to the on-board computer, which unlocks the tailgate. The tailgate then springs open on its own or is opened by the optional tailgate lift. Contactless opening of the tailgate requires the vehicle system to recognise your car key and unlock the vehicle. BMW ConnectedDrive provides other useful services that complement comfort access: if you're not sure whether you've locked your car, you can use the special equipment Remote Services feature to check on your vehicle from wherever you are. Call the BMW Call Centre to check the status of your vehicle – and have it locked or unlocked, as needed. An even more practical idea: the iPhone™ app My BMW Remote. Depending on the vehicle model and equipment, this app allows you to use various Remote Services and call up helpful vehicle information. For example, if you can't find your BMW in a car park, simply make the lights flash or sound the horn with the iPhone. You'll locate your vehicle and can unlock it immediately with your iPhone. Some BMW models also offer Remote Climate Control, so you can start your journey at an optimum temperature. The prerequisite for Remote Services is the special equipment ConnectedDrive Service ========================== Adaptive LED Headlights. The Adaptive LED Headlights give the BMW 7 Series its unmistakable appearance. The accent line with indicator function cuts into the top of the characteristic light rings and redefines the expression of the entire front section. Function and form unite in the distinctive BMW double-round headlights. Daytime running, low and high beams shine from the 3-dimensional corona rings, while the LED lights illuminate the road with daytime intensity, and the cones of the Adaptive Headlights follow every turn in the road. When turning slowly around a bend in the road, the integrated cornering lights automatically light up the area at the side of the vehicle. High-beam assistance offers outstanding visibility for the driver and masks areas with the potential for glare. -------------------------------------------------------------- BMW Improves Stop and Go Cruise Control Function To Work Up To 130mph $2,200 The latest development stage of the familiar Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function (ACC Stop & Go) uses a front-mounted camera on the rear-view mirror in addition to the full-range radar sensors to provide an enhanced interpretation of the traffic situation ahead. When driving in slow-moving traffic or traffic jams, the driver is able to safely move along with the flow of traffic and let the vehicle’s automatic systems handle the tasks of stopping, pulling away again and approaching junctions where there are already vehicles waiting ahead. Combining radar and video data in this way improves detection of other vehicles and reduces the system’s reaction time. If a vehicle ahead brakes very sharply in free-flowing traffic, requiring the driver to take action, he or she is prompted to do so by a two-stage warning. One second and 28 metres. This is the time required to take your eyes off the road and read 100 km/h on the speedometer. The full-colour BMW Head-Up Display projects the current speed or navigation instructions directly into your field of vision while your eyes stay on the road. The clear, distinct colours make it easy for you to recognise important information, such as the pedestrian warning from BMW Night Vision or direction indicators. If required, the currently applicable speed limit and route directions from the navigation system can also be displayed. Particularly helpful at complicated motorway exits or confusing junctions is the clear display showing the correct lane to take. For the first time the information is projected onto the windscreen of the BMW 6 Series Coupé in full colour and is clearly legible in all lighting conditions. The BMW Head-Up Display can be easily adjusted vertically and horizontally via the iDrive Touch Controller for optimal viewing. Standard Features 2014 B7 Alpina Makes Biggest Bimmer Act A Lot Like An M3 For the time being, BMW has left it up to close collaborator Alpina in Bavaria to create a turbocharged V8-powered rival for the Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG and Audi S8. We've been lucky enough to take a few spirited drives in Alpinafied BMWs on the no-limit Autobahns around the company's headquarters in Buchloe, Germany, over the years, and each experience has been solidly hair-raising. Other than creating what may be the country's ultimate everyday Autobahn missiles, Alpina does wonders for the ride and handling of the BMW models they touch, a long with providing impressively reworked transmission interfaces and improved overall responsiveness. In the case of this B7, Alpina turns the 7 Series into the best big Bimmer going. In the niche of thundering bi-turbo V8 luxury sedans, only this 545-horsepower Alpina B7, 512-hp Audi S8 and the 536-hp Mercedes S63 AMG (really reach this particular level. The $139,625 500HP Porsche Panamera Turbo and the $176,275 Turbo S are both fine rides, but they aren't traditional sedans, and their unusual aesthetics don't always appeal to the buttoned-down execs that buy traditional premium saloons. It's not surprising that buying either the B7 Bimmer or the S63 Benz will likely set you back some $140,000 to $145,000 once they are spec'd exactly the way you'd want 'em (the SWB-only Audi is a bit cheaper, at about $124k happily optioned). Base price for the Alpina B7 short wheelbase is $126,600 or $132,500 for the long wheelbase model, with a further $3,000 premium for the undesirable 400 pound xDrive. Following these, as a curveball, there's the 503-hp Jaguar XJ/XJL Supersport at around $126,000. It's like two separate worlds. Official 0-60 time is now listed at 4.4(xDrive) We turned an astounding sub 4 second 3.8 seconds seconds,on the Rear Wheel Drive models while top speed has jumped to 194 mph. We were expecting greatness in our 750Li-based rear-wheel-drive Alpina B7, but it went a bit beyond our expectations. Its overall composure, grace and sophistication , even while in the sportiest of setups, are impressive. The N63B44 4.4-liter twin turbo engine with Valvetronic now pumps forth 545 hp between 5,200 and 6,250 rpm and 538 pound-feet of torque from 2,800 to 5,000 rpm. The pre-facelift B7, you may recall, offered but 493 hp and a "paltry" 516 lb-ft. For shame. Official 0-60 time is now listed at 4.0(non xDrive only) seconds, while top speed has jumped from 175 mph in last year's car to 194 mph, a number that we tested ourselves on the latest episode of The List. Take your new B7 to a track with a really long straight; you'll be astounded at the pulling power the V8 pours out right up until the braking point – and the Alpina compound brake set is forever up to the task. Alpina has done extensive aero work to the standard 7 Series bodyshell for big increases in cooling air flow to the engine and brakes. The whole front chin has been redesigned with larger intakes and each passage ducted to cool one specific portion of this finely tuned high-performance mix. There is, of course, the reworked engine control electronics. Aside from this mandatory software upgrade, Alpina fits the engine's two turbochargers with larger flow-through turbines that are two millimeters greater in diameter. That seems like little, but, lord, is it much. Our first track session in the B7 happened with expert Andreas Bovensiepen at the wheel. He is now effectively the boss at Alpina, following in his papa's footsteps. Bovensiepen also just happens to be one hell of a track star, having won various GT championship titles. Out on the circuit at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, just as a front passenger, we could feel a dramatic improvement versus the stock 750Li. In fact, the B7 already struck us as a finer track car than either the M5 or M6, something we'd bet that BMW doesn't really want to hear. That's particularly impressive considering how much the B7 weighs – models vary between 4,655 pounds up to 5,055 pounds, depending on wheelbase length and whether the hefty xDrive is fitted. Couple this sensation with the fact that the revamped Alpina suspension lowers the car by six-tenths of an inch while also providing a stiffer spring set all around, and some of the improvement starts to makes sense. Even in the B7's firmest Sport+ damper setting, the springs are still surprisingly compliant, while the anti-roll control does its part to keep this big boy on the straight and level in hot corners. Another fine helper? The Michelin Pilot Sport tires – 245/35 ZR21 front, 285/30 ZR21 rear. Again, one would rightly assume that 21-inchers at the corners would make the B7's ride and cabin noise a little too Euro, but that's not the case thanks to Alpina's fine tuning expertise and the fact that they aren't stiff-sidewalled run-flats. Alpina uses slick little pushbuttons for swapping cogs in the eight-speed ZF. As far as we're aware, Alpina can take the credit for introducing steering-wheel-mounted shifters on a road car, having added the technology way back in 1993. Never content with the clutter caused by having large-enough shift paddles, Alpina uses slick little pushbuttons for swapping cogs in the eight-speed ZF. The hidden switchgear is on the backside of the steering wheel spokes, right for upshift and left for downshift, clean and simple. The custom steering wheel i tself is a wonderful piece under all circumstances – steering action is calibrated to be easier than on the standard Bimmer 7 Series while in Comfort/Efficiency mode and heavier than on the series car when in Sport+ mode. Alpina is also somewhat known for doing swell interiors. We tried both the Alpina B7 and the latest iteration of BMW 7 Series, and the work by Alpina is vastly superior. Other than the terrific new and functional sport steering wheel with Switch-Tronic shifting, the Alpina-specific gauge cluster should be robbed by BMW and used on all of its cars; the current ages-old BMW dial graphics are boring and not as legible. In conclusion we found the 2014 Alpina B7 LWB(Long Wheel Base) to be the finest combination of power , handling, and braking, while maintaining the board room cockpit feel of all the uber sports sedans. The SWB(Short Wheel Base has rear seats no bigger than a 5 series) All future 2017 and newer 7 series will drop the useless SWB for the US market./. Also the power robbing and very heavy x Drive is best left to the snow belt where performance is not an issue 1/2 the year. ---------------------CARFAX Ownership History The number of owners is estimated Owner 1 Year purchased2014 Type of owner Personal lease Estimated length of ownership1 yr. 5 mo. A special camera captures the speed limit posted on signs; a control unit then processes this information together with data from the on-board Navigation System---------------------------Integral Active Steering. $2,800 With the Integral Active Steering from BMW, the rear wheels help to steer and provide more driving stability, safety and comfort. Different driving situations call for different steering responses. A smaller turning circle with fewer movements and more precise movements is helpful when parking or negotiating hairpin bends. The optional Integral Active Steering adapts to each driving situation. An electric motor in the steering column changes the driver’s steering movements dynamically – the amount of effort needed to turn the front wheels is automatically increased at low speeds and reduced at high speeds. The rear wheels help to turn up to a maximum of three degrees – a small movement with a large effect. The precise angle of lock is determined by a control device after measuring factors like wheel speed, speed, steering wheel angle, etc. Under 60 km/h, the front and rear wheels steer in opposing directions to reduce the turning circle and ensure every bend is taken with precision. Above 60 km/h the front and rear wheels turn in the same direction to ensure more stability at higher speeds. When changing lanes, the vehicle practically ‘glides’ in an even sideways motion, which extremely comfortable for all the vehicle’s occupants and especially so for those in the rear. From a physical point of view, the Integral Active Steering lets the forces from rotational movement (rate of yaw) and lateral acceleration – forces which normally work together – work systematically and, above all, independently of each other. Thus, stability remains constant even in sporty driving situations. The extra safety is noticeable when braking on different surfaces, where the vehicle may tend to swerve, as the usual counter steering measures are not applicable here. Integral Active Steering takes on this function and helps the driver stabilise his vehicle. ($2,800) OPTIONAL ON ALL BMWS ------- ACTIVE ROLL BAR STABILIZATION Normally $3,000 plus but included in this car BMW has developed an active stabilizer bar system, called Dynamic Drive, which significantly reduces roll angle during cornering. For higher lateral accelerations, the roll angle increases gradually at the same rate as in conventional cars to alert the driver to the proximity of the stability limit. In addition, the self-steering properties of the vehicle, including understeering and oversteering, improve handling, agility, steering precision, and safety. The Dynamic Drive system consists of a hydraulic valve block with integrated sensors, a hydraulic pump coupled to the power steering pump, a lateral acceleration sensor, a control unit, several hydraulic lines, and two active stabilizer bars with rotating hydraulic actuators. The main control inputs for the Dynamic Drive system are steering angle and lateral acceleration. A dynamic observer implemented in the electronic control unit calculates the necessary vehicle stabilization torque based on a prediction derived from the steering angle signal and lateral acceleration. Normally $3,500/ included in 760li and Alpina -------------- 7 SERIES FULL LED 2013 LIGHTING $1,900 ON ALPINA AND ALL OTHERS, STANDARD ON 760LI FLAGSHIP The new 7 Series boasts a revised exterior featuring new “squarish” LED corona lights with an LED turn signal indicator placed in the headlight. Each headlight contains eight LEDs. While the previous model featured a kidney grille with 9 and 12 slats, based on the Night Vision Camera option, the facelifted 7 comes now with a single configuration of 9 slats. More chrome is now embedded in the fascia with two bars in the front apron that give the flagship model a more aggressive look. The interior of the new 7 is similarly enhanced with a newly redesigned iDrive system and the availability of an optional Bang & Olufsen High-End Surround Sound system.99Active Front Seatsclose Front seating surfaces that periodically, alternately raise and lower the left and right halves of each front seat cushion $1,000 ============= RADAR GUIDED CRUISE CONTROL $2,700 When engaged, Enhanced Active Cruise Control operates as normal cruise control until it senses a slower moving vehicle directly ahead. At that time, the cruise control matches the speed of the 7 Series to that of the slower moving vehicle, maintaining a driver selected, pre-set distance between the two vehicles. Active Cruise Control resumes initial speed set by the driver, once there's no longer any nearby slower moving traffic ahead. (Deletes Lane Departure Warning when selected) $2,700 --------------------------- Parking Assistant When engaged, surveys the size of parking spaces to determine which ones are of adequate size for the vehicle to be parked in. When the correct sized space is found, this feature will provide all steering inputs required to maneuver the car into the space. In a combined effort with Parking Assistant to park the car, the driver must select the appropriate gear and control the accelerator and brakes; $500------------------------------ Night Vision w/Pedestrian Detection Infrared camera that monitors a range that can reach 980 feet ahead and can detect pedestrians up to 300 feet ahead. The camera detects objects within its range and sends images of these objects to the display screen located in the center of the dashboard. If a pedestrian is detected and appears to be approaching the road ahead, a visual warning appears in the display screen. $2,800 ------------------------ Professional Rear Entertainment System with full 2nd rear seat I Drive $2,700 Dual floating screens with all I Drive function's for rear seat passengers to delve into on board media, music, video and separate Satt and HD radio. The range of functions offered in this way extend from the Automatic Teleservice Call via the Manual Teleservice Call all the way to BMW Teleservice Diagnosis including Teleservice Help. To make a Teleservice call, the car independently – using the CBS Condition Based Service function as an on-board diagnostic system – determines the type of service required next and when it is needed. To determine the next visit to a workshop, the 750Li is able to transmit data on engine oil, brake fluid, brake discs and pads as well as other parts and components subject to wear and tear through a telephone line to the driver's BMW Service Partner. In the event of an electronic deficiency or malfunction, BMW Teleservice Diagnosis serves to transmit any defect codes to BMW Breakdown Assistance. And if it is possible to remedy the cause of the defect by re-setting the software on the appropriate control unit, the command required for this purpose may be sent directly to the car from the BMW Breakdown Assistance Centre. Downsizing has been the name of the game lately, and all players are at the chopping block from the Germans to the Italians to the French and Japanese. Smaller is the new bigger, as far as trends go from the ’70’s era to where we are today. Most buyers in BMW showrooms and even many BMW enthusiasts are surprised to learn that BMW has a giant 6 liter V12 on offer for 2013, and it comes with two turbochargers charging its intake up to a flywheel 600+ hp – as if the V12’s grunt wasn’t enough “There are no giant air intakes sucking up leaves and small animals at the front. It doesn’t even make any noise.” How has this V12 managed to stay out of the spot light? It could have something to do with the way it floats down the road in near silence. In truth, I believe it has more to do with the fact BMW are borderline embarrassed that they offer such a stonking AMG killer engine; an engine that sucks back premium in a good ‘Ol ’70s kinda way and puts power, panache and pride firmly in front of economy in a 1990’s Wall Street kinda way. The V12 flies in the face of BMW’s efficient dynamics marketing tag lines – though this V12 is actually a fuel miser considering its potent performance figures. Actually not too far off the V8. Another reason why this V12 lives on without much press is because of the fact it’s only offered in the engine bay of the long wheelbase 7 series. BMW sells very few of these cars, and the people who drive them seldom show up at community picnics to mix and mingle. You’re unlikely to meet a V12 7 series owner unless you’re likely to meet a plethora of CEOs. If you do, however, get the chance to acquaint yourself with BMW’s V12 7 series, you’ll notice a few subtle exterior highlights and a “760Li” badge on the boot. The 760Li is probably the world’s greatest sleeper car. It looks absolutely I’m-an-executive- boring – thanks in part to its long wheelbase. The rare M package 760's give it a demeanor more fitting to it's performance. Its wheels are handsome but conservative.(Non M) There are no giant air intakes sucking up leaves and small animals at the front. It doesn’t even make any noise. This car simply does not announce itself. All the more reason to obtain one of the very rare M package 760Li's. “It was the biblical parallel of Jesus walking on water – the 760Li burning rubber on it.” That said, if you get the chance to get to know the 760Li from behind the wheel, you’ll find a different facet of this car that is in no way conservative or boring. My first experience with the N74 twin-turbo V12 came a few years ago on a quiet tree-lined street outside of the city. It had been raining and the asphalt was soaking wet – though rain was no longer falling. It was that magical time when you can enjoy a little less friction coefficient with perfect visibility. I was curious what noises the V12 would make at full song, but had no interest in a top speed run – lest I lose my license in the process. I opted for an acceleration run to let the engine rev-out and enjoy the emotion of it all. “Steering is light but accurate with decent feel and feedback, as is typical of all 7 series.” What happened next will stay in my automotive memory forever. With all traction nannies turned off I applied full throttle from a stand-still. The V12 lit the rear wheels as if they were on ice. At first, the car just sat there, almost motionless, unable to find traction. Then the rear tires began to heat up, gripping the road surface and hurling me forward. The sound of the tires spinning against the road surface was still louder than the exhaust note, filling the cabin with a high-pitched humming noise. In a short time I was into triple digit territory and back on the brakes. What remains etched in my memory is what I saw in the rearview mirror as I accelerated away. At first I thought it must be water droplets – but the mist was too fine. Then I thought it must be steam – which it partly was. But then I noticed the grayish color, hanging in the air. The 760Li managed to burn its tires, releasing a massive cloud of tire smoke and leaving two fat bars of rubber running parallel down the rain-soaked road for more than 150 feet. That must have been some kind of record. Juvenile it may seem – especially in the company of a 760Li – but it was a physical manifestation of the greatness of this car. It was tangible proof of the V12’s awesomeness – normally silenced and insulated to the point you’d never know its magic. It was the biblical parallel of Jesus walking on water – the 760Li burning rubber on it. The 2013 6.0 liter twin-turbo under-hood is capable of propelling the 7 series from a stand-still to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.2 seconds. It produces 547 hp (alleged) at 5,250 rpm and a mammoth 560 lb-ft of torque at 5,000 rpm – though the torque curve is flat and the twist starts barely above idle. “Most likely it will be someone who has an attraction to BMW history and design…” “Enough about the engine!” you say, “how does it drive?” Honestly, I’d rather savour the engine. The 760Li is a graceful car that prefers a martini to a bar shot. It doesn’t really want to play, and would rather roll quietly down the road without attracting too much attention. At a recent press event in California I was afforded the opportunity to test the 760Li on twisty backroads, and when pressing on the car did everything as it should considering its mandate, without any drama or excitement – save for it’s neck-straining acceleration. After a hard run down a mountain side moderate brake fade was felt. The optional 4 wheel steering was fabulous and the standard($3,500)Dynamic suspension with hydraulic roll bars was superlative. It made the Alpina feel much heavier by comparison. . Steering is light but accurate with decent feel and feedback, as is typical of all 7 series. Some have coined the 760iL the “M7? of the brand – but I must whole-heartedly disagree. It is far closer in construction and feel to Rolls-Royce’ Ghost. There is truth to this statement as the Ghost’s chassis is based upon the 7 series’ frame and its V12 engine is in fact a stroked N74, gaining 0.6 liters of displacement and increasing output to 563 hp and 580 lb-ft of torque. The 760Li’s graceful body motions, silenced interior, calm demeanor and silky acceleration all harken back to my time behind the wheel of a Ghost. With a base price of $140,200 USD it is a relative bargain considering the exotic construction of its V12, and its Rolls-Royce worthy back-bone – and it gives me what I want from behind the wheel, and frankly, it hides its V12 as if a state secret. What I would really like is a 7 series that boasts a powerful V12 with a little more engine noise channeled into the cabin. A 7 series that lets its hair down a little. A 7 that sports more aggressive handling, bigger brakes and in-your-face styling. Also known as the M Sport 760Li . As it turns out, you can have all of the above, minus the V12, for a cool $128,495 USD. Alpina’s B7 transforms the 7 series into a veritable sports car, while still offering executive first-class seating for all. And you’ll have a handsome $10,000 dollars in hand – not that you’ll care if you’re considering either of these machines as a second or third steed in your driveway. The 760Li is a clear winner in ride , power and performance over the Alpina B7.with every option the 2013 760Li will top $160,000 but a bargain compared to the $300,000 Rolls Ghost, “For now, let’s lay two more perfect strips of rubber in the rain.” The Alpina B7 makes it to 100 km/h (62 mph) in a scant 4.6 seconds, compared to the staggering 4.1 on the 760, and winds out at a (shocking) top speed of 194 mph. It doesn’t have the sophisticated swagger of a V12 under-hood, but its twin-turbo 4.4 liter V8 does offer up 540 hp and 538 lb-ft of torque, thus producing more alleged horsepower(5 HP) than the V12 while twisting out less torque. Who, then, would buy a 760Li? Most likely it will be someone who has an attraction to BMW history and design, someone who appreciates the sophistication of the V12 without aiming to unleash it, someone who wants the best, because even if hidden under sheet metal, he still knows it’s there. I for my part, would chose the B7 any day of the week if given the option to buy either car. Of course, we love this engine and hope it lives on in some form or another, forever. By 2030 we may have to settle for a three cylinder with 12 turbos, but we’ll worry about this eventuality around 2020. For now, let’s lay two more perfect strips of rubber in the rain. Test Driven: BMW 760Li vs. Alpina B7, Nick’s TakePosted: October 4, 2013 If you compare the B7 and 760Li on paper, it appears that the V12 has been outgunned by the V8, with BMW rating the 760 at 545bhp and 550ft/bs of torque. However, I have learned to be skeptical of BMW’s official power claims because they are consistently conservative by around 10-15%. I decided to do a speed test, on the same straightaway, between the B7 and 760 to find out where the V12 really stood. Without going into any incriminating details, I found that the 760 was going around 25mph faster than the B7 was at the end of the straight… definitely not a result we would expect from a 5hp deficit. It seems to me that the 760’s 6.0L twin turbo V12 is actually putting out more in the neighborhood of 600+hp than BMW’s claimed 545hp. In terms of speed, car to car, the difference is felt in the higher end. 0-60 times will likely be similar, but on a highway pull the 760 should pull away from the Alpina. That said, remember that this is a clash between titans here. Both cars are extremely fast, just the 760 is so much faster on the 2013..... especially for their size. Having felt the Alpina at speed, I don’t think it’s power has been underrated like the 760’s has. One reason for this is that Alpina is an aftermarket tuning company, and isn’t a full manufacturer like BMW. I’ve heard a few reasons for BMWs, and other German cars, being underrated on paper. One is that there may be some tax in the EU based on horsepower figures, and the other is that German companies have been rating the minimum power levels of their engines. This means that at the top of a mountain, with far less oxygen in the air, the car will produce what the manufacturer claims. Either way, a physical test showed the 760Li to be a lot faster than the Alpina B7, so take it how you will. The real difference between these two cars is how their engines affect the driving experience. Many people might think its all about power and torque figures, but it’s more about how those things are delivered by the machine. A V12 is not needed to make 500, 600, 700 horsepower, especially now that everything is turbocharged. What a V12 does do, is smooth everything out substantially. This even goes as far as the tangible physics of the engine as it runs. A V12, by its very design of six cylinders on each bank, is naturally in perfect balance when the engine is spinning. This means that you don’t feel any vibrations coming through the chassis of the car as you drive along, everything feels more at peace. It is actually similar to how a rotary engine in a Mazda RX7 feels, except a V12 has loads more torque available when you put your foot down. This isn’t to say that the V8 in the Alpina feels bad at all. It feels quite powerful, and punchy like any V8 does. However when I hopped into the 760 after driving the Alpina, the difference in smoothness was noticeable. Vibrations are just one part of it, power delivery is another. Now obviously both of these cars were twin turbocharged, so they both had phenomenal low-end torque available. But where the V8 in the Alpina hits hard and fast, the V12 in the 760 delivers its power a little more gradually, with a substantial force that never seems to relent. The V8 feels like a sledgehammer, but the V12 feels like a Tsunami. Each of these engines might appeal to different people, but for me the V12 760Li is the way to go. The speed is a bonus, but the smoothness is everything, especially when we are talking about top-tier luxury cars. Even if the the B7 had been faster than the 760, I would still prefer the 760 because of the V12’s characteristics. It is easy to see why there continues to be a niche market for big, twelve cylinder limousines among the well to do. They really do offer the most pristine experience possible. If you happen to be one of those wealthy car snobs, and are between vehicles at the moment, then the BMW 760Li is a pretty solid choice for you. Fully loaded, and I don’t know why you’d have it any other way, the 760Li tops out around $161,000. That makes it a bit of a bargain, all things considered, because it’s closest competitor, the Mercedes S600, starts at $160,000 without any options fitted at all. I haven’t tried the S600 for myself yet, but I can definitely say that I’d rather have a loaded 760Li than a base S600 for the same amount of money. The 760Li is also a solid bargain compared to the Bentley Continental Flying Spurr, which goes for around $200 grand and has similar luxury features and performance. Audi’s A8 W12 is another possible contender, but it lags far behind on performance with a non turbocharged engine, and its base price is only a few thousand less than the Bimmer’s. So in the world of V12 car snobs, the 760Li may actually be the best overall choice on the market right now. For those buyers who want a performance limousine, but don’t “need a V12 because it’s just better”, the Alpina B7 is the way to go. As I said earlier, objectively, it offers the exact same package as the 760, but it costs 10 grand less. Even though that isn’t a huge amount of money in this range, a penny saved is still a penny earned. -------------------------- ------------------------------ -------------------------------- Road Test: 2013 BMW 760Li There is something inherently intriguing about stealth and subterfuge. Especially when that intrigue takes the form of a car. When eyes slowly examine your car at the lights, trying to catch a glimpse of what is hidden underneath that unassuming shell of aluminum and steel. I am, of course, talking about the much attempted, yet rarely perfected art form of the “sleeper”. A car that, to an an unassuming eye, wouldn’t look any more out of the ordinary than sand at the beach. But upon closer inspection, would reveal something very sinister indeed. German luxury manufacturers have quite a successful record of creating these types of cars over the past few decades, what with BMW’s M-division, Audi’s RS line and the bonkers AMG boys over at Mercedes (has anybody told them they’re basically building muscle cars?). Although, I would argue that most people have begun to expect performance from an M-badged BMW, but do they expect it from a 7-Series? A car that, from all outward appearances, looks as normal as any other luxury car. Well, I wouldn’t be so sure. BMW has owned Rolls-Royce, the British purveyor of all things luxury, for nigh on two decades now. And as such business deals go, crossover is only to be expected between the two marques. In all honesty, it would be a wasted investment otherwise. Before I get accused of digressing unbearably far from the main topic of this piece, there is a reason for the short history lesson. And it is a simple one: the BMW 760Li and Rolls-Royce Ghost, for all intents and purposes, share more similarities than your local Rolls Royce salesman would like to admit. But all this fluff about the two cars sharing the same chassis and engine essentially boils down to one thing: the crossover between Rolls and BMW has made the 2013 760Li one of the best luxury cars on the market today. And one of the most overlooked. As with all luxury cars in this day and age, you come to expect a certain level of gratuitous luxury, especially when you are sat square in the driver’s seat of the most expensive car BMW makes. At just a hair over $140,000, taxes and delivery charges withheld, the 760Li is appointed unlike any other car in BMW’s line up. The best analogy to describe the experience is a rather simple one — no matter what you wear while driving, you will feel underdressed. For all intents and purposes, you are driving a Manhattan penthouse that can, at your bidding, get you across town at 155 mph. As cliché as it sounds, the leather oozes a milky, smooth texture; a texture that is only truly surpassed by its sister car, the Rolls Royce Ghost (and let’s be honest, it should be). But, undoubtedly, an overwhelming majority of 760Li buyers will opt for a driver to handle the mundane task of getting from point A to point B. While I don’t have an inherent problem with that fact, it does become slightly saddening to realize how much of the driving experience they are going to miss. And let me assure you, it is a lot to miss. People often harp on about the end of the V12. The petrolhead’s bible, Top Gear, even dedicated a piece at the end of their 13th season; recounting, against a somber backing of classical music, that the V12 era was dead and dusted. An era which saw Formula 1 outlaw the use of any engine 12 cylinders or above and in which the top step at Le Mans was dominated by a 12 cylinder car more times than I dare remember. Obviously this news has yet to reach the offices of BMW, tucked away in the sprawling German metropolis of Munich. Under its hood, the 760 packs a walloping great V12, producing just as hair over 530hp with the help of two equally great turbos either side. The choice of a twin-turbo V12 over a much more sensible power plant is what sets this car apart from its rivals at Mercedes and Audi, who both have opted for more sterile V8 setups. Giving it the boot from stand still will get you to 60 mph in 4.3 seconds (we were able to time 4.1 seconds) and onward to your welcoming party at the local state penitentiary in a time you dare not think about. Electronics limit the car to 155 mph, but there is no doubt the engine could push it further. And all this from a car that weighs as much as a small moon. At a listed 5000 lbs, there is no denying it is a heavy car. Only it doesn’t feel quite that heavy. Not in the slightest. The moment BMW adopted the rather clever marketing slogan, “the ultimate driving machine”, they became marked men, even if they didn’t dare admit it. If any one of their cars befell that promise, well, the BMW faithful would cry bloody murder from the hilltops. And, as such things go, probably flee to one of their German rivals. In much of their range, obtaining a well thought out, exhilarating driving experience, on paper, shouldn’t be all that difficult. But it is when you begin to get to the more difficult cars – cars like the 760Li – that you can truly learn to appreciate the engineering work that goes into making a 5000lb luxury apartment on wheels feel no heavier than a fully-loaded 3-series. The car we tested came fitted with optional M paraphernalia scattered around the cabin on things like the doorsills and steering wheel – all very trick. At first, it was all a bit amusing – like a sumo wrestler threatening to beat Usain Bolt in the 40 yard dash – but once you drop the car in sport, you forget to laugh. You forget, mostly because you are pinned back into your seat as though that same sumo wrestler was now affixed directly to your lap. The car should not handle the way it does. And after driving the car on mountain roads for hours upon hours, I still cannot believe it can handle turns the way it does. The way the computers are working under the skin, you would half expect to see smoke pouring out from behind the dashboard. The heads up display, on the other hand, is one of the best executed examples of the technology I have experienced. Instead of the ghastly Windows 1.0 DOS green all too familiar to Corvette owners, the 760 uses a cool white which dims/brightens the display based on current lighting conditions. Admittedly, over the course of my review, I did inherit a penchant for driving into direct sunlight just to watch the display auto adjust. In addition the new for 2013 3D imaging was fantastic. with very vibrant multicolor. A habit that did make the fuel economy drop a little bit. We were getting – in sport mode – an average of around 16 mpg, which is not entirely unexpected given the shear amount of monstrosity living under the hood. Dragons need to eat, or something like that. The BMW 760Li is a car seldom spotted due to very low exclusive production numbers., thus leaving it sorely overlooked by much of the petrolhead collective. Both are fates that should never befall a car of such an impressive nature. It is a car that plays its specified role as an ultra high performance luxury sedan to a T. And for those who simply fail to see the need for a $139,000 BMW ($160K+ for the virtually non existent every option cars), take solace in the fact that BMW is continuing to produce a 545hp+ V12 in 2013. That is the single most staggering fact about one of the most staggering cars BMW has ever made. We should point out the $139,000 gets you the base 760, of which almost all are built. We were treated to an every option car that exceeded $162,000.And dammed well worth every extra penny to the common base 760. This is the cleanest one I have ever seen . It literally looks like it has 50 miles. And for some odd reason it's the fastest one i've driven, by far ------------- ------------------------------ ------------------------------------------2012 BMW <750L is the automotive incarnation of Billy Bob Thornton. Smooth, refined, and highly intelligent when necessary, but rowdy and rude when business is done. And that, for me, is a near-perfect mix. Or, to put it another way, the 750Li is a reverse mullet: party in the front, business in the back. In the driver's seat, once you engage the Sport+ mode and pull the gear selector over into Sport, things get very interesting--and they get even more so if you hold down the traction control button, putting the big limo into full DSC-OFF mode, its most focused and free setting. With DSC-OFF engaged, you can power brake and roast the tires, slide tail-out around any curve of suitable radius for its frigate-like length, or toss the car back and forth like a super-sized sports car with nary a complaint from the car's electronics. In this mode, the big 7er is surprisingly competent , handling like a car 75 percent of its size. This is the party in the front. Swing wide the huge rear door and step into the rear cabin, and it's a whole different universe in the L model over the model. Even without the full executive treatment in the rear seat (our test car had very few upgrades in the back) it's a cavernous space, complete with wedge-shaped rests to support your feet. And it'll fit NBA-sized legs and feet, though headroom may run a bit short at the longer end of the spectrum. The moonroof does an admirable job of staying out of the way thanks to a large scallop in the ceiling just above the rear passengers' heads, but lean too far forward and the tall-torsoed six-foot-plus crowd may encounter some unwelcome cranial resistance. But even so, there's ample shoulder and hip room, plenty of light (and shades to quell it) and enough panache to make negotiating a major share trade or setting the next tee time not just possible, but pleasurable. Materials, finish, and quality of the rear seat area is impeccable, even at the $98,900 price point our car stickered at. This is the business in the back. Needless to say, we like to party, so the car stayed in Sport, Sport+ or DSC-OFF mode most of its week with us. That may have contributed to the rather miserable 15.6 mpg average we saw, though a heavy right foot and the endless reward of really pushing the 750Li likely contributed as well. So what's the deal with all these Sport, Sport+ settings I'm on about? It's the way BMW handles mapping the adjustable damping system and the tuning of the six-speed automatic gearbox. Settings include: Comfort, Normal, Sport, Sport+, and the secret setting, DSC-OFF. You can access the four standard settings by pressing the corresponding toggle switch in the center console, beside the gear selector. To access DSC-OFF, simply hold the traction control button until the navigation system begins to alert you to the import of your decision. Similarly, the transmission can be bumped from standard Drive mode into Sport by a slide of the gear selector to the left. Once there, you can choose to let the computer do the job for you or bump forward to shift down and pull back to shift up. Those who've attempted to drive American and Japanese manu-matics hard will recognize that BMW has gotten it right; none of the bump forward to upshift/backward to downshift nonsense. In the end, though, the point may be moot--unless you're really pushing the car to its limits, automatic mode is just as quick as manual mode, and perhaps quicker as you obviate the tap on the rev limiter brought on by a late upshift. The 750Li's electronics match revs on downshifts in either drive or manual, though the lack of paddle shifters on the steering wheel remind you you're driving an executive limo, not a sports car. The fact that you may need reminding is real though--with the M Sport package in full sporting mode, the big 7er handles much more nimbly than its curb weight or wheelbase would suggest. The meaty steering wheel weights up nicely, the not-too-aggressively-bolstered seats hug you, and it rotates and transitions like a sporty 3-Series running at 90 percent pace. From the outside, the 2012 750Li cuts a clean figure, freed from the styling of previous models. It manages to pack its proportions into a package that looks leaner and lower than its true size should allow, escaping awkwardness from any angle. Despite the optical illusion, its size is undeniable when parking--it's wide, long and those extended rear doors don't want to see a steel canyon of Tahoes or Expeditions alongside. After a week behind the wheel of the big Bimmer, we understand why we see so many of these cars piloted by a nattily-attired professional as the rear seat sits empty. While Mercedes, Audi and Lexus may offer slightly better pricing, the 750Li is the driver's car of the bunch. ------------------------------- BMW’s new N63, 4.4-litre twin-turbo, direct injected mill, the same engine being released iin the 750i. With 298Kw/400hp and a hefty 450 pounf /feet of torque BMW's twin-turbo 3.0L inline-six has been a rousing success, with nothing less than a Wards 10 Best Engines award sitting in its trophy case. The praise is understandable and well-deserved, as the engine uses a combination of forced induction and direct injection to serve up a torque curve that's far beefier and flatter than what should be expected from a engine of its size. So what next for the propeller brand? Simple -- take similar technology, add it to the company's 4.4L V8 and toss in a dash of unconventional packaging to make everything fit. BMW put its latest jewel on display at the 20011 Detroit Auto Show, and we snapped some shots of it to give you an idea of why this engine is so special. We've included those photos in one of our galleries, and below the fold, we've thrown in a few observations. Undoubtedly, the most unique feature of the 4.4L TT is the packaging of the turbochargers in the valley between the cylinder banks. This is made possible by the swapping of the intake and exhaust ports in the cylinder heads, with the exhaust now exiting towards the middle. This allows the turbochargers to be mounted in the valley with minimal plumbing, which means less bulk, lower weight and better efficiency. Immediately after exiting the turbochargers, the exhaust gases enter the catalysts. It's important to keep the cats as close as possible, as the exhaust carries heat that is required for the converters' operation. Packaging the cats in this location underneath the hood must present some interesting insulation challenges! Instead of expensive variable-vane technology, each turbo makes use of fixed geometry and relatively simple wastegates. Each compressor is fed via a black oval-shaped duct, as shown above. Between the compressor outlet and the intake manifolds lie a pair of air-to-water intercoolers, one for each bank. Such an intercooler reduces packaging volume and tract length compared to a top- or front-mounted air-to-air heat exchanger. Immediately downstream of the intercoolers lie a pair of electronically-controlled throttle bodies. Below each centrally-located coil-on-plug (COP) assembly resides the direct injector, along with the feed lines and fuel rail. It's presumed that piezoelectric injectors are employed here, which are fast enough to allow several injection events per combustion cycle. Each fuel rail gets its own fuel-pressure regulator. The operating system of this system is yet unknown, but we're guessing that it's similar to the 200 bar (3000 PSI) that is used in the engine's direct-injection predecessors. Dished pistons are used to lower the compression ratio, with a compact ring package to reduce crevice volume and frictional losses. The net effect is a peak of 400 HP, with 450 lb-ft of torque delivered between 1750 and 4500 RPM. In a sport sedan such as the 7 Series, this engine will likely erase fond memories of the musclecar era, and even in portly SUVs such as BMW's X5 and X6, the result should still be rather impressive. ---------------------------------------------------- Behind the Wheel | 2009 BMW 750i and 750Li Casting Out Devils, BMW’s 7 Becomes More Heavenly Compared with sumptuous but conservative competitors — the Mercedes S-Class, the Jaguar XJ and the Lexus LS 460 — the BMW says of its owner, “My hair may be gray and I may wear funny hats in Boca Raton, but you won’t catch medoing 55 in the fast lane.” Unfortunately, the delights of the 7 Series, which include blowing away rosy-cheeked lads in Subarus, had become weighed down by baggage. The often-derided iDrive controls made it hard to tune in Neil Diamond without wanting to punch out the display screen. And while I usually have no beef with icy Germanic interiors, the outgoing model took the dominatrix-in-Berlin theme too far; no flagship luxury sedan should make people suffer for their driving pleasure. Cabin demerits included obtuse controls and rigidly minimalist appointments. That’s why the 2009 7 Series is such a double delight, whether in standard (750i) or stretched (750Li) guise. Yes, the new 7 is faster, nimbler and more fun than any plus-size sedan has a right to be. But with all due respect to the Bavarian engineering on display, that’s almost an easy birdie on the BMW course. More surprisingly, the big BMW has ditched its misanthropic ways to embrace anyone in its rich presence. And rich it is, with the 750i starting at $81,125 and the 750Li topping out around $112,000 with every conceivable, option. The 7 arrives just as Chris Bangle — that’s his picture with the dictionary citation for “controversial” — departs BMW after 16 years as design director. And it was the last-generation 7 Series of 2002 that spawned the term “Bangle butt,” a snarky characterization of that car’s jutting, coffin-lidded trunk. In Mr. Bangle’s defense, talk is cheap and BMWs are not. Actual buyers, as opposed to dittoheads on car blogs, made the departing model the best-selling 7 ever. In the same vein, be wary of revisionist nonsense suggesting that the new 7 succeeds because it erases Bangle’s memory faster than a Communist re-education camp. Those willing to remove their anti-Bangle blinders will see the latest car as a clear evolution of his work. Certainly the 7 looks better, yet it is no mea culpa. All the cues are there — even a slimmed-down Bangle booty — but they are better integrated. I began my testing in the short-wheelbase 750i, whose ski-sack pass-through made it ideal for a quick ski trip to Vermont. Later, I switched to a glossy black 750Li. The preschool ease with which I linked my Bluetooth phone, address book and iPod was the first omen of a great road trip. The new iDrive, defying expectations, has gone from worst to first in the wacky world of rotary-knob systems controllers. It essentially mimics the best features of Audi’s M.M.I. system and in some cases improves on them. Nearly all the infuriation is banished — buried submenus, illogical functions, stingy displays, even the gummy knob itself. Toggling between menus is now a simple left-or-right operation; call up a radio station, press the downsized iDrive button and file it as a preset. At 10.2 inches, the high-resolution display screen may be the largest I’ve seen in a production car, big enough to contain split-screen maps plus a submenu. Ease of use extends to Driving Dynamics Control, with simple up-down buttons to range through four settings (from comfort to sport plus) that urge the steering, suspension, throttle and transmission to ever-snappier levels of performance. The 7 is still a driver-first car, with basic-yet-gorgeous analog gauges and a serious mien. But this 7 is less stark inside, with warmer finishes like a flowing wedge of wood along the instrument panel. Seats are a long-haul fantasy, with built-in heating and ventilation, an optional massager and an additional adjustment for the upper seatback. As before, storage is meager up front, and at 14 cubic feet, the trunk is fairly nice in the big-car league. The rear seat is the Rorschach test for owners. Stretched 5.5 inches, the long-wheelbase 750Li has a lounge-worth y 44.3 inches of rear legroom, two to three inches more than key rivals. The 750i is nearly 82 pounds lighter, but loses nearly seven inches of rear kneeroom. In the past, I’ve favored the short-bus 7, but now I’m inclined to go long: the 750Li gives up almost nothing in performance, so at these prices you may as well treat passengers to the decadent back seat with its cute carpeted footrests. And this time, BMW created a length-disguising roof for the 750Li. The LWB is the way to go Yawn..That's why you have adaptive BiXenon headlights and active high beam with But on a darkened two-lane road in Vermont, the new high-beam-assist feature proved pretty slick. Once activated, the system automatically dimmed the brights when it sensed an approaching car, then flicked them back on the instant the car passed. Allow me also to praise the toasty heated steering wheel, a feature that I find more beneficial than seat warmers That sport package also adds 19-inch wheels, a sport steering wheel and active antisway bars to reduce body lean. The only AWOL option is the full Internet access available to Europeans. For now, liability concerns will keep Americans from posting chocolate-covered-baby photos on Facebook while at the wheel. But next year, BMW will roll out the first all-wheel -drive 7-Series in the model’s five generations. Like the compact 3 Series sedan and even tinier 1 Series coupe, the 7 has adopted dual turbochargers to bump up the power from a relatively small engine. Here, a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V-8 develops 400 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque — much more torque than any direct rival makes, and only 15 pound-feet less than Mercedes’s S63 AMG, a $135,000 hot rod with a monumental 6.2-liter V-8. Drop the hammer and the 750i blows from 0 to 60 in 4.7 seconds. Yes, this four-wheel McMansion is faster than the much smaller 335i, and quicker than the previous 12-cylinder 760Li, too. Alas, the mileage is estimated at 17 m.p.g. in town, 24 on the highway, for the 750Li. A slick double-wishbone front suspension, a first for a BMW passenger car, combines with computerized shock absorbers. The longer model adds a standard self-leveling rear suspension. During a four-hour jaunt through the Hudson River Valley, I thought of all those digital zeroes and ones whirring around to increase the 7’s uncanny capability. Yet the car still feels communicative and natural, not an automaton. Pricier sedans like the Bentley Flying Spur and Mercedes S-Class AMG, pushed near their limits, still betray some 2.5-ton insecurity, a sense that it’s time to back off and drive as if you’re in a normal car. The BMW is nothing like that. In normal or comfort mode, the car is cushy, yet seriously sporty. Move up to sport or sport-plus mode, and the BMW hustles with almost indescribable brio. The only big sedan that feels almost this athletic is the Maserati Quattroporte, which also costs significantly more. Of course, the 7 remains the most expensive BMW, one reason you rarely see a 20- or 30-something at the wheel. But whether you’re a snowbird or a spring chicken, the car will trim hours off your next Florida getaway. • INSIDE TRACK: Good things in a big package. ---------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------- !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! -------------------------------------------- MANHEIM SAN FRANCISCO BAY 29900 AUCTION WAY HAYWARD, CA 94544 (510)786-4500 VEHICLE DETAILS - 2012 BMW 750LI 750LI VIN: WBAKB8C56CDX20857 Body Style: 4DSN Top Type: Moon Roof Ext Color: CASHMERE Int Color: OYS Odometer: 32,190 Work Order: 1797463 Seller: BMW NORTH AMERICA/ BUY BACKS Received Date: 07/17/2014 Sale Number: 38 Lane Number: 42 Run Number: 242 Inspector: RREYES3 07/22/2014 InService Date: 08/28/2012 VEHICLE IMAGES GRADING Grade 4 .7 Very Clean More About Auto Grade MSRP-Not Available Engine Starts-Yes Drivable-Yes This grade was calculated under the assumption that some repairs may be covered under manufacturer warranty. *Process protected under U.S. Patent No. 8,320,362 VALUE ADDED OPTIONS Back-Up Camera Bluetooth Connection DVD?CD/MP3 Player Cooled Front Seat(s) FOUR Zone A/C HID Headlights Heated Seats-Front(s) Leather Seats Moonroof /Soft Close Doors/Comfort Access Navigation System Rear Parking Aid Hi Fi DSP Pro Stereo VEHICLE INFORMATION OPTIONS 50 State Emissions A/C ABS Brakes Automatic Headlights Auxiliary Pwr Outlet Child Safety Locks Comfort Seats Cruise Control Dual Air Bags Fog Lamps Front Floor Mats Heated Seats - Front Intermittent Wipers Leather Steering Wheel Luxury Seating Package Mirror Memory Owner's Manual Power Folding Mirrors Power Locks Power Mirrors Power Passenger Mirror Power Telescopic Steering Power Tilt Steering Power Tilt/Sliding Sunroof Power Trunk Release Power Windows Push Button Start Pwr Seats - Both Pwr Steering Rain Sensing Wipers Rain Sensor Rear Defrost Rear Floor Mats Rear Power Sunshade Run Flat Tires Satellite Radio Side Air Bags Steering Wheel Audio Control Sunshade - Side Tire Pressure Monitor Tire Pressure Monitor System Traction Control Trip Counter Turbocharged Two-Wheel Drive US EPA Label Universal Garage Door Opener Warranty Books Woodgrain Interior Package XL - Xenon Headlights MECHANICAL 8 Cylinder Gas Turbo Automatic Automatic Transmission Pwr Brakes 4X2 4.4 L INTERIOR Odometer - 6 Digits Digital -Operable Int Odor: OK Wood Trim Dash Leather TIRES AND WHEELS Wheels: Alloy Tire Tread Depth Brand Size Left Front: 10/32" BRIDGESTONE 245/45R19 Left Rear: 10/32" BRIDGESTONE 245/45R19 Right Front: 10/32" BRIDGESTONE 245/45R19 Right Rear: 10/32" BRIDGESTONE 245/45R19 Spare: N/A (Mini) N/A KEYS Master Key - 2 OTHER Title State: CA Title Received Date: 08/15/2014 Org Mfg Basic Warranty: 4 Years/50,000 Miles Org Mfg Powertrain Warranty: 4 Years/50,000 Miles --------------------------------------------- ======================== --------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------Congratulations!It's your eBay anniversary--year 20redlinefun, We want to say thanks and let you know how much we value having you as an eBay community member.
