It was also one of the most expensive cars you could buy in 1983, with a sticker price nearly three times that of a comparable Riviera coupe. Today, they're insanely affordable and this beautifully refinished Riviera convertible represents one of the biggest bangs for the buck we've ever offered. Repainted just a short time ago, this Riv is probably nicer than it was when it was new. They used the same bright white finish but with modern urethane paints, it's shiny and deep, and thanks to a bare-metal respray, you know the job was done right. All the Riviera convertibles were built as coupes and shipped to ASC for the conversion, but you'd never know it by looking, because the transition was seamless. The flowing body lines are uninterrupted and there's an argument to be made that the Riv looks even better as a convertible than as a coupe. A neat red pinstripe matches the interior and showcases the flowing fender lines, and as a car that's always been treated as something special, it fits together beautifully and shows zero signs of neglect. The chrome is bright and shiny, the rubber bumper fillers are in excellent condition, and all the emblems and lenses remain in almost new condition. Burgundy leather was the only choice on the Riviera convertibles, regardless of what color bodywork you selected. The handsome bucket seats are supportive and comfortable the way your easy chair at home is, and the leather shows only light comfort marks that seem to enhance the look. There's a bunch of faux wood that looks pretty good and everything was standard equipment on the drop-top Riv, including automatic climate control, power windows (with four new motors), locks, mirrors, and seats (with new transmissions), cruise control, and a tilt steering column. In back, the seat was artfully modified to handle the top mechanism, so it looks neatly finished without appearing to be an afterthought like so many other convertibles of the time. It shows just 69,150 original miles, and given the durability of the components in these cars, it's only just now getting broken in. The white convertible top is brand new and folds easily with the touch of a button, and it so neatly mimics the roofline of the hardtop that you need to look at the rear window to spot the convertible (the convertible's window is smaller). There's also a spacious trunk with all its original panels and a space-saver spare. The 307 cubic inch V8 under the hood of this Riviera was optional, but a vast majority of convertible buyers selected it. It's smooth and competent, the way your luxury car's engine should be, and it looks to have been properly maintained all its life. New components include the A/C compressor, radiator, hoses, and belts, so it runs beautifully. It's clean under the hood, suggesting an easy life and an owner who cared about taking care of even the things you couldn't see. Underneath, there's a 4-speed automatic transmission that makes this Riv a superb highway car and the shocks are new, so it has that pillowy ride that made American luxury cars famous. It purrs through a correct single exhaust system that was just replaced and fitted with dual outlets under the bumper for a cool look. New 225/75/15 whitewall radials were just fitted and there's a fresh alignment to ensure they last a good, long time. Documented with its original window sticker, build sheet, and manuals, this is a very high-quality car with broad collector appeal for the price of a VW Beetle. Add in the 401 inch torque factory under the hood and you have a car that drives as awesome as it looks. Don't let the oversized rolling stock fool you, this is a mostly stock 1964 Riv. No major element of that ground-breaking Bill Mitchell design has been altered and the 2-year-old black paint and straight bodywork mean that this is a car that you'll show proudly. Each of the three years, 1963, 64, and 65, have their notable features and everyone has a favorite, mostly coming down to whether you like the exposed headlights or the clamshells of the '65s. Regardless, nobody will ever argue that this isn't a great-looking car from any angle. The crisp sheetmetal looks formal and well-tailored, cleverly masking what is otherwise a very large car. The detailing is exquisite, from the forward-canted fenders to the subtly sunken hood to the faux vents on the quarter panels, there's eye candy everywhere you look. The trim is in good order, and it really stands out against the black paint, further accentuating the clean design that was arguably the best of the '60s. The luxurious interior has a few custom touches, but the factory really nailed it on their first try. Individual buckets flanking a full-length console give the Riv a sporty feel, but the upholstery patterns and matching pillow-tufted door panels suggest quiet luxury. A small-diameter steering wheel is easy to grab and the leather wrapper matches the upholstery quite well, so it looks right. Factory instrumentation covers only the basics, but the big dials have a clean, elegant look that's like a precision mantle clock, and there are auxiliary gauges underneath to monitor the engine. A factory Sonomatic AM radio remains in the dash and it does have factory A/C and power windows, both of which were optional on the Riviera, surprisingly enough. The rear seats are also buckets, making this a true 4-seater, and it's the kind of car where you'll marvel at the detailing as you drive simply because everything is so beautifully sculpted. In back, the trunk is neatly upholstered in black with gray side cards as well as a full-sized spare tire with cover. Buick's 401 cubic inch "Nailhead" V8 was all about torque, so much so that they advertised it on the air cleaner (included in the trunk). That's 445 pounds of torque, and it makes this Riv surprisingly fast around town. The engine was rebuilt not too long ago and it retains a very stock look under the hood. It isn't detailed but it runs and drives superbly with a great V8 growl that's unique to the Nailhead and with power steering and power brakes, it seems to shrink as you drive it because it's so easy to handle. The DynaFlow slushbox was gone, replaced by a TH400 3-speed automatic in 1964, and it makes the big engine even more effective out on the streets. The undercarriage is in excellent condition and clearly hasn't spent much time in the elements, and like I said, the stance comes exclusively from the rolling stock, which consists of 20-inch chrome wheels and low-profile performance radials. These cars will not be getting more affordable than they are today, so if you've been admiring them from afar, this might be your opportunity to get a good one before everyone else figures out how awesome they are. It has always been a Nice Car. The Floor Pans, Trunk Pans, Quarters, and the rest of the car have Never had any rust. The trunk pan has original undercoat. We pulled the mat to clean and this is what it looked like. It's All Solid. The paint is mostly original but touched up on the front end but you can tell it's never been crunched. The Dash Pad is a perfect as your going to get without going back in time. The chrome and trim is all in great shape along with the glass. I zip the front windows up in down daily. The passenger was slow so we took the door panel off and lubed everything. The Clock is the only thing not working. You can touch and it will work so needs to be sent out for repair. I've been looking at 71,72, & 73 Riviera's for quite some time and this is the nicest original I've come across with so many desirable options. I know a GS is more rare but I chose bucket seats and a console over GS emblems with a bench seat. I will be happy to answer any questions about this car as far as you being interested in buying it. It drives around the block but I wouldnt go across town. 350 Buick engine is in great shape ( obviously replaced original block)as well as the transmission. Needs brake work and probably suspension. Power windows operate , the seats move but barely. Everthing else seems to operate o.k . but needs several items to be attended to such as the passenger side door handle, glove box and light ,etc. The body is good shape with just some minor or superficial rust spots which I pictured as much as I could but no corrosion . The front tires are new 17 inch Vogues and the rears are probably 50% and of course the wheels are true wire wheels- expensive. I have 4 buick wheels with tires that would be the correct wheels if you prefer. was told it has been sitting in a garage for several years and was meant to be restored and it looks like they started but like a lot people, never had the time to finish! . With some TLC it could make a great weekend driver or a restoation project or even convert to really cool hotrod. I loved these Rivieras and its not my first. I had a 63 in high school that was inherited from my grandfather who bought it new..I wished I still had it! It rides and drives O.K and was used as a driver before it was stored last but it would need some work to make it a driver again. It drives around the block but I wouldnt go across town. 350 Buick engine is in great shape ( obviously replaced original block)as well as the transmission. Needs brake work and probably suspension. Power windows operate , the seats move but barely. Everthing else seems to operate o.k . but needs several items to be attended to such as the passenger side door handle, glove box and light ,etc. The body is good shape with just some minor or superficial rust spots which I pictured as much as I could but no corrosion . The front tires are new 17 inch Vogues and the rears are probably 50% and of course the wheels are true wire wheels- expensive. I have 4 buick wheels with tires that would be the correct wheels if you prefer.
