Bentley's flagship Arnage sedan receives a mechanical makeover for 2007, with output now rated at 500 horsepower in the high-performance Arnage T. Other changes include a new six-speed automatic transmission as well as slight exterior and interior revisions. The Arnage last received a major update for 2005, when Bentley re-engineered each model from bumper to bumper. The Arnage comes in three trim levels: base Arnage R, extended-length Arnage RL and sporty Arnage T. The latter version has less chrome than the regular Bentley sedan, and the seats have diamond-pattern upholstery. For 2007, the Arnage T's grille receives a darker finish, while the Arnage R and RL receive chrome-finished grilles. An optional "Flying B" emblem - Bentley's iconic symbol - can sit above the grille, and it's retractable. Bentley sedans are largely hand-built. These four-door cars are similar to the now-departed Rolls-Royce Silver Seraph, but they look slightly different and feature several unique characteristics. Buyers can choose from 40 factory body colors or specify a two-tone combination. Arnage T sedans get a sport-tuned suspension and seven-spoke, 19-inch alloy wheels. The minimally chromed exterior includes front fog lights. The outside mirrors feature electrochromatic glass to reduce night glare and can fold in electronically when required. A 26.4-gallon fuel tank is installed for good reason, as fuel economy isn't a Bentley benefit. For 2005, the Arnage's interior was updated with a new dashboard top and instruments. Secondary controls are hidden behind veneered panels. Bentley buyers can choose walnut, oak, bird's-eye maple or black lacquer interior trim to complement the myriad interior leather options. Updates for 2007 include a slightly longer steering column, a chrome gearshift bezel and a revised driver information display. Tucked amid all this traditional luxury are several technological treats, including a DVD-based satellite navigation system. The driver's seat automatically moves rearward to ease entry and exit, and both sides of the rear seat also move. In regular R form, Bentley's twin-turbocharged 6.8-liter V-8 now develops 450 hp and 645 pounds-feet of torque, essentially matching the figures in last year's Arnage T. A "One Of 24" plaque is factory-fitted to the dash. It still looks, feels, drives and smells as new. So new, in fact, clear plastic still covers the interior carpet sills and the two Bentley factory umbrellas are still encased in their original plastic packing and leather-snapped in the trunk/boot. The trunk, or boot, is fully wool carpet-lined and trimmed in Autumn leather with Spruce stitching, same as the interior of the car. The T-24 has a 6.75-litre Twin Turbocharged V8 engine and a noticeably more sporting tuned suspension -- it is not some floating behemoth, this car really moves out like a freight train and it actually handles much more like a sporting car than a luxo-boat. A big plus, the reliable V8 is a much more preferred engine by Bentley mechanics than the hyper-complicated W-12 engine used in the Continental. In fact, current Bentley models have returned to offering the V8 alongside the W-12 as tests have shown the V8 makes for a better-balanced car, overall. There are many expensive and exclusive differences between a normal, stock Arnage and the limited run of twenty-four T-24's. T-24 improvements: more sporting-designed seats with diamond stitching; distinctive lower front quarter engine vents and red/white/blue Union Jack enamel badges with '24' insert; quad exhaust tips (@ $2400 each!!), cast aluminum brake & accelerator pedals; 'One Of 24' plaque on the dash, etc, etc, etc. This example was ordered with black ebony wood instead of burl walnut and it also sports extensive use of carbon-fibre inserts (doors, picnic tables, etc) making this an extremely masculine-looking car.Only 16,600 miles, always maintained by the same individual Bentley-trained tech throughout my ownership. For the spineless, there's a button that will turn the lower seatback as hard as oak. Both rear passengers get pretty wood trays that pop out of the front seatbacks. The wood veneer, as delicate as strips of puff pastry—oak from faraway California, the burled walnut and the blond bird's-eye maple presumably from secret forests known only to the Rockefellers—must be layered with five coats of clear lacquer and then cured no fewer than 72 hours. And here the assault of change encroaches: That task is now performed by one of only two robots in the greatly refurbished plant, and only because humans are imperfect and cannot apply the coating uniformly.
