Up for auction is an original 64 Studebaker Champ pickup. I have previously considered this truck "restored" but my friend and automotive owner and enthusiast who came out last week to examine it thoroughly has informed me it is actually an original truck that has been re-painted and its interior replaced or updated. Whichever you prefer, the truck starts and runs nicely. It drives down the road straight. Goes through all gears and has an overdrive "lever" that can be engaged. I have driven it in the overdrive position with no problems. Headlights work; Wipers function as they should. It doesn't overheat or smoke. The horn honks. I haven't found anything on it that doesn't work. There is vinyl over the top of what appears to be the radio location, but there is not a radio installed in the truck. However, it somes with two factory radios that are located in a seperate box of goodies which I will include in the sale. I haven't taken it on any major road trips but it has taken a good few 20 to 30 mile joy rides and it always gets me back home. Because I tend to want to baby a truck like this, I haven't hard-stomped the gas pedal or done any kind of hot-rodding with it. It seems to be right at home rolling down my farm road at about 50 to 55 miles per hour. It has all four factory hubcaps with the correct Studebaker logos but I can't say for certain they are correct to this truck. They look like exactly what it would have had on it rolling out of the dealership in 64. It also has a set of Uniroyal radials that by my estimation roll smoothely with no flat spots and feature probably 75-80% treadlife remaining. From what I've read, the Studebaker company went bankrupt in 1965 and ceased production but before they left the American Automobile landscape, they made a final and high quality entry into the pickup truck market. Internet research sites that I have visited due to my fascination with this little truck have lead me to believe that it was, in spite of its relatively high quality build, something of a scrabbled together effort on the part of the Studebaker company. I will assume Studebaker aficionados would agree with the following; the cab was the popular Studebaker car (the Lark) basically cut in half behind the front doors and fitted to a truck frame that was a throwback to the 1940's era models. The bed of the truck was a 1950's design that must have been updated to line up with the Lark front end as the body features some styling lines that are in fact alligned perfectly. Studebaker became a part of America's past history in 1965. The 1964 pickup was therefore the last one made. As can be seen in the pictures, the bed is wider than the cab, I would suppose due to the previously mentioned efforts to build this truck with what parts were available. It is a very different and desireable feature to this truck that sets it apart. But I have been asked by people who stop to admire it why the bed doesn't "match" the rest of the truck. It's always fun to tell them it was made that way. Some of my research into these trucks indicates that they held a pretty high standard for workmanship, being compared to the likes of Mercedes. Since the front of the truck was from the Lark design, the truck rides much like a car, which was one of its selling points back in the day. The doors on this little truck are solid. They don't rattle or fail to latch like so many I've seen of other pickups of the same era. This truck was re-painted likely 15 to 20 years ago. The paint has a few blemishes and the truck has some minor rust but nothing is rotted through. I would rate the paint as "good" on a scale, but wouldn't call it "excellent". It has a nice shine to it when cleaned propperly. Surface rust is apparent in a small spot just over the grill; another over the passenger headlight and several spots at the base exterior of the tailgate. Speaking of that, this truck's tailgate does not appear to have ever been used. Its pretty much perfectly straight. Not warped or lopsided. The hinges work smoothely and the old style chain and hook fasteners are present and function with the hasps (?) that are mounted with bolts to the rear surface of the truck bed. Along with that, the bed likewise has no major dents or scrapes in it. It also doesn't appear to have ever carried anything that would damge it severely at all. There are some scratch marks on the inner bed rail at the top where a previous owner had a home-made bed cover (plywood) on it. Near the rear of the bed surface there are some tiny light rust spots that I think came as a result of a door in the home-made cover. There is one spot about the diameter of a soda can where it has lost it's paint due to what I think was probably spilled brake fluid, just inside the bed near the tailgate. The fender wells have good paint on them and just a few small dents but again are very straight for five decades old. Overall I would rate the bed interior VERY good for it's age. It appears to have been a white truck all of its life. There is some faded white paint on the inner rings of the hubcaps that tells me they were a correct match to the rest of the truck. There is some overspray apparent under the truck in places out of typical view. Truck has what appears to be the original bias-ply spare tire in place suspended under the rear in the factory installed spare tire mount. The interior is clean and in overall good shape. The carpet has some fading and some tears behind the seat that are very small, but I have to wonder if a truck like this would have had carpet when it was new? Weather stripping is good; windows are not cracked. Factory rear sliding window works exactly like it was intended and makes a nice breaze as this truck does not have A/C and I am pretty sure never did. ( I have read articles indicating that the sliding rear window was introduced by this truck, becoming popular the world over as a result on other makes and models.) The chrome on the truck is in very good shape except for a small dent in the body line strip on one of the front fenders. It is not dull but quite shiny on the grill, door handles, mirror and body side moulding. The hood latches into place correctly. The drip rail has some very small areas of surface rust but is not corroded or damaged. Windshield rubber is not cracked or dried out and it has a chrome strip over it's entirety that is clean, straight and shines nicely. The engine compartment is fairly clean and the motor itself is painted yellow. Could not guarantee that the engine paint is original, but it looks the part and isnt bad at all. If your looking for a cool, clean, straight running and driving piece of American pickup truck history, and you don't want to have the same thing all the other guys at the car hop are driving, this is the perfect truck. I've read that it was the first truly "mid-sized" pickup available in America, even though Studebaker never laid claim to this. Its not like most others on the road and it's not really odd either. It is stylish and different and well made.

Restored 64 Studebaker Champ pickup. The restoration on this truck is probably 15+ years old, but its in great shape. There are a couple of spots of rust near the front of the hood and above the front window, but nothing too serious. Good radial tires; original hubcaps. Six cylinder engine runs fine. New battery installed last month. Truck is a 3-speed on the column, and has an overdrive lever for speeds over 45 mph on the highway. All works fine. Interior has been re-finished at some point; no tears in the seat or dash and the carpet is clean and in good shape. This little truck is a head turner; Not many of them around and this one drives down the road just fine. Has the original factory sliding rear window too. Doors are solid; hinges don't sag or squeak. Every thing is in working order. Added pic of box with spare parts: includes two factory radios and blank keys.

1962 Studebaker Champ Short Box Pick Up - 259ci V8 - Very Rare and Desirable!! Believed to be Original Service Truck For Lions Drag Strip!!! Here is a very unique and rare 1962 Studebaker Champ short box pickup. This truck is believed one of the original service trucks for the world famous Lions Drag Strip in Wilmington, CA. The track was very well known, open from 1955 to 1972. This is a rare truck as it was a limited production truck only built for 4 years and is one of only 7,000 built in '62. It is a nice blue plate California / Arizona truck with a super straight body. The truck is very nicely restored and was done a few years ago. It is very nicely equipped with the original 259ci V8, 4-speed manual trans and short box bed. This truck is very clean and all correct!! The truck is in what I would call it's original condition with just the right amount of patina. I do not have any documentation proving it was one of the actual service trucks for Lions drag strip. Everyone has different opinions. Some people from Southern California do remember seeing the truck at the track in the 60's and some people say it's a tribute truck. I just don't know or have proof. The truck its self points to being the real deal and the painted lettering is very old and has been on the truck for many decades. Also it has a very large 50 plus gallon fuel tank, which would make sense to have at a race track. Lastly the bed in the truck is not all beat up as it would for an all out work truck. It's loaded with the following equipment: 259ci V8Engine4-Speed Manual TransmissionShort Box BedVery Large Custom Fuel TankDual ExhaustThe List goes on and on............. This truck looks to have had one repaint decades ago and is showing its age but on the positive it has the patina look everyone is paying to have done. The chrome on the bumpers are original and have patina. The grille is original and in good shape. All the glass in excellent shape. The body is very straight. It is a very good looking truck. It has its original wheels and old vintage bias ply tires. The interior is in excellent condition with redone seats and door panels. The dash is very clean and has its correct steering wheel. The gauge cluster is original and all the gauges work. Mechanically, the engine runs very nicely and it is a pleasure to drive. The original 259ci engine runs great. All and all, this is a very unique and rare truck. That makes a great conversation piece. It is perfect to use, put in your collection or racing museum. I bought it a few years ago. Did some work on it and cleaned it up. Replaced the brake master cylinder, new spark plugs... I welded in some sheet metal where the floor was rusted out, and ripped out the interior. Reupholstered the seat, and did some general cleaning. It starts right up every time, even in the cold weather after not being run for weeks. Has the original inline 6 cylinder engine with oil bath air filter and 3 speed transmission. The other running gear is also stock, accept for the brake master cylinder. It runs and drives real nice, save for a knock in the engine which we have narrowed down to the main bearings on one of the cylinders. Even the electrical works. I cut out some 3-ply plywood that I was going to cover and use for the interior but I got busy with school and didn't get that far. I managed to massage out a nice wrinkle in the front passenger fender but there are still a couple more. The reason I'm selling it is because I need the money and I don't have the time to work on it anymore. My plan was to drop in a 350 and turn it into a street rod. Message me with questions. Here is a video of the truck on youtube

Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE THE DOWNFALL AND EVENTUAL DEMISE OF THE STUDEBAKER COMPANY IS WELL KNOWN IN CAR ENTHUSIAST CIRCLES. IT IS ONE OF THE SADDEST STORIES IN AUTOMOTIVE HISTORY. ONE OF THE PIONEERING AMERICAN AUTOMOBILE COMPANIES IN THE COUNTRY, STUDEBAKER ESTABLISHED AN ENVIABLE REPUTATION FOR QUALITY AND RELIABILITY. HOWEVER, VICIOUS COMPETITION FROM THE LARGER FORD AND CHEVROLET, CORPORATE MISMANAGEMENT AND POOR DECISIONS, BAD MERGERS, AND LACK OF FUNDS DETERMINED THE FINAL FATE OF THE COMPANY. THE LAST STUDEBAKER ROLLED OFF THE CANADIAN ASSEMBLY LINE ON MARCH 16,1966. THE BAD NEWS FOR STUDEBAKER WAS GOOD NEWS FOR AUTO ENTHUSIASTS AND COLLECTORS WORLDWIDE. DUE TO QUALITY OF BUILD, LOW PRODUCTION NUMBERS, AND POPULAR STYLING, CLASSIC STUDEBAKERS HAVE BECOME SOME OF THE MOST SOUGHT AFTER COLLECTOR VEHICLES IN THE MARKET. ONE OF THE OFTEN OVERLOOKED MODEL LINES WERE THE STUDEBAKER TRUCKS. Studebaker entered the automotive business in 1902 with electric vehicles and in 1904 with gasoline vehicles, all sold under the name "Studebaker Automobile Company". Over the next 50 years, the company established an enviable reputation for quality and reliability. However, years of trouble followed. Studebaker's strong post-war management team including president Paul Hoffman and Roy Cole (vice-president, engineering) had gone by 1949 and was replaced by more cautious executives who failed to meet the competitive challenge brought on by Ford and Chevrolet. The conservative executives became obsessed with short term goals instead of long term prosperity. Massive discounting in a price war between Ford and General Motors could not be equalled by the independent carmaker, for whom the only hope was a disastrous merger of Studebaker, Packard, Hudson, and Nash into a third giant combine. By 1954, Studebaker was already in the red ink. They struggled for over a decade before the end came. One of the success stories, and also victims, in this drama was the Studebaker truck line. Noted Studebaker historian Fred Fox stated that the company lost one of its' greatest opportunity when it didn't aggressively enter the commercial truck market after the World Wars. Studebaker had a long standing relationship with businesses and farmers, dating back to the horse wagon days. This was the exact demographic that was demanding the pickup truck. Ignoring this proved fatal. The Studebaker Champ was the light duty truck that was manufactured from 1960-1964. The truck line hadn't undergone a significant redesign in over 10 years. Although they had to use many existing components due to cost constraints, the end result was impressive. The chassis and cargo box were very similar to the existing design. However, designers devised a creative plan to utilize the Lark sedan body as the cab section. The engineering staff took a four-door sedan, cut it in half behind the front doors and modified the front half slightly to fit the truck chassis. The only new sheet metal stamping that was required was the back wall of the new cab. With a cab based on a sedan body, the Champ was among the first pickups to offer true "car-like" comfort, with a wide, comfortable bench seat and a handsomely-styled interior. Other manufacturers took until the late 1960s and early 1970s to follow the Champ's lead. The Champ also was the first to offer state of the art options such as sliding rear window and fiberglass body and bed components. The Champ also pointed the way to a smaller yet still rugged pickup, something Dodge later claimed as a "first" with their mid-sized Dakota, which was introduced as a 1987 model, nearly 27 years after the Champ. By December 1963, Studebaker's board of directors announced the closure of its' South Bend factory, and the trucks were among the casualties of the company's consolidation around an abbreviated family-car lineup in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada assembly plant. When they purchased the rights and tooling to the Studebaker Avanti in 1964, Nate Altman and Leo Newman also acquired the rights and tooling to Studebaker's trucks. However, Altman and Newman, for reasons which are lost to history, never built as much as a single truck. The opportunity to continue to manufacture a vehicle that was ahead of its' time was lost. The result is the existence of a very limited number of quality built, highly demanded Studebaker pickup trucks. Today, the Champs that still exist are highly prized for their interesting combination of passenger-car comfort and style and their rugged mechanical durability The example in this ad is one of them. don't miss this opportunity. White body accent stripes. White Studebaker logo on tail gate. Paint is good driver quality. There are some driving blemishes and some areas of minor bubbling, and a few minor repairs, however the paint has a glossy shine and shows well. View the Photo Bucket file to verify paint condition.
