Now, although it has high mileage, this vehicle has been very well maintained, and the vehicle was just looked over and serviced by a BMW certified technician. The car has new oil in the engine and automatic transmission, as well as the mech sleeve being replaced to avoid any leaking, or transmission issues. The vehicle has quality Cooper Tires, that have 3/4s life left. The brakes have great feel and stopping ability, and do not need to be replaced, as well as the suspension of the vehicle stills is in good shape. The entire vehicle still rides smooth, and just like it should. Interior is an 8/10, all leather seats, no real signs of wearing. The entire iDrive system works flawlessly, and so does all of the buttons throughout the interior. This is a 2001 540I sport package. The sport package basically means a better suspension, 18 inch lightweight alloy wheels, sport mode/steptronic manual shifting and the bigger 4.4L V8 motor ( 0-60 5.5 sec ). In my opinion this is one of the better BMW's ever built. It really achieves the perfect balance between a drivers car and a luxury car. The car has a clean title and is in excellent condition. I was hit by a motorcyclist a few years back who wasn't paying attention and ran into the back of me. There was minor damage to the rear bumper which we replaced and painted. There are a few minor scratches that are barley noticeable as well. My family and I purchased the car a few years back, as the second owners, at 85,000 miles. We have put over $8,000 in the car in necessary maintenance, for all the things that one would expect to happen on a 540i at 80,000 + miles. It has had its cooling system issues taken care of, ( a common problem on these cars ), its belts done, the timing chain, brakes, thermostat assembly & water pump replaced, spark plugs & cylinder head gaskets replaced, left engine mount replaced, a faulty ABS module replaced and it has a brand new set of Michelin Pilot Sport All Season tires. Oil changes have been done every 3,000 miles as well & it has been garage kept its whole life ( us and the previous owners ). We are selling the car because we are in the market for something new. We have owned BMW's for years and I can guarantee this is one of the best, if not the best, 540i's on the market currently in this mileage range. This is an example of a car owned by an enthusiast that threw a lot of money at it but never really reached the goal of exploiting the full potential of all the mods. I bought it knowing it needed some expert care after sitting for a few years. The previous owner had it it to more than a few west coast shops to clear up a running problem & was never able to correct the defect. It's fine now. The mods include a 3.0 engine (maybe 3.3 ), large front sway bar, steel braided brake lines, lowering springs, tucked in bumpers, new exhaust, front strut tower brace, rear differential brace, rear mounted battery, later alloy wheels, & probably a bunch of other stuff i haven't thought of. As for condition, there is no rust to speak of other than a patch of surface rust under the lower trim of the rear window as pictured. Pans, strut towers, fenders are rust free. This vehicle spent most of it's life in california. Body wise, there are a few dents, one on the top of the hood, one on the beak of the hood, a dent on the left rear flank, (looks like a serious door ding ), & some minor door dings. Overall, pretty remarkable for an original paint 35 year old car. It runs good. doesn't smoke, no wierd noises, doesn't overheat, runs strong. Shifts good, synchros are good up & down, brakes are fine, clutch is good. I put a new guibo (flex disc) in the driveshaft & the u joints were tight. The diff is NOT a limited slip. There is a slight hiss with the clutch pedal down indicating wear in the clutch release (throw out ) bearing. I believe the weak point of the car is the interior. Although it has recaro seats, at some point someone gave it a complete Tijuana tuck & roll job. And not a very good one. The carpets were also replaced with bad fitting aftermarket black. It has a sport steering wheel. No radio. The fan switch & sliding heater controls need replaced. Power windows work great. Good news. Included is a ton of spare parts. A complete console assembly with working heater controls, extra computer, larger injectors & fuel rail, air flow meter, original tan interior door panels, an oil cooler assembly, & just a ton of literature & magazines with E12 projects & a bunch more stuff. This is the kind of car you can drive to work during the week & restore it on your driveway on weekends. Oh, yeah. It needs a catalytic converter to pass IM 240 emissions inspection. The PO had a complete new fabricated exhaust installed that did not include the cat. I opened up the air flow meter & adjusted the fuel mixture with a CO meter so it will pass on specs but will need a cat. Legal stuff. Buyer arranges transport. US buyers only. No returns. I have a clear colorado title. Local pick up is fine. Payment to be made multiple US post office money orders or cash.
