After the enormous success of the Bentley Continental Coupe introduced in 1991, Bentley set out to make a convertible version. The Azure debuted at Geneva in 1995 on the same chassis as the current Continental R. Production of the Azure technically started in 1996 with 251 made and only 9 examples made for 1995 model year. Bentley turned to Pininfarina and worked for two years at cutting the roof off the Continental to make the Azure; the Italian firm made the shells of the car and the convertible tops in Italy and sent them to the factory in Crewe England. The Azure was propelled by the already familiar 6.75 litre eight cylinder single garret turbocharger and about 550 lbs-ft of torque. Though Bentley never officially released figures, the magazines were able to push the 5,750lbs juggernaut swiftly to 60 mph in 6.2 and a top speed of 150 miles per hour. When launched in 1995, the cost new of an Azure was $347,645, making it the most expensive Bentley/Rolls Royce ever made and $36,355 more expensive than its Coupe’ sister. For 1999 model year, Bentley introduced the Mulliner high performance package to the Azure. It increased horesepower to 440 and nearly 650 lbs feet of torque. It also included bigger wheels and different body skirts lower valances and bumper treatments. Production ended in 2003.
